wbrosheaKEF Uni-Q perhaps: www.kef.com/html/en/showroom/custom_installed_speakers/ci_series/speaker/index.html#filter=14,2,6 markThere is just no need anymore to put the Surrounds high up as the combination of ear-height Surrounds and elevated Top/Height speakers provides for a better immersion than one do-it-all surround can. There should be some distance between Surrounds and Top/Heights but you can do that by putting the Top speakers closer to the center of the ceiling. Just as they do it commercial cinema. The two ceiling rows can be at 60° elevation (front-back view).

I went over to Bjorn's today in San Antonio Tx and purchased a pair of Def Tech Monitor 65's for my stereo set up and tv watching. I always go see Carl Schwartz at Bjorn's when I am in need of anything electronic or HT equipment. While my wife and I were there, Carl showed us the new Atmos setup they have and I must say I was very impressed. Keep in mind I have an 11.2 system in our home theater and I love it but the Atmos sounded pretty good as well. I liked the way the sound seemed to incorporate the overhead and not just the back and side surrounds and it seems to do this with less speakers. Will be intresting to see where this new technology goes. If you are in the SA area, head over to Bjorn's and see Carl and have a listen, it's worth it. BTW...my wife was very impressed, this coming from a woman who thinks We have way to many speakers in our house.

Here's the D&M guideline for the elevated speakers we discussed earlier.

Sorry I am new to in-wall speakers. Is there any reason why I would need to use the CI200QS (square)over the CI200QR (round). The square one is listed as for in wall and in ceiling, the round one is listed for in ceiling only. They look like the same speaker except for the front face shape, is there any other difference/reason why I couldn't use the round one for in wall. The wife likes the round look better.

When you design a speaker for ceiling mounting, you have to be a bit more careful. The suspension on the woofer cone can sag over time (because gravity is always trying to pull the cone "forward") and, of course, you have to make sure your mounting system is secure enough that you don't have to worry about it vibrating loose and falling on someone's head. Because of this, some wall mount speakers may not really be appropriate for ceiling mounting, but I can't see why any ceiling mount speaker wouldn't work if mounted in a wall. All I can think of is that, in some speakers where you can point the tweeter in different directions, this feature might be useful for ceiling mount and sort of wasted for wall use..... but that wouldn't be a problem per-se. (I suppose it's possible that, on some specific ceiling-mounted speaker with a positionable tweeter, the tweeter might flop around and not stay in place if you mounted it vertically, but I've personally never seen this happen.) It's probably just aesthetics - people do seem to favor square grills for wall mounting and round grills for ceiling...... Sorry I am new to in-wall speakers. Its been a long time since I built my subs and had to consider that issue. More importantly though, I would love to get your opinion on either Emotiva's UAW 8.2s or UAC 8.2s for use as atmos front and rear heights. As a recap My current room has a vaulted, sloped (left to right) ceiling so no other way to really do an atmos setup other than heights. Would the UAWs or UACs have the necessary dispersion that Erwin alluded to as being beneficial for atmos? I like the KEFs, but like the UAWs/UACs price. I have a diy 7.1 system, so nothing is really going to be timber matched, so that's not an issue. Well it may be an issue but there isn't anything I can really do about it. Now in ten years when the kids no longer need the play room, which was originally a home theater when we bought the house, my setup will drastically change, but for now I have to work with what I have.

Now all we need is an Emotiva announcement, because without some assurance that they will be coming out with an Atmos pre-pro, I will probably go to another company for my next pre-pro.

Based on some comments Lonnie has made, they have been working with Dolby Labs.I don't think the question is really "if", rather than when. I imagine it's going to be a while...

I'm not alright with that approach. If Emotiva wants to act like the big companies, then like the big companies they will have to come out with the latest greatest in a competitive timeframe. The XMC-1 took way too long and still doesn't have the promised advanced room calibration software. This to the point that I'm not sure I want one anymore, especially now that the new advanced feature, Home Dolby Atmos is now hitting the market even before the XMC-1 is fully operational. If I knew for sure that Emotiva was going to come up with an Atmos pre-pro and had a ballpark date, then I would wait, because I love my Emotiva products. But if Emotiva goes dark about what they are doing, I'll probably go dark with Emotiva.

If you read the Dolby press release from a couple of days ago(link above), here is an excerpt: "Additional manufacturers who have committed to delivering future Dolby Atmos products include Datasat Digital Entertainment, Emotiva Audio Corp, Outlaw Audio, Storm Audio, and NHT (Now Hear This)." then your question of Emotiva having a future Dolby Atmos product has been answered. Whether they remain relatively silent until release of said Dolby Atmos products, remains to be seen. Personally I'd prefer the silence, but then "too each their own". Personally it's been proven on the Lounge that Big Dan is DIHD and DIHD, so how he handles future product announcements will sooner or later be revealed. I for one won't "Go Dark With Emotiva", based on future product announcements no matter how he proceeds.

Based on Dolby, probably. We have learned that commiting to timelines is difficult, but I would think that it would be much easier to say what's in the pipeline. We are getting much less of that communication too. There is no "perfect" communication, but if you're going to go silent..... That certainly has an impact on the community. Would absolutely make Emofest less "fun". I hope that some compromise can be reached.

I personally asked lots of questions of Dan, Lonnie and Ray at the Los Angeles EmoFest On The Road stop, and as well got answers to all of my questions. So the communication in person has not stopped. As for your "Yes or No" question being answered, the Dolby press release answered that for you. No it doesn't say what type of Dolby Atmos products, but taking what Lonnie said not too long ago in to consideration, you'll probably come to the same conclusion as I have. While I may prefer silence, I don't believe the silence end of the spectrum will happen either. Personally I've read on the Lounge since the LA show that a few products are in the pipeline, so the silence isn't so deafening after all.

I've eaten a lot of Emotiva grass from Farmer Dan's friendly inviting pasture, but if the farm help is going to get arrogant like this, I'll be on the lookout for greener grass. I'm just a customer! Just! That's all! I'm not an insider like you and I don't want to scour the internet for unreliable 3rd party hints as to what Emotiva may or may not do. Attachments:
