I reccomend XPA-1. 60 watts of class A power vs 20 watts of class A power in the XPR-1. I've heard the XPA-2 and it has tremendous power and for me it was a very fast amp. The XPA-1 will give you just that but also fully balanced plus more capacitance and power vs an XPA-2. Or if you want to go cheaper the XPA-1 L would be a fantastic choice.

ok folks I need guidance. So I got a big B day coming. I know I dont look a day over 30. I was gonna throw a bash and my buddy mentioned buying something that will last instead. Why invest 2k maybe more on getting a bunch of friends drunk and fed. So I have always wanted mono blocks and now my dilemma is which ones. Does the XPR line really have that much more SQ or just wattage? The dedicated 20a circuits is no problem. I think even with the XPA1 i would run dedicated 20a to each. I even though of finding some Wilson puppies or Sophia's used to put the icing on the cake. Im a huge 2 channel listener and its something I have been itching for for years. What would you do? Thanks BTW I have about three months to decide and stash some funds. I would snatch up two of the XPA-1's from the secret warehouse sale ASAP. $700 shipped is a great deal.

My amps were physically threatened and I was verbally accosted. She reminded me that she spends a lot of time alone with my gear and would hate for some freak accident to happen if my effort on vday was not sufficient.

Curiously, one of the things I care for LEAST about my XPR-2 is its physical appearance. I'd have MUCH rather had a plain silver faceplate, but what the hey - I prefer blondes!

For music, the XPA-1L's should be all you really need. That was my choice.
They also won't break your back while lifting and take up less rack space than the larger monoblocks. Save the difference to upgrade your speakers or preamp such as the new XSP-1 GEN2 preamp giving you a rather nice true differential design setup.

Depends on what issues are more important. One way to up the quality side: How about an extra XPA-2 amp and then vertically bi-amp them both? =$900 plus: Order the new XMC-1 ($1,999) and sell the UMC-100 for whatever...total $2,900, less the sale of the UMC-100 or A pair of XPA-1 Gen 2 amps =$2,200 Keep the UMC-100 Does the extra heat plus whatever they draw concern you on the XPA_1 Gen 2s? Would you, in your system and listening room notice the difference in that 60W class A? or Go the XPR-1 path x 2 = $3,400 (a lot of beer and pretzels) Re the Wilson additions - DUF (damned ugly factor)

Thanks for all the input. Im going to try to contact them again today.
Boom one of your post mentioned shorter wire runs. I swapped out my nordost at 10 feet with some homemade ones at 3 feet and its made a difference. More , slightly, but more bottom end. I always thought the nordost sounded bright. Even when I put them in the system I heard the difference. Not horrible but brighter. Thanks for the heads up. After I read your post I dug through my wire stash and made the switch

Hi ncred02 - I'm glad you're pleased with the switch. As I said, I find the difference small if and when I can hear it at all, but whenever I can hear a diff, the preference has consistently for the shorter speaker wires. Like you, I've found the most difference in bass control. I've also owned Nordost speaker wires. I didn't like mine with ANY mix of amps & speakers I tried them with. I eventually sold them & was happy to have my money back.
Cheers - Boom

I'm so bummed ...... the sale is for XPA1s first gen not gen 2. ........$700 shipped. Still not bad but, I was hoping for the 2s. looks like new is the only option. Im still torn on the Xpr or Xpa
Boom, yeah the Nordost is a nice wire but I swear the day I put them in my system I heard the difference. I built some nice speaker wires out of 8 strands of signal wire. I braided them( took forever) and used a nice cable jacket and color coded shrink wrap. Call me crazy but they sound better than wires I paid $300 for.

GO FOR THE XPA-1s!!! My Generation-One XPA-2 was one of the finest amps I'd ever heard. It could even run with my current XPR-2 in some areas (dynamics, for one). You won't regret the XPA-1s IMHO. The price makes them the clear winners. Nevertheless, IF you're the type to obsess over what might have been, then buy the XPRs and be done with it.
I love my XPR-2, don't get me wrong, and I had specific reasons for choosing it. BUT if I didn't mind having more equipment in the living room, then the Gen-1 XPA-1s would have been my second choice. They will drive ANY speaker on the market, and for $700 shipped (WITH a five-year warranty) you just can't lose.
As to speaker wires - yeah - my home-mades sound just as good as anything I've owned too. I'm not a fan of braided wires (all that I've tried seemed softer in the treble), but many adore them.
Happy shopping!

I was choosing between XPA-1 gen1 and XPR-1 and decided on the XPR because I think they look better. Flunk, I didn't want to admit that but thats one of the things I like about the XPRs. I know its not an "audiophile " way of thinking but, dang, those amps look tough. Anybody who says looks don't count is lying. There are lots of great sounding audio components out there. Why pick any that are inferior aesthetically? My 2 channel is in my main living room. Hell yes I want it to look good. Sometimes it's the appearance of my system that makes a new person take an interest in it. Then when they hear it... Well, I might have just created another audio enthusiast.
