I tried HDMI2 on the TV, second HDMI output on the 7030, different HDMI cables, turning ARC off on the TV and nothing works. Is there a way to do a hard reset of the 7030? Maybe try turning off the power switch on the back for a couple of minutes...? Chad

thepar,
Congratulations on your new toy.
I have a petty expensive Ohno cast balanced XLR stereo pair going from my PT-7030 to my XPA-2. The other channels I use Monoprice XLRs. The difference in sound is just a bit of polish.
I used to use unbalanced RCAs. Going to balanced XLRs did bring out my upper-bass and added control to all of my bass frequencies.
We're looking forward to your impressions of your new set up.

I turned off the power in the back and quickly pushed Input 1 on the front panel and it locked in to that input so I could access the menu. If I changed inputs it would always go to that input like this I1-TVARC was displayed and then nothing I pushed would get me back to the real input 1 until I cycled the power switch again. I'm not sure if something is wrong with my 7030. I just got it setup on Thursday. For now I will keep CEC turned off until I can figure his out. Also the ARC was working as I was able to hear the TV apps sounds through the HDMI connection but not being able to switch to the true Input wasn't going to work. I'm sure I must be doing something wrong.

Ok I'll give that a try. I was just trying to avoid using another cable. One more question, when setting speaker levels what should I set the volume at? The other processors I've had always set the volume of the test tones close to the correct level and then I used the SPL meter just to fine tune them to 75. On the 7030 when I go into the level cal item tones are so low initially they don't register on the meter. Thanks.

I found I had to have the volume around 70 to get 75 db, you can turn on the test tone then press the volume up button till you get to a good level then exit the menu and have a look at the volume display.

Really excited about setting up. Cables come next week. Only think I am concerned about it power. My sub is 450 W, mains are 220 W each (JBL 4328 and 4312). I will also be running an XPA-5 for rest of speakers (bose cubes). Computer is using about 200 w on load. Are you guys using power conditioners?

Keith, what about outputs - are they balanced outputs too? The PA 7-350 has true real balanced inputs; with all of the benefits you get from that (common mode noise rejection). The inputs on the 7-350 (and the balanced inputs on our other equipment) use differential amplifiers (and not transformers). (Transformers have few benefits, and a very long list of drawbacks, and haven't been used by most people in years.)

I don't know how you came to this determination, but you are dead wrong. The balanced inputs and outputs of all Sherbourn/Emotiva products are indeed 'true' balanced and as such have all the noise cancellation abilities as any balanced input or output circuit. Why would you make such a defamatory statement? Oh, of course, I know why - you are confusing balanced input / output interconnect circuity with fully balanced differential amplifier design, whereby the positive and negative differential signal is kept separate throughout the entire component from input to output. Very few designs, even high end ones, are fully differential because it requires many more components, essentialy two complete amplifiers per channel - four in a stereo amplifier, thus the designation quad differential. This has been discussed ad nauseum in many other posts and indeed throughout the interne This guy has been bashing the 7030 in a few other forums, trying to talk everyone out of using the XLR outputs. I tried to explain to him what you just said, saying we are aware it is not fully balanced from balanced analog in to balanced analog out. I use all HDMI inputs anyway and still used the balanced outputs because it sounds better to me with less noise. I'm not sure why he hates the XLR connections so much. Bosshog - this is NOT true. I've no idea what you are talking about. I'm still considering buying a PT-7030. The only place besides here I've posted about the 7030 is on avsforum, and I challenge you to produce ONE such post where I bashed the 7030. I'll be waiting. You'll not find it because I haven't been badmouthing this unit in public or private. As I've mentioned - I'm still considering buying one! My question is concerning the true blanced outputs - or if they are basically just adapters. I'm still assuming they aren't true balanced outputs. They are effectively XLR adapters - using an unbalanced output signal. That is based on Andrew's coment, Keith's comment, and the fact that the new Emotiva processor is supposed to be the first Emotiva processor that is truly balanced. The whole thing is really not that big of a deal and won't prevent me from buying the processor. I just like being an informed consumer and learning all I can about my purchases. The beef you have with me, as best I can figure, is that you didn't like me telling you that XLR cable won't benefit you in typical home theater use if the ends of the cable are actually going to unbalanced sources - which I think is the case with the output of this PT-7030 unit. Until an Emotiva employee clarifies or corrects me. The way this works can be seen in this analogy: RCA out is unbalanced. if I have an RCA out on my source and and RCA in on my amp and use a XLR cable in between with adapters on each end to make it into RCA - I'll receive no audible benefit over just a decent quality RCA unbalanced cable for any typical home theater length run. That's all I'm trying to say. Thus - - since I plan to run pro amps, like my Crown XLS amps (XLS-5000 for subs, XLS-202 for towers, and/or the Sherborun 7-350 amp from this processor if I purchase it - I want to know if it's of benefit for me to use XLR cables, or if my decent quality Emotiva or HOSA RCA cables --- will be just as good. My current AVR - is not balanced - so it's not like I'm downgrading. I'm just curious.

It depends on the adapter. If you buy transformer adapters such as these (http://www.fullcompass.com/product/401050.html), you will have the benefit of common noise rejection.
The balanced outputs of the PT-7030 are differential pos and neg signals which are proper for balanced common noise rejection XLR type unmodified cables.
" I want to know if it's of benefit for me to use XLR cables, or if my decent quality Emotiva or HOSA RCA cables --- will be just as good. My current AVR - is not balanced"
If the length is long, say 20 feet or greater, and if you are in a noisy environment, then you may benefit from XLR cables and the proper transformer adapters. But if neither of these conditions exist, you are probably better to stick with unbalanced. Only you can make that decision.

Well I finally put my 7030 replacing my rotel 1068. After some of the negative comments I've been a bit nervous about setting up but actually im very happy with it. Only early days but it certainally sounds great (connected to rotel 1075} not sure I would say a big improvement in SQ over the rotel 1068 {which I was using the analogue out into my oppo so I was getting the new codecs} but there is some improvement.
The audio delay is a little annoying when skipping thru songs on blu ray concerts but I can live with that. With CD's running thru my cd player using optical there is no delay skipping tracks. As for the hdmi switching it is a little slow but still quicker than the hdmi switcher I had to use previously and its one less thing in the rack now as well as being easier going from tv to pj.
As for the user interface that a few people seem hell bent on wanting a change guys please cry me a river, yeah it looks like old school txt up in the corner but at least its up in the corner out of the way and is only on for a second, why would you want it change.
The set up screens/process was simple enough and pretty much identical to the rotel interface. Programming everything into my Logitech harmony was a breeze. Shipping to Australia was quick and no duty had to be paid. All in all pretty happy camper down under.

Congrats rolling01 ; yes the setup screen is good enough for a one time process I reckon too . One thing I appreciate with my downloaded material [ahem ] is the group delay adjustment for lipsynch just a few button hits .. Its much nicer to be able to use the full bass management of the pt7030 rather than rely on the oppo ; and level matching is one less menu you you have to adjust to settup the oppo's -15db lfe output The sherbourn does have a very quiet analog stage though so one day Ile experiment as Chad has done ; thinking about a analog modded 103d from customanalogue down here to replace my 83 Enjoy .

I'm having an issue with using the XLR outputs to my Sunfire Cinema Grand amp. It will not power on the amp when set to auto on with signal. If I use the RCA outputs it works fine. I really don't want to leave the amp on all of the time. The amp doesn't have any dedicated trigger input.
Thanks.

Seems like that might be an issue with the amp maybe ?, is it able to auto on from the XPR inputs, if the 7030 is working fine on the RCA and XLR outs then maybe it's something with the Sunfire amp

Would it be ok to connect both the RCA and XLR left front outputs at the same time? I would think this might not be good so I don't want to just try it. BTW everything works great using either the XLR or RCA outputs separately it's just the auto in not working from the XLRs. Should I just not worry about using the XLR outputs and stick to using the RCAs?

I'm sure you'll be fine using the RCA connections, if you notice any audible noise or anything I'd say stick with XLR but RCA is fine, I use XLR more for the actual connection and the coolness lol Chad

Hello All, I recently purchased and did a quick, simple set up of the Sherbourne PT-7030. When watching satellite channels, and I pause my DVR then play again, the video instantly resumes, but there is a 2-3 second delay in the audio. Almost always, I miss onscreen dialog because of this. It is EXTREMELY annoying. In my previous set up, I did NOT have this problem. I'm a newby to the Preamp world, so any help is appreciated!
Here's my current 7030 setup for which the problem exits:
1. DirecTV satellite HR34-700 DVR connected to 7030 HDMI input 1 I1 is set to HDMI audio. I tried setting it to analog and connecting the DVR analog to it, but apparently, if HDMI is connected to DVR, it only outputs HDMI audio. 2. 7030 HDMI Output 1 to Samsung Series 8000 Plasma, input 1 3. 7030 unbalanced LF, RF, Center outputs to Emo XPA-5 Amp respective inputs. 4. Amp connected to respective B&W speakers. 6. Logitech Harmony 900 remote communicates to Logitech IR extender
Here's my previous setup, with which I did NOT have the problem:
1. Same DVR connected to the TV HDMI 1 input 2. TV analog audio out connected to Emo USP-1 Aux-1 input 3. USP-1 connected to unbalanced inputs of emo XPA-2 4. Same Logitech set up.

The 2 to 3 second delay of the PT-7030 is much shorter than the delay of the UMC-1. Yes it is aggravating. Welcome to the world of high end processors. (Other brands do it too).
