I am trying to get a feel for if the HDMI handshake "issue" is widespread or just "picky" with some devices. So, owners please chime in with a vote and list your related gear.

For what it is worth, all HDMI handshake issues regardless of receiver are of the "picky" type. Don't believe me? Just google HDMI handshake issues and your favorite model. You will find plenty of examples. The best way to minimize issues is to match your source out with respect to resolution to your display. In other words, don't always rely on AUTO. force 1080 out if that is what your display's native resolution is. But even after that, some devices just won't play nice with each other. Usually it is devices that don't follow HDMI standards properly. (think overseas players with bittorrent capabilities) Cable and SAT set tops are also notorious due to the inconsistent firmware updates or just older hardware. PC video cards also may not play nice.

I haven't used my Fusion with a cable or sat box so I cannot comment on those but I have had zero issues so far.
To date, I have connected: Roku 3, Apple TV 3 Samsung BD player Asus laptop via HDMI and a Sega Dreamcast via a VGA box conntected to an Octava converter/switch outputting at 480p.
My display is a 40" RCA 1080p LED that I picked up several months ago for $250. I have it connected with a pair of Def Tech Mythos 2 and a Mythos 3 for the fronts and a pair of Airmotiv 4 speakers for the rears. This has been one hell of a set up for my bedroom.

bootman, I hear yeah. This is why I want people to list their actual associated gear. I am fortunate so far, my previous Denon ( the one I would ultimately replace with the Fusion) and the XMC-1 both work great, never a hiccup with the HDMI deal. But a large % of the reports so far, here and other sites, bring up this issue. I am hoping to see if it is the vocal minority or if I should just wait. I am trying to scale down my secondary set up take the USP-1 out of the equation. The S/Q reports on the unit are very good........

HDMI is just pure evil but we are all now forced to use it.

I had problems with my first unit (10s HDMI switching), but the replacement unit works great (approx 5 seconds for switching, no drop-outs or pops). I use it with a Comcast STB, Amazon FireTV, and a Sony BDP.

broncsrule21: quick update, a new replacement Fusion from Emotiva fixed all my HDMI problems, as I'm reporting here: emotivalounge.proboards.com/post/693826/thread . Changed my vote and I will update my long review soon, as well. If you buy one from Emotiva with the latest firmware, your odds based on my experience have greatly improved. Also, as an impartial observer, the Broncs do rule. My money's on them this year.

At least with Emotiva you have a worry free 30 day return policy to try it out with your gear.

My setup includes DirectTv as well, and I get several drops per hour, although it seems to happen more frequently on some channels and hardly ever on others.

Got my 8100 two weeks ago. My HDMI devices:
Roku HD (720p) Seiki SR4KP1 Multi-region BD player (1080i) ePVision PHD-208 OTA HDTV Tuner (720p)
Output is to an old 42" Vizio GV42L HDTV, up to 1080i, but with 720 native resolution.
No HDMI issues that I can attribute to the 8100, switching has just a short delay, not something I would consider "lag".

8100 works like a charm with my panasonic 720p plasma... No handshake issues with that display at all.
with a 2011 Sony 55" However... Forget about it. Does not work. I can't pass 1080p through the receiver at all (picture cuts in/out or doesn't appear at all). If I drop devices to 720p, 1080i or 480p, they might work. Get random hdcp error messages too.

Did you swap the HDMI cable going to the display? Is it longer than 10M?

I have seen your posts, not only here but on the Klipsch forum and so forth. My FIL has had handshake issues with his Sony tv via HDMI as well. I am leaning more towards the Sony being a detractor than the Fusion. His Panasonic 60 plasma had no issues at all passing signal and never had any issues with fading of black areas. Also, it could be your cable or satellite provider....maybe even an Apple product or streamer. I had audio and video drop out issues with my Sherbourn SR-120. I contacted Emotiva support and they gave me several ideas to check where the problems were stemming from. Recently I changed to the newest X1 platform through Comcast and all of my issues are gone. It literally had nothing to do with the receiver, it was the cable box. I hope you get things squared away. Not sure if it is worthy of finger pointing at the Fusion when it could be so many other contributing factors. I hope you get things squared away though.

Did you swap the HDMI cable going to the display? Is it longer than 10M? You bet. Tried cables from monster (400 and 700 series), rocketfish, dynex, tributaries, Sony, oem, monoprice (both regular and redmere) wbox and vanco (regular and redmere). No change. All cables were under 10' other than the redmere cables which were 25' and 35'. Even using the cheapest cables, receivers from Pioneer, Sony, Marantz, Anthem worked fine. Even a cheap $13 monoprice hdmi switch worked. Have tried changing settings on the sources to output the lowest quality signal and still had no luck. Even at 480i, I could not get a stable image from a PS3 or Blu-Ray player. It just doesn't like the Sony TV. I can have a service tech come take a look at the tv, but since I have no issues when devices are connected directly to the TV or through the other receivers/devices... I'm pretty sure I could predict what they are going to point at as the issue. Thanks though! Has anyone compiled a list of display devices that have been problematic? I saw some posts with Samsung tvs and a mitsubishi projector also giving users similar headaches.

Not sure if it is worthy of finger pointing at the Fusion when it could be so many other contributing factors. I hope you get things squared away though. Thanks for the pointers... I have suspected the Sony as giving me some hdmi handshake troubles, but if I remove the sr8100 from the equation, all problems disappear. receivers from other manufacturers in the same setup give me no issues at all. The black levels were poor on the panasonic as well, so that has been consistent on both displays. I also threw a 1080p panasonic professional display onto the Sherbourn... Poor black levels, but at least a consistent picture (the pro display might not have any hdmi cec at all...). I have used used two different cable providers and three different stb's, all with the same results. The appletv has been problem-free for a couple years, mixed and matched with different hardware. If I bump the appletv down to 720p instead of 1080p... Hdmi drops (almost) disappear completely. Also... It seems like audio causes the drop. If my appletv and ps3's are idle in a menu, the 1080p picture would be ok. As soon as I start moving the cursor and getting the audible clicks and bumps when I move the on screen cursor around, the picture drops. This makes me think the SR8100 just can't handle the a/v signal somehow. When the picture drops, the SR8100's blue "no signal" screen appears... So the combination of these things makes me point towards the receiver and not the other connected devices. I I thought I had the issue pinned down somewhere in the combination of PS3 -> SR8100 -> Sony TV, but I have removed the PS3 and the issues are still present. Thought the same thing with my stb's and even if they aren't connected... Same issue. Im running firmware v1.52.02.51 on the receiver. The TV is a Sony KDL55EX723. I might just use an outboard hdmi switcher and use optical/coax for audio... But if I'm going to do that, I might as well just use either the spare rotel or Sony ES I have sitting in the basement. I'll loose the hd audio, but I rarely watch Blu-Rays on the main floor... It's mostly used for cable/Netflix/Hulu anyhow.

Man, sorry to hear that. Sounds like you have tried just about everything. Hope you get something figured out. Maybe give one of the techs at Emotiva a call. Probably get a different answer if you talk to someone else. Good luck!
