Geez - It doesn't matter if the output of the DAC is single ended. The signal is converted to balanced before going out on the XLR. If this is not so, Emotiva is guilty of miss represented specs and equipment (the label over the PT-7030 XLR outputs says "BALANCED"). Who replyed? - there's too much mincing of words going on here!

As far as I know, you can have balanced inputs/outputs without being fully differential. Perhaps this is what they meant?
For example, the XPA-2 has balanced inputs as does the XPA-1 but the XPA-1 is fully differential. (and has the pretty cursive writing across the front)

They are balanced in the way they are grounded and will pick up less noise of no noise but the processor is is not fully differentially balanced from input to output, too many worry about this, they are still advantageous for noisy environments or long cable runs.

I set up my inputs tonight. Mother of god, it was confusing for the analog inputs. I finally found the place in the manual that explains that analog 1-6 map to Inputs 3-8. Here's a thought: why not silkscreen the backpanel to match the numbers on the front panel?? With that out of the way, it wasn't too bad. I labelled inputs 1 and 2 "STEREO IN" and "TUNER IN", respectively, to reserve them.
Oh, and I programmed my Sony RMVLZ620 Universal Remote!! No brainer for $22. The IR range is MUCH better on the Sony remote. I did run into some issues that I'll mention in my next mini-review.

The question to me has been as much about audible differences...as about the theoretical and psychological differences... (some audiophiles are the same way... but they just can't/won't admit it)
If its just about audible differences very few of us may be able to tell apart - in a blind test... many of the subtle differences and better performance claimed in ultra-high-end products vs high-end or high-end vs midrange products...
anyways... based on the article below: mikeriversaudio.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/balanced-unbalanced_revised.pdf
can someone confirm which topology of "pseudo/partial balanced outputs" is found on the PT-7030... and the Onkyo PR-SC5508/PR-SC5509 or Marantz AV7005/AV7701 ?

Well all, I've found my new processor and am listening to music as I type this. I have not heard reproduction this good since my Proceed AVP or HTS 7.1. I see why this Krell piece was this so touted, its incredible, the bass, and involving sound.. Anyway good luck!

I'm really enjoying the 7030 for watching movies. Being able to adjust the subwoofer level and dynamic range from the remote is really nice.
I'm waiting for my family to go out for a while so I can listen to music at reference levels. I need to figure out what I need to run REW too...

I made some changes to the front panel. Larger digits makes the 7030 more user-friendly (and wife-friendly). I already know they're inputs, and I want to see big fat digits! The "Emotiva" logo keeps people from saying "Sherbourn - never heard of 'em!" I may try this with a decent printer that does blacker blacks. I kinda like the new look.

swampfire... Thanks for the nice pics of your "mods"... but did you get the chance to "pop the lid" like you said you might... do let me know what you see in the DAC section and how its outputs are wired to the opamp/linestage and if they go through another pre-amp before the output and check on how the XLR outputs are wired... can't believe there isn't a good 8 channel DAC with balanced outputs that doesn't break the bank... something like the www.exasound.com/e28DAC/e28DAC.aspx but cheaper.. may be I'd have to make my own using the twistedpear - Buffalo III DAC

Have you ever thought of a universal remote? The Harmony remotes are great and are very "wife friendly". One push of a button (color coded) will power up all the correct components and inputs per activity. Best $50 I ever spent in this hobby as all my other remotes (six in all) are stored away. Bill

I had one, but I sold it. I just bought the Sony RMVLZ620 learning remote, and I'm REALLY happy with it. It's a great replacement for the 7030 remote, and it also controls my projector, AppleTV, XBox (WMC) and lighting. The volume keys fall right under my thumb when I hold it. The only real fault I can find with it is that it's not backlit.

There are 33 pounds of analog goodness in the PT-7030, and that's all I need to know. Have you tried searching for a "Surround Processor" instead of a DAC? You might be able to find an older one on eBay that meets your needs.

I may try this with a decent printer that does blacker blacks. I kinda like the new look. Nothing says class like a bit of cardboard swampfire . Sorry I had to say that ;but seriously anything that takes the eye of decoding logos is a good thing ; nice The good thing about my $50 harmony's is being able to change button positions at will and putting less used ones out of the way in the lcd display . I tend to like remotes with a lot of hard buttons though ; had a philips pronto that had far too many scrolling touch screen pages and was beyond me to program media.officeworks.com.au/ims_docs/52/52A06817F5495140E10080000AF11387.JPG

I bought a nice vintage FM tuner to feed my 7030 today, a 1981 Yamaha T-7. It's all coming together...

I got a reply from Keith @ Emotiva... clarifying that the DACs are Burr Brown DSD1791, the output is fully balanced and is comparable to any other competitor...
I've asked for clarification on whether there are 4 DAC chips because the DSD1791 is a stereo DAC... its not clear which topology of balancing is used.
This being the case - its quite perplexing that these are all not proudly touted on the website... May be the tech team and the web-content writing team didn't completely synch-up.

No surprise that .Theres a lot of configurations dacs can implement as you know intgenx and even though we have a dsd capable dac ; it cant take a dsd stream ; no problem with 88.2 converted lpcm from my oppo 103d though . If the pt7030 had a direct mode like some denon's with the same chipset it would be a different story . Doesnt concern me though as all dsd gets converted to lpcm in a stage or come from pcm masters anyway before it hits the disc You may have come across this thread ; interesting read on the subject.. www.avsforum.com/t/1230824/list-of-av-receivers-pre-pros-with-pure-dsd-to-analog-processingMultiple stereo dacs makes sense when you see this on the spec page

Sweet, I use a 1970's Akai AT-2600 That's a beautiful tuner. I'd eventually like to get one with a backlit dial and gauges, just for the nostalgia. The Sansui TU-717 is my current candidate - I may go through a few of these tuners before settling into one.

Why dont they have switchable if selectivity anymore or hi blend to eradicate the hiss on a weak stereo signal ? Wonderful s/n ratio and superior 50db quieting sensitivity to the cheapo one yamaha sell today . usa.yamaha.com/products/audio-visual/hifi-components/tuners/tx-950/

I love the older gear. A friend gave me his Nakamachi System 7: CR-7a cassette deck, CA-7a preamp, ST-7 tuner. I haven't done a thing with them except verify that everything works. I run a tape once a month or so just to keep things moving. Someday I'll have time to play with analog.
