Oops - The darned Marantz is totally analog - no built-in DAC. So I need an external DAC, and it has to be Roon-compatible (not all DACs are). So recommendations please (and cheaply!)...
For the moment, I'm looking at the Audioquest Dragonfly Cobalt at $300.

Build yourself a Raspberry Pi with Ropieee as the OS. Should be at or less than $100. Then any USB Dac like the Cobalt could be Roon Ready.
There is a way to use a cobalt connected to your smartphone as a Roon endpoint.
Don't have any Dacs? What happened to the Black Ice? Was it a loaner?

I haven't heard it but Schiit's one time hater Amir at ASR loved the heck out of it. www.schiit.com/products/modiusThat's pretty darn good imo. Roon compatible

Come on, just test the SACD 30n along with this receiver. They were meant to go together!

You won't have problems there. Except Roon just changed their policy on connecting uncertified devices. I am not sure if this means the network node (in my case Sonore MicroRendu and RoPiee Raspberry Pi4) or if it means the actual Dacs. There was a cutoff date where Roon would not connect. This is a software change that has either just gone into effect or is about to. I can't remember. Don't get me wrong I love my Schiit. I have Gungnir Multibit, Asgard 2, Eiter, Wyred and just ordered a Magni Heresy. Roon- community.roonlabs.com/t/uncertified-roon-ready-devices-announcement/120298

Roon- community.roonlabs.com/t/uncertified-roon-ready-devices-announcement/120298 I have 2 Pi's and both have DAC HAT boards (1 HiFiBerry, 1 Allo). I checked both following the link you sent, and mine are both fine. Boomzilla - I do reco you try a Pi-based streamer at some point if you have not yet. They make any DAC or other receiving device Roon ready for cheap. The software most now use it totally invisible in use. I just choose the appropriate Pi as my zone, select music as I would for any other Roon endpoint, and the Pi sends the tunes onward. Mark

So basically Roon refuses to work with any perfectly functioning dac unless they talk to Roon? Didn't realize they had enough market penetration to isolate themselves into their own ecosystem... Eitherway...Schiit is a Roon Partner and Schitt says it will work. roonlabs.com/partner-schiitIf you do consider them, you may want to double check though because of the new advice.

I'm a bit confused about the implementation that is why I posted the link. My Schiit Products are fine amd not listed with the pink banner. I just didn't want boom to be blind sided.

Regardless of what Schiit says, I don't find them on this list:\\https://kb.roonlabs.com/Partner_Devices_Matrix
Also, as of today, I understand that legacy support for non-approved Roon gear is going away?

On the page, (first line) says "Roon supports more devices than appear on this page". In the list, you'll see Schiit Modi and appears on it, just not the Modius. That's why I suggest contacting Schiit. Only they will know if their Modius works with Roon.

Even if they worked in the past, today is the cutoff date for unapproved devices. Will they still work?
In any case, it's academic - I made a choice off the approved list that is portable (AQ Dragonfly), and that pushed the choice.

Even if they worked in the past, today is the cutoff date for unapproved devices. Will they still work? In any case, it's academic - I made a choice off the approved list that is portable (AQ Dragonfly), and that pushed the choice. Only devices that had the pink banner when you looked at them in Roon stopped working, but that is only for new installations. If you had a device like this and it was already working then it will keep working. There is a difference in devices that are advertised as roon compatible (like a selling feature) or a bridge device. I am still trying to understand , but schiit dacs work under bridge mode so this compatibility issue doesn't apply. Its really confusing but the devil is in the details. Companies like Chord who started the certification process, but didn't follow through are affected. They promote the devices as Roon Certified and are not. Schiit doesn't claim to be certified so they work or they don't. I have their new Unison USB and it works fine although not certified. I also have an old Meridian Explorer that works attached to my Roon Core and an old Musical Fidelity USB to Spdif converter that is fine as well. None claim to be certified, but work fine and would work fine in a new install, best I can tell. Like I said a couple times. Confusing. Good luck with the Dragonfly. Did you get the Cobalt?
