Well surprise, surprise! I've been waiting for some speakers to be delivered by FedEx Freight. The delivery is weeks overdue. I finally called FedEx and they said that they don't deliver freight to UPS stores because the stores refuse to accept it. This is most surprising to me because I've received FedEx freight for years at my corner UPS store, and the countermen there have signing authority for all my incoming shipments. Instead, FedEx plans to deliver to my home instead. Is what it is...

you'll know you've got problems with you hear the 'backup' noise of a huge semi.....which was towing a 5 ton forklift....... www.forklift-manufacturers.com/diesel-forklifts/5-ton-diesel.htmlEverybody is frightened of INSURANCE CLAIMS, Liability and fraud....... What do they do IF they leave 500lb of speaker on your doorstep and you come back and claim it was STOLEN? A nightmare at noon....

I have to be home to sign the manifest or they won’t deliver — a big PITA compared to having the UPS Store sign for me. And it’s supposed to rain.

Having digested brubacca’s excellent advice and having visited Roon’s ROCK page to see what’s supported, I think I’m ready. I’d like a NUC10i7fnh with a power supply. I DON’T need: RAM (have a bunch laying around & amigos who can get me anything I lack for free) SSD (I have several on hand in sizes from 500G to 2TB). I’d be ok with a used one, but will buy new if I must. Recommendations? Thanks - Boom Looking good... You'll want a small M2.2280 SSD for the operating system. 500GB or under. I think it needs much less than 500GB, but that seems to be what's available. When I installed ROCK I put in the M2 Drive only then installed the ROCK OS. Then I reopened the case and put in my data drive. Remember ROCK is going to reformat the Data drive. In my case I used a 2TB 2.5" Mechanical drive, but get the size drive or 2.5' ssd you need (as long as it fits in the NUC). Double check this because mechanical drives and possibly large SSDs can get to tall to fit inside the case. I don't see that exact NUC at my usual place for discounted NUCs. I do see a Tall Nuc 10 i5 (M2 and 2.5" SSD, $280) , or the Short Nuc10i7 (m2 drive only, $400). The seller on Amazon is called OEM XS. Like I said before I have bought both a NUC8i5 Tall and Nuc8i3 Tall from them refurbished and they have been fantastic.

Do I want a case without the fan? Thanks - Glenn

Might total 5mm. Like I said! 'Man The Boats!' At least it stopped dust from blowing and DOES make the air smelll good......

We NEED the rain! No significant rain here for more than a month.
Postscriptum - Today's front is passed - still no significant rain.
I'm going to get out & ride my bicycle this afternoon since it's dry.
But we still need rain!

I've never heard the fan, but I keep the Roon Server down by my TV and my listening area is in my office. Also, with wanting to use USB storage you can use a Short NUC , which only has a a M2 ssd slot.

I **DO** have Ethernet... I could leave the NUC in my computer room & put a small streamer in the music room (I think there are some inexpensive ones that work well?).
To date, I've avoided streamers as an unnecessary complication. But if I want to move my source (NUC or Mac mini) away from my audio rack, I'll need (or at least I think I'll need) a streamer. As I understand it, the purpose of the streamer is to accept audio via Ethernet or WiFi and send it out in a flavor that a DAC can digest. Most (semi-expensive) streamers seem to offer your choice of USB or Ethernet. The (really-expensive) ones include other digital outputs. And a lot of streamers integrate the streamer and DAC giving you analog outputs.
I think I want a cheap streamer with no DAC (I've already GOT DACs). Any more, I've read that TOSLINK & USB are roughly equivalent in sound quality. Is this so? Since I don't want to mess with WiFi, I think I want an Ethernet input on my streamer.
But the easiest option may still be to omit the streamer completely and just leave a NUC on the audio rack...

I have a friend who uses his NUC directly into his Chord Qutest Dac into his decware system. Sounds great. Personally if I had Wired connection at my office I would go direct as well. I tried this and Roon was unhappy with how slow my wireless bridge worked. Now I have my Roon NUC Core connected directly to my wireless router in the Living Room. Wireless Bridge in my office connected to my MicroRendu. It works this way as well. I have also tried using Raspberry Pi as a roon node using RoPiee, but the Mircorendu sounds better.

Boomzilla,
I like the NUC so much that I use a second one in my office running windows 11. I had never heard the fan until tonight. Regular computing does not trigger the fan.
Tonight I am running a handbrake process encoding a Make MKV file a MP4 file for use with JellyFin on my network. Handbrake is humming along using 4 cores (or maybe 4 threads). It is really taxing the PC and the fan is running.

I just emailed the New Orleans Museum of Modern Art to ask if they're interested in buying a Caroline Durieux painting that we have. Since Caroline was a New Orleans native, I thought they might be interested. Whether interested or not, I also asked them for a suggestion on where I might have the painting appraised.

I bought a NUC with the intention of installing Roon ROCK. The NUC I purchased came with Windows 10 installed. When I install ROCK, it will reformat the HDD. But I don’t want to destroy the (legal) copy of Windows 10 that I’ve already paid for. I may later want to install that copy of Windows 10 on another computer.
How do I remove that Windows 10 copy from the NUC prior to installing ROCK?
Thanks - Boom

The "license" for Windows 10 (and Windows 11) is tied to the hardware itself. So that COMPUTER is licensed for Windows 10. There is no separate license file or anything like that.. and nothing you can destroy. So, assuming that machine came with Windows 10, "a Windows 10 license exists for that machine"... If you delete Windows 10, and then reinstall it later, or simply do a "clean install", the "license system" should simply recognize the machine and activate Windows 10. You shouldn't need to do anything else. The license should survive if you change the HD or add RAM... but may not if you change the motherboard or the CPU... (Exactly how Microsoft "recognizes" the machine is a bit of a secret... ) There is no "license file" and no need to "unlicense" the machine before installing something else... And you WILL be able to reinstall the same version of Windows that it came with later... NOTE that this applies to: - computers that were purchased with Windows 10 on them - computers that were upgraded from Windows 7 (but were then UPGRADED to Windows 10) - (Windows 11 works the same way) Also note that the license is "version specific".... A computer is licensed for either Windows 10 Home or Windows 10 Pro.... (And a machine that is licensed for Home will NOT be licensed for Pro if you install it... unless you buy an upgrade.) This is NOT how it works if you actually BUY a SEPARATE COPY of Windows 10 with its own license key. That CAN be "moved from one machine to another". And, if you upgrade a machine from Windows 10 to Windows 11, then Windows 11 will work the same way. - you will then be able to do a clean install or a reinstall of Windows 11 on that machine - I THINK you will still be able to reinstall Windows 10 if you want to (unless Microsoft changes that) I bought a NUC with the intention of installing Roon ROCK. I should have added that, if you buy a computer with Windows 10 pre-installed on it, you will NOT be able to move that license to a different computer. That copy of Windows 10 is licensed specifically to that computer. (It comes with a "single-computer OEM license" for that computer only.) A "separate full-price copy of Windows" that you get by purchasing a disc or a separate license is not the same. (It costs significantly more - and CAN be installed on the machine of your choice.) I bought a NUC with the intention of installing Roon ROCK. The NUC I purchased came with Windows 10 installed. When I install ROCK, it will reformat the HDD. But I don’t want to destroy the (legal) copy of Windows 10 that I’ve already paid for. I may later want to install that copy of Windows 10 on another computer. So the pre-installed Win-10 is a throw-away unless, at some future date, I want to discard the ROCK install, reinstall the original version of Win-10, and resell the NUC. I can live with that - the odds of my wanting to install Windows on anything are slim.
I’d contemplated the idea of being able to sell the Windows-10 copy to offset the cost of the NUC, but since the operating system is valid for that computer only, that won’t be an option.
Such is life…

Can you SAVE MONEY by skipping Windows altogether and going with LINUX?
Or does Microshaft get a piece of every computer sold......regardless?
