So, yesterday a friend of mine called and offered me a handful of vinyls a family friend gave him years ago. $10. They all appear to be in great condition. There is some dust and a bit of the dirties, but they appear to be free of scratches. I am jaw dropped. Titles include
Pete Townshend - Empty Glass The Isley Brothers - 3+3 Bad Company - Self Titled E.L.O - Face The Music Rick Springfield - Success Hasn't Spoiled Me Yet Original Soundtrack From TCB (Diana Ross, The Supremes, The Temptations) Chicago - V Hall Oates - Big Bam Boom Santana - Self Titled The Cars - Heartbeat City Jeff Beck Group - Rough and Ready Little Feat - Dixie Chicken Kinks - Greatest hits Pais Tropical/Sergio Mendes & Brasil '77 Donna Summer - Bad Girls Toto - Self Titled Heartbreaker - Free Roger Daltry - Ride a Rock Horse An Evening with Diana Ross - Ahmanson Theater Champagne Jam - Atlanta Rhythm Section George Benson - Breezin' Dan Fogelberg - Home Free Ace - Five a Side The Moody Blues - A Question of Balance Edgar Winter's White Trash Recycled Chicago - Greatest Hits The Moody Blues - On The Threshold of A Dream
I have been wanting to get a TT for quite a bit of time but needed a reason to pull the trigger. Now I have that reason. I don't have lots to spend, but I am looking between the...
Rega RP1 PRO-JECT Debut Carbon
Anyone have any recommendations on these two units or others in their price range? Anyone have any experience with either one of them? This will be my first TT purchase. I noticed neither one of them has a cover. This may propose an issue with the curious little lion that lives in my house. Anyways thanks for the advice in advance.

There is an Pro-Ject Expression III TT on audiogon right now with an Ortofon MC Turbo 3 that would be a real nice TT. I would guess you could get the package for around $550 shipped. I have no affiliation with the seller, just happenned to see it today.

I have a Pro-Ject Debut Carbon and I like it and it did come with a cover. I have no experience with the Rega, so can't help with the comparison. I do have a Dual 606, but haven't done a side by side compare. I Think the Carbon is better, but may be because it's newer and blue, matching my Emo gear. What I CAN do is take the albums off your hands, just send them to me and you won't have to choose!

I have and like the Debut Carbon. Felt that it was superior to my XDA-1 in music reproduction. The Rega has a good reputation too.
My advice is to buy one of the two from a local dealer. Have them set it up for you (a service that my Pro-Ject dealer does for free when you buy a table).
Good luck. If you go Rega rp1 consider spending a bit more for the performance pack, it supposedly is a nice upgrade for not much.

Will either of those two options require something like the XPS-1 to connect to my UMC-1?
It has crossed my mind to sell the Vinyls, it would appear I could easily get $250 for the lot.

If your going to go the route of buying a XPS-1, then do yourself a favor and find a used USP-1 in the $225 instead, WELL worth the 75 dollar increase. Don't sell the vinyl, just take your time and gather a few components here and there when you have the funds. No need to rush into a TT purchase either, the vinyl will be waiting for you when the time is right

Thanks Stads. So I would be able to hook up the TT directly to the UMC-1 via RCA though correct?

Thanks Stads. So I would be able to hook up the TT directly to the UMC-1 via RCA though correct? via the USP-1's phono section and HT bypass, then yes. Not, via the rca (phono) outs of the turntable itself though. The phono signal is too weak for the UMC-1 to properly use without a phono stage amplifying it into the umc-1.

Perfect, thanks. I am super stoked to get to listen to these. My mom has over 1,000 vinyls she is going to bring me from Kentucky when she comes home to Texas next. Her taste in music is stellar, so I am excited to see what is in the lot. She put them away when she had my brother and I so we wouldn't ruin them. I didn't even know she had them, but she has offered them up.

Before you spend $400 or more on a TT give your local craigs list a try - see what is available near you. Usually you can find decent TT's for a great price if you live near a large city. I got my TT from a guy selling 180 LP's - he threw in the TT with the LP's. I got the TT virtually free and the LP's for a buck each! Turns out the Phillips GA-312 is one of the better vintage TT models.

Great golly for you!! So happy for ya!. Both TT come with covers and I am partial to the Rega line. Set up I as so easy hemster,,,,,,,I mean even a monkey could do it,,,,,,he,,,,he,,,,,, Plent of you tube Verison to watch. With the Rega there is a reasonable upgrade path and I do like there sound and ease of use. No bells and whistles,,,all your money goes into better parts. As far as a pre amp with phono, I've hear my 5 TT through both the XSP-1 and the Pre-1 and both sound steller. Then one of the most inportant things you can do while saving for your TT is to purchase a Spin Clean disc washer for your newly acquired vinyl, also a carbon fiber brush to clean dust off of the vinyl just before you drop the needle on it.

Girls from bike week? Bring 'em on. Most of us are capable of tolerating at least a little sidetracking of a thread Cheers! Chuck
