I've thought of getting some pre-formed 12" pipe insulation, stuffing it with cellulose, and wrapping it in fabric... And having gone around the world several times with loudspeaker contenders, I find myself coming back again and again to... The Tekton Double Impact speakers. For $3K, I just don't find much that seems to do all that the DIs do for anywhere near the price. But to put the piggy bank over the threshold, I still need to sell one more speaker pair or the remaining Airmotiv S15 sub. It'll happen eventually... And I hate to even say it - but... Should I consider the Tekton Design 1812s? There's rumor that an 21-12 is in the works....... w/ active amplification and DSP. Eric also hinted [in an open letter] of a new lineup that'll begin at around 35 grand and exceed 6 figures........

This boat has left the dock. It's Double Impacts for better or worse, richer or poorer, till death do we part. Are my fingers crossed behind my back for that oath? You figure it out...

Paul is a wealth of misinformation... Any specific examples? I don't need links, only a brief description. Well without links...type Mcgowan in to ASR's search function. You can then judge for yourself. A good one would be the PS Audio noise harvester review on there.

Hi Tim - I considered them all & based not only on my budget but also on my previous experience with the Pendragons, the Double Impacts were the selection that I made. My sole objection to my Pendragons was the audible transition from the 10" woofers to the tweeters. Since the DIs have two midrange drivers to smooth that transition, I believe that they will fill my needs now and in the future.

Yeah the future of those speakers in your system is probably 1-2 months tops. Mark

.................................................................... My sole objection to my Pendragons was the audible transition from the 10" woofers to the tweeters. ........................................................................... That was obvious from just looking at the design. People don't seem to hold on to those for very long. You were probably suffering from hearing cone edge breakup on the woofers as they attempted the higher frequencies. Then the tweeters probably had dB losses/roll-off as they tried to reach down into the lower mids. All the expense of midrange performance/output.

So your friend drives a 103dB 2.83V@1m sensitivity speaker (according to manufacturer) with bridge XPA-2 amps? Feed those speakers some tubes he will be very glad if he does.

Hi DavidR - I think you're exactly right. If the customer likes top-decibel rock from their AVR, then the Pendragons are still a bargain. For Mozart, not so much... But if you sit directly on axis with the Pendragons, and use a tone control to slightly abate the treble, then (and only then) will the Pendragons provide a fully-balanced frequency response. But the tone control alone, may be insufficient since it is a progressive solution that attenuates more and more of the treble as it rises in frequency. To fully correct the Pendragons' on-axis frequency response, it might be necessary to use parametric equalizers to slightly boost the midrange and broadly reduce the treble range, but without shutting down the high treble. It can be done, but not by an amateur. Boom

Two cures for the Pendragons (1) add a mid in between two tweeters -OR- (2) add mids top and bottom with one tweeter in the middle.

Personally I'd go for some Legacy Speakers. Probably some of the best USA made speakers that don't cost as much as a house like Wilsons.

Eric recommended the cap upgrade when I bought mine, may want to ask? Last time I asked (on my Pendragons) - Eric said "honestly, no difference" - I got the upgrade anyway to avoid being penny-wise and pound-foolish. This time, I took his original advice. No upgrade.

Blind cable test:
And before you even go there:
Not statistically valid (insufficient test population) Other testing issues
But still interesting.

I figured I would mention the Polycell since they sort of fly under the radar on the list of popular Tekton speakers. Glad you ended up with the ones you wanted. Once you get them, I look forward to hearing your thoughts! Tim

I have 102db sensitive Klipsch KLF-30 and I use a pair of XPA-1's on them as well. Not that I am using all of it, but the power availability gives excellent driver control and really provides stellar bass reproduction. Plus, I'm not a fan of tubes...and neither is he. Tim
