I found a good write up on the chase ss18.1 subwoofers on data-bass. It appears to drop off REALLY quickly after 45ish Hz so they are more than likely reaching their limits if you have setup your system to try and reproduce the full spectrum. They also stated that the enclosures are about 4.5 cu ft so "theoretically" a stereo integrity ht18 or Dayton ultimax should drop right in and be quite comfortable in the enclosure space. They have quite a bit more excursion and very reasonable power requirements. So you should be able to reach the lower frequencies without an issue. I say two of these, remember the price is Canadian dollars which will be less in US cash , I have one and love it.

Your theater is fantastic! I did notice your room treatment maybe needs something more substantial. www.gikacoustics.comI think this might be your your "next step" Can you be more specific. I have several 2" and 4" ATS acoustic panels.

I really appreciate your help here. So, what do I need to do? Change my subs? I did a fair amount of research and they got rave reviews. I'm surprised they're not performing better.

I have several 2" and 4" ATS acoustic panels. First reflection points are the most important. Don't forget the ceiling. Also bass traps in the corners, and along the wall corners. If you submit a drawing of your room with your current treatments GIK will walk you through the whole process free of charge. They are truely a first rate company. They will treat you the same as a celebrity client. Send a drawing of your room along with pictures and they will set you up.

I'm actually surprised as well, I've heard a lot of good things about the chase subwoofers but the measurements taken by Josh at data-bass back up what you say you're hearing.

So, there's been a few subs recommended. How would you suggest I choose one? also, should I change the Dayton amp? And will the Dirac in the XMC-1 make adjustments/corrections for the subs?

I actually do have the first reflection point covered for my seat. ; ) as for bass traps... How do I know if I need bass traps? I was planning on doing the front wall first and change some gear and then see where I stand.

The three driver that have been recommended are very similar, the mach 5 is my favorite but I'm biased..haha The stereo integrity is the best bang for the buck, the ultimax handles more power so will go a little louder. Really I don't think anyone could tell the difference between the three in a blind test. The Dayton amp is definitely underpowered for those subs. Do you have one or two of the Dayton amps?

Ivor and myself are sort of biased towards the Mach 5 stuff, they are actually built in house about 2hrs from me here in Winnipeg, Manitoba, I love my IXL-18, the price on his website also includes shipping within North America

I have a single Dayton amp. I'm not married to it though. What do you suggest? The theater is purely for movies. I might listen to music in the theater 2-4 times a year maybe. And that's only if I want to hear some crazy bass. But I do want my LFE to be felt and be impressive in such a way it brings 'life' to the movie. thanks!

I've listened to mine in both the sealed enclosure Chad linked to and in 5cu ft 20Hz ported enclosures. I can hear no difference in sound quality but the ported enclosures are quite a bit louder. Diysoundgroup makes a ported flat pack that you can assemble with wood glue and duct tape (clamps of course are better) they are that easy. You'll need to paint them or veneer them but they are really good. I use pro amps to power my subs But they require a fan swap to be quiet enough to be used in room. If you're gear is located in an adjacent room this is not an issue.

I've recently become a big fan of acoustical treatments....
I have custom sized floor-to-ceiling GIK Bass Traps in all four corners of my HT and am in the process of installing Acousticmac 2x4 and 2x6 panels on the walls. (both companies have been a pleasure to deal with, btw)
Adding the traps and panels have been THE biggest improvement I have ever made. I've been holding off on buying am XMC-1 until I finish installing my panels. (hint: laser level is your BEST friend!) I want to evaluate the XMC-1 in the best possible environment I can, but I'm running out of time!!!
Here is an older picture.... Since I took this, I've added panels behind the center channel, on the left and right walls, and on the rear walls. Every time I add more panels, I re-run the Emo-Q (or whatever its called...) on my UMC-200 - and its like somebody bought me an entirely new system. Getting excited to be finished and get an XMC-1 to see what that can do!
When all is finished, I plan on posting here in the Lounge to get the great feed back you have been receiving...

Thanks for sharing bud! I'm not sure if you saw my pictures. I have put up several diffusors and absorption panels. I do have to deaden the front wall though. As as for bass traps... What were you hearing that indicated you needed bass traps?

What were you hearing that indicated you needed bass traps? The entire room was an echo chamber... Specifically, before the bass traps were installed, very deep bass sounded muddy. Occasionally, the trim rings on one of my can lights would buzz. Adding the traps stopped that. I also don't hear my subwoofer when I'm other parts of my house as much. Aside from cleaning up bass, the traps greatly enhanced the sound of my front left/right speakers - most certainly because the traps are directly behind my speakers.
