WOW!! I am amazed after reading a lot here,I have been hoodwinked by HD tracks, saying there stuff is hirez,I just started into this land of Audiophile music thinking this is the best sound I can get,Even got JRiver and a DC-1 so that I knew it was going to sound great,Only to see this thread and wonder,Did I just spend all this money and really not getting better sounding music then if I bought it on CD? Hmmm makes me wonder, was even going to try some of those Blu-ray audio discs,,seems like the $30 for them is a waste of time and money. I have purchased 4 blu ray audio discs and all of them have been excellent! yea I was just looking at them, they are expensive.but there a lot of titles not ava right now, guess backordered. Thanks will def try getting one and see and hear they diffences. Thanks again

Like Keith has pointed out before, you have to distinguish on the recordings as to what "improvement" is due to it being remastered and thus a different mix than the original, versus what is due to the higher resolution. It seems to me that everyone and their grandma is jumping on the hi-res bandwagon because that's become a buzz word just like hopping to the next "in" restaurant. I wonder just how much improvement can be made from old recordings that were mastered on tape - is there really any benefit to higher resolution that is audible? Certainly remastering the tracks can be beneficial but to just throw stuff out there and promote it as hi-res seems to be what is happening, without regard to whether that higher res makes a difference on its own. I expect to see 78 RPM records and recordings made on wax cylinders to be released in hi-res pretty soon, at astronomical prices.

Aw man! If it's in HD I bet that you can even identify the species of the bees that did that wax just by listening to it!

If there's one thing, however, in my view that's positive about all this discussion is that the download stores like HDTracks and Qobuz, amongst others, seem to be much more attentive to the files that the labels send out for sale now. The fact that there have been a few blunders in which the labels clearly just upsampled an existing record, and the visibility that had around the internet, has put the HD music dealers on top of the labels, and that's good.
A perfect example is the fact that HDTracks, being the biggest and thus most influent store (kind of the Amazon of music downloads) actually got to visit the studio when Sony Music was remastering the new HD version of Miles Davis' A Kind of Blue a few months ago and check on the strategy and technology being used. That's good news.
On the other hand, just like monkumonku was saying, a lot of labels just want to jump on the bandwagon and take advantage of the hype (stores are probably not invited to those studio sessions) so it is still Buyer Beware (and probably always will be, just look at all the 180gr vinyl pressings of terrible mixes that have always been around).
Cheers,

Found a used George Harrison live in Tokyo Sacd yesterday. The reviews are mixed on this. I thought that the vocals were a little weak, but then again Harrison was never a vocal virtuoso. Clapton and the band were very good with nice width and depth. This was a good step up from the red book that I heard. Not a bad pick up for $8. You know this is one of my favorite sacd's. Sonically, it is one of the weakest but I constantly go to it. I have lots of hirez that sounds way better but not as compelling to listen to. Concert for George on Bluray sounds great but no George. Content still trumps sound quality IMHO. Getting both is gravy.

Always check different fora about Hi-res audio before purchasing an album if it is worth to buy the more expensive HD version / SACD / Blu-Ray.

These DVD-A format disks are my go-to titles:
The acoustic tracks from Seal's "Greatest Hits/Acoustic Album" Donald Fagen "The Nightfly" Talking Heads "True Stories"
All make great use of the format.

Finally got around to listening to Getz/Gilberto pure audio blu ray tonight and it is very nice. I have listened to all three formats tonight and cannot tell much of any difference between them. I just love this album because it makes you fell your in grotto somewhere in New York or Chicago. I can only compare it to the MOG 320kbs stream since I don't have a red book copy or the Sacd. Needless to say there is no comparison. The MOG version was a little louder but was very two dimensional. With the blu ray it is very deep and well defined, with the bass really big and full. This is a very easy $30 recommendation for the jazz fans out there! View AttachmentMilsap195, I just got this DVD (my first digital high fidelity album in any format), and the bass is shockingly heavy playing it through my system as set up by by Sherbourn room equalization. It sounds better listening in direct mode. I'm just curious if you or anyone else thinks the bass is too heavy, or if my settings might be off. I have it running through a cheap Sony blu ray player. Not sure if that is an issue. Thanks, siggie

I subscribe to an excellent British magazine HiFi News. Each issue reviews six to eight "hi res" downloads. The reviews include a frequency spectrum analysis of the download. You would be amazed by the number of downloads that are sourced from 16/44.1 masters. By then the horses are all out of the barn. Be careful what you pay for.

Found a New York Dolls Seven Day Weekend DVD-A at a pawn shop tonight. I knew who they were but had never listened to them. It is quite interesting to listen to 70's glam / punk in 96/24. I like it a lot!

FYI, Audiogon and HDTracks have a new sampler available. "Audiogon Presents The Wake Up Your Ears Sampler." 15 good sounding tracks in 24/192 for $4.98. Downloading it right now.

I give my full approval for HFPA. I am going to order more. Beck was INCREDIBLE, Ella and Louis were clear as day. One really cool thing I noticed about Louis is that you can hear him chuffing at the end of his breath.

Received "Dark Side of The Moon" yesterday (SACD). It was the best recording I have heard to date, but I wasn't really floored with the 5.1 mix. Bass was coming in a little hot and vocals seemed sort of shrill. Stereo mix was very pleasant.
I also received Norah Jones "Come Away With Me". I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet. Excited about this one.

Excited about this one. DSOTM is really good but I prefer two channel, also, Nora will find the weak spot of your system if it has one. also, she will rip anyone's analog apart if it comes up short as she did on a couple of my lessor TT and cartridge set-ups. I didn't find the SACD shrill as you say, it was very pleasing to my ears in my room,,,,,you know the bit,,,,,he,,,,,he,,,,,

I wonder how DSOTM 5.1 mix (Guthrie) is compared to the 4.0 (Parsons) mix. I know disc 3 of the Blu-ray set has a 4.0 on it, but it's a lossy mix, albeit a less "noisy" mix than the DVD-A that has been floating around.
