XMC-1 Volume

I just noticed that my XMC does not play any louder from about -4 to +11 with my XPR-5 amp and Dirac preset.
I reset the unit by the rear power switch and used different sound formats but no difference in volume.
I have not used other presets yet.
Anybody has noticed this or any idea about it.

From the Manual, page 43

Max Volume
The Max Volume setting allows you to configure the maximum Volume Level which can be
selected from the front panel Volume knob or the Volume buttons on the remote control. This
setting controls the Volume setting in the Main Zone, and can be set from -30 dB to +11 dB in
1 dB increments.

Note; The Max Volume setting is a safety feature intended to prevent you (or other users) from
accidentally turning the Volume on your XMC-1 up too high; it does NOT prevent Level Trims
from raising the overall Level or gain of the XMC-1, or specifically limit input or output levels.

Can you set it to go up and down by 0.5db? Right now mine only does full db

+11? What db level is that measuring in your room? In mine, my ears would be bleeding!

And bmoney...the excerpt of the manual in the post above yours says 1 db increments...fits with what you experience.

This is where you all need to adjust the trims so the mv at 0.0 is playing 75db

-20 should NOT be loud

Correctly adjusted, 0 should play 85 dB in average and peak at 105 dB for movies.
For me that results in peak around 95 dB when playing music with volume at -20 dB. 
That is quite loud an not only IMHO.

I was referring if you use BR spears and munsil to set reference. Which is 75db at 0.0

So we should all configure our XMC-1s to something that is not standard nor THX reference?

It's pretty standard for 75db for mains and 85db for subs as standard With calibration discs FYI. Since the tones are -30db. Which will give you 105 and 115 peaks.

Who cares if it's loud or not? That isn't solving OP's problem.

I noticed this problem before. The other speaker presets worked fine. There was no response from Emotiva in the thread and I did not call about it.

I'm pretty sure it went away, but I don't know how. Last night, I was listening to some music recorded at a low level and cranking it past 0.0 did increase the volume.

I've rerun Dirac and mucked with some other settings since having the problem. Or perhaps Dirac has some kind of limiter due to the boost applied for correction. The Secrets review talked about an issue with TI DSP limiting voltage. All just guesses.

I assumed 85db is actually reference level, so to have a reference capable system, you need 20db dynamic headroom from each channel. As for the many blu-ray calibration discs(Spears&Munsil/DVE/DisneyWOW) they use 75db to calibrate with their test tones because 10db less is easier to tolerate during a calibration. The LFE channel is 10db louder, thus reference being 95db and the need to handle 115db. Yes these are specs for properly calibrated Movie Theaters, so in your home are really for the capability of the mains and surrounds to reach 105db and subwoofer(s) at 115db at the main listening position. Personally listening at these levels for extended periods of time will probably cost any of us in the long run in the hearing department.

With 105 peak reference SPL is 85 dB and not 75 dB at 0 dB volume, since there is 20 dB headroom.
"THX Certified Receivers reproduce studio Reference Level, 85dB SPL with 20dB of headroom."

Seems like you are the one who needs to do your research.

As "repeetavx" has already stated, make sure that SetUp--->Preferences--->Max Volume, is set accordingly.

The volume goes up to +11 but the level stays the same from about -4 to +11 in Dirac preset.

I've seen this. It's not a max volume problem. The XMC-1 volume goes to +11.0. The speakers just don't play louder.

As I mentioned, the volume level (db) does not go louder from about -4db to +11db in Dirac preset.
Which means the db level in -4 is the same as db level in +11.

That's odd. Have you measures them with an spl meter to confirm they aren't getting louder?

Could it be possible you are reaching driver compression levels in your speakers and they aren't capable of going any louder?

I'll admit I've not had to go above -20db on my XMC-1 volume, as anything higher just isn't comfortable listening for me.
