One more that just now came to mind is Jewel. She has an astonishing voice and is most certainly *very* beautiful. I have her album "Pieces Of You" and it is very, very well recorded. You have certainly been given a boatload of great recommendations. Give 'em a listen and get back to us with those you fancy most. This will aid us in making further recommendations... CD I agree with with you on both of your comments about Jewel.

If Anita Baker is not on the list so far, she should be.

I enjoy Margo Timmins from the Cowboy Junkies. Ella Fitzgerald has the best voice in the world I think, many, many of her recordings were very well done too. Kate Bush can sing with lovely tone, when she wants to. She can also shriek when she wants too! I have a weak spot for Donna Summer. Karen Carpenter had a wonderful voice, pretty poppy songs though. Joan Osborne sings with LOTS of soul. Oops, I almost forgot Jennifer Warnes who has a wonderful voice and has very well recorded albums. Trey In the arts it's hard to say one artist is better than another when you get to a certain level but I have to agree that Ella Fitzgerald has the most amazing female singing voice I've ever heard.

Can't forget Carole King and one of the best albums of the early 70s if not all time.

Looking for some recommendations for well recorded female vocalists other than the typical Allison Kraus, Patricia Barber, Norah Jones etc... Please share some of your favorites. You should pickup a copy of the SACD remaster for Carole King's masterpiece Tapestry. I have to say that's one of the greatest albums in history IMHO.

Some female vocalists in my collection which have captivating/compelling/melodic voices and are very well recorded:
* Carol Kidd, Dreamsville
Kidd is the UK's counterpart to Ella. Mostly Great American Songbook stuff. Downloadable from Linn Records.
* Dala, This Moment Is a Flash
Amazon recently began offering several Dala albums, which for a time were hard to get in the US (Dala is 2 Canadian gals).
* Dave's True Story (vocalist Kelly Flint), Unauthorized
Offbeat lounge-lizard "jazz noir." Recorded by Chesky.
* Jenna Mammina, Meant To Be, Under The Influence
Jenna deserves to be better known than she is. Recorded by Cookie Marenco at Blue Coast Records. Downloadable in various formats from Downloadsnow!
* Lynne Stanley, Lost In Romance
More Great American Songbook-type material. Also available from Downloadsnow!
* Rebecca Pidgeon, Slingshot, The Raven
First recorded by Decca, the latter by Chesky. Downloadable from HDTracks.
* Sareena Overwater, Blue Coast Special Event #27
Her first album, English-Scottish folk style, but she writes most of her own material. Recorded by Cookie Marenco, downloadable in several formats, including DSD.
* Shelby Lynne, Identity Crisis, Just A Little Lovin'
Sultry voice, country blues. Shelby writes most of her own material, plays all of the instruments on one album, and sings her own harmonies.
