I have just purchased a used Basis 2001 (black, not clear) to replace my Pro_Ject RM5-SE and have a Ortofon 2M Black on order. Look around, I got the new/used Basis for $2300 with a Graham 2.2 arm. New MSRP about 6-8K depending. Be careful, a used TT can be a big box-o-crapola. While I realize the amount I stated is beyond your budget it was stated as an idea of what you might find.

I just picked up a REGA RP6 a few weeks and am very happy with it. I know this unit is more than you want to spend but so far I have nothing bad to say about Rega so I second or third the recommendation to look into those. Others have also mentioned record cleaning machines and I just received the VPI HW16.5 which works well and has received favorable reviews on the internet. The unit is $649 but many places have deals where they give you extras for not much more. It is amazing what people have in vinyl that they will give away because it is collecting dust or taking up space since it has not been used in years. I ended up with a bunch of great rock and jazz from the 70's and now working on another co-worker for there 80's stuff. The challenge when you get into vinyl is storage, cleaning, and inventory. The TT purchase is the easy part.

Yep, this is an entry to find out weather you want to go down the TT road, I've been curious but knowing how much I had loved vinyl in the past I figured that my needs would be more demanding in the SQ arena.
On another note, I believe that Big Dan does own one with an upgrade to it that is offered from Uturn.

Great golly for you!! So happy for ya!. Both TT come with covers and I am partial to the Rega line. Set up I as so easy hemster,,,,,,,I mean even a monkey could do it,,,,,,he,,,,he,,,,,,Plent of you tube Verison to watch. With the Rega there is a reasonable upgrade path and I do like there sound and ease of use. No bells and whistles,,,all your money goes into better parts. As far as a pre amp with phono, I've hear my 5 TT through both the XSP-1 and the Pre-1 and both sound steller. Then one of the most inportant things you can do while saving for your TT is to purchase a Spin Clean disc washer for your newly acquired vinyl, also a carbon fiber brush to clean dust off of the vinyl just before you drop the needle on it. Nick, it's easy but I needed to call support for help on a couple of things... You must be wearing contacts to dial support.

Seeing this thread reminded me of something Emo teased us with over a year ago. Where is the turntable they hinted at???

CD I waited on it for awhile but no further info about it, so I went ahead and purchased the Rega. Whether or not they come out with a TT might also depend on how well the XPS-1 has been selling.

I had been using my turntable mainly to rip the vinyl to the computer for easier access for the family. But a buddy of mine from choir wanted to hear some vinyl that his hipster friends are pushing. So he bought Joni Mitchell's Hejira (a wonderful choice!) and is bringing it over for a listening party on Saturday. So I moved the tt into the family room so we could listen over the big system. Man it is fun to have it in there! I have been listening to at least two sides a night and having a ball. I will eventually move it back to transcription duties, but it is certainly fun to have it in the big rig.

I have owned some pretty terrific turntable/cartridge setups in my day. But I gotta say that the 25 minute limit of playback per side is what eventually drove me to digital playback. Just about the time you're gettin' yer groove on (pun intended), it's time to get up and flip the album. Talk about harshin' yer buzz!!
And one thing that vinyl will NEVER do is to provide an immersive multi-channel playback experience. I'm all digital now and I've never looked back...

Note to nay Sayers,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,90% os all my vinyl has NO Ricecrispys at all,I don't see or hear what you are talking about when you babble on and on about how terrible vinyl is compared to CD sound. I will not debate this point. End of story! Peace, Nick

I am on the fence if I will go this route. Really I need another Audio addiction like a hole in my head.
Whatever I decide I will come out ahead. I can either collect my moms albums and enjoy them or sell them and give her 50%. with over 1,000 albums there are bound to be some solid rares in that collection.
Thanks for all the input so far.

Groovetracer now has a nice Stainless Record weight that fits under the Rega covers too.

CD, excellent points! Vinyl surround sound is so completely lacking and bogus! And while I am so ADD as to enjoy that sides of a record last typically less than 20 minutes, changing records for Quadrophenia is a pain. Well said.

What improvements can I expect from these add ons? I am very interested to hear from you, or anyone else with this set up. I do have the Exact 2 mounted by Rega,,,,,,just to let you know. Thanks in advance, Nick

Thanks in advance, Nick Everything improved with the GT subplatter. Lower noise floor, greater detail, greater pitch stability. It was literally like a different and better table. I also added the Rega white belt but it was just a slight improvement in pitch stability. I also tried a red silicone belt but didn't like it. Tried the Jolida JD9 mk II upgraded version phono and it offered a very nice, warm and pleasant sound but I decided I preferred the more neutral and Dynamic sounding Avid Pellar.

Trey I'm sorry,,,but you don't go vinyl for surround sound, I do concede this point, also not for just background music,,,so if changing the LP side is a pain, then it may not be for you. I don't want to come off as harsh but there seams to be some people that think analog and digital can't live together . Cant we just love each other?? And realize that different formats have different purposes. Peace, Nick

novisnick, I do not think anyone thought vinyl was good for surround. It is, to quote myself, completely lacking and bogus. But I LOVE the surround sound silver discs I have.

Lol Start with just the $280 subplatter, you'll be glad you did.
