Hey guys
Is this normal or even okay? I just turned on the system with volume on the pre-amp down all the way, no music. I'm hearing a grainy buzz coming from the 803D tweeters.
I called emotiva, dude on the phone said it was normal and is expected from an amp that's putting out 500 watts per channel. I've never had this issue with the anthem integrated 225.
Is there anything I can do to make it go away?

Hello,
I am the person you spoke with, and you informed me that you had to be closer than 1 foot you hear a buzz/hiss. Is this not the case?

Yes but I've never had this issue before and it bothers me. Is there anything that can be done to make it go away? Cables? Power cords? Etc etc? Or is it just the amp itself causing this noise?

Try the amp with no input cables plugged into it(rca/xlr). Power the amp off while unplugging/plugging cables to avoid potential loud pops.

I was told same thing with XPA-5 buzzing is normal, but no Amp should be buzzing in my opinion. The dilemma is that I also have Rotel RMB-1095 running other surround speakers in 11.2 setup with no BUZZ. My front are powered by (2) XPA-1 also no buzz. Both Rotel and XPA-1 are dead silent with or without music.
I did some reading, buzzing could be DC voltages leak and that is harmful to your speakers, specially those tweeters. Absolutely it not NORMAL from my understanding.
I decided to keep the amp because of the shipping cost sending it back. Good luck with your AMP.

If you don't hear it past a foot away, you are fine. That's pretty normal for many amps, at least in my experience.

i had the same problem, my wife could hear it from 3 feet away. 2 channels were louder than the others. did multiple tries with and without inputs connected, connecting channels to different speakers and they finally took it in and fixed the problem. but it took them a while to track it down because the issue was so small. we were in constant conversation. i would press the issue before you give up. right now my amp is dead quiet.

Michael Chad is the person I spoke to over the phone at emotiva and he claims its normal for a such a powerful amp to make noise especially less than a feet away.....I find it hard to believe that emotiva's reference amp would have such basic issues that should've been rectified at the factory quality control level. Just because I don't hear the noise from more than a feet away doesn't mean it's good for my speakers does it? especially the diamond tweeters.

I doubt highly that a slight hiss/buzz will damage your tweeters.....just saying.

I don't buy it. My 7 channel McIntosh amp is dead silent on any source with volume at 50 on the Emotiva preamp with ear 6 inches from tweeter. I also would start unplugging different sources starting with the AC of each one. You might find the culprit there

I have a slight hiss from my XPR-2 and a slight hiss/buzz from my XPR-5. This is normal imho. The hiss was louder in my old XPA-5 gen 1 I used to own. The XPR-2's hiss sounds a little "purer". I don't recall the last time I listened to my favorite music 1 foot away from the speaker...how does it sound from the listening position? Aldo, I wouldn't worry about the diamond tweeter, it's the hardest substance in the world so I'm sure it's fine.

My hiss is a little more chocolatier!,,,,, IMHO,,,,,,,,,But then again, I don't care for vanilla very much,,,,,,,,he,,,,,he,,,,,,,he,,,,,,, Also, I can almost smell the cherry On top! Good luck, I'm just yanking everyone's chain!!

Glad I ran across this thread. I'm running both an XPR-2 and XPR-5 with Tekton's Enzo theater setup (high sensitivity speakers). When listening ~1 foot away all channels have some level of hiss. Certain channels add notable 60Hz buzz on top of the hiss (with and without my UMC-1 RCA outputs connected). The channels with 60Hz buzz/hum are all coming from my XPR-5. I've only recently added the XPR-5. I've had the XPR-2 for a couple years and LOVE it.
I narrowed it down to channels 1, 2, and 4 on my XPR-5 that have the 60Hz buzz on top of the hiss. I'll be e-mailing Emotiva shortly to see what can be done. Very encouraged to heard tchaik was able to get his XPR-5 dead quiet.
Also, for channels 1, 2, and 4 I can hear the buzz clearly (it's quiet, but very present) when I'm 6+ feet away from the connected speakers. This can't be normal given the excellent performance I've gotten from my XPR-2. Not excited for shipping the amp back, but I figure better sooner than later.

Is that what that little buzz is? I'll check my wires for interference. Thanks!

I agree hearing 60Hz buzz out past 6+ feet is abnormal. Especially for an amp of this caliber (my XPR-2 is virtually silent, does have minor hiss at ~1 foot). Good thought on the speaker wires. I did go ahead and try swapping out some of my long (30+ ft) speaker cable runs for a short (~10ft) run placing the speaker near the amp. I found the 60Hz buzz at 6+ feet listening distance was still present with the short speaker cable run. I've e-mailed Emotiva Tech Support. Have to see what solution is recommended.

Yes it's quite disappointing when you take the risk and blindly purchase a supposedly high end audiophile quality item over the Internet from a company that prides itself as a value to performance leader only to find out the product is lacking some basic audio manners. NOISE!!!
If tchaik got emotiva to rectify the same issue he had with his XPR 5 which is now dead quiet, than Emo should honor that precedence and fix the problem. Especially when it's in the 30 day return window period. Heck I just received it 2 days ago. It's bad business to simply pass the buck onto "hey it's normal"
No it's not normal for a high end reference amplifier to have noise at any distance or level.
I can't believe it!!! Arghhhhhh...

I have slight hiss when my ear is close but that has been with all amps I have owned, IMO it doesn't affect the SQ or my listening so I really could care less, my .02

If you jam your ears right upto it, there's a buzz. Pretty standard fare. It's more like a mild hiss. Unless it's pretty audible from more than say two or three feet away, it's really normal.

Besides this inaudible noise at beyond 1 foot away, has the sound improved in your system when listening to music? I think my XPR-5 is an excellent amp and I can also hear this hiss at 1 foot away so I highly doubt this won't be considered normal. And I agree with you, it's very tough buying something especially audio equipment without listening to it first. Luckily for me, I have heard every Emotiva gear prior to purchase except for the XMC-1.
