My Queen City
I live in Worshington State near a dump of a city we used to consider God's Country. It was blessed with 2 glacier filled/rain forested mountain ranges and some of the best scenery, hiking, skiing, fishing, boating, camping and sightseeing near ocean. salt and fresh water on the planet. What a beautiful cosmopolitan city with world class acoustically renowned Benaroya Hall for symphony and opera. Wonderful restaurants from every ethnic culture. Great sports teams/stadiums. Famous Pioneer Square and the Pike Place Market. It used to be a city I was proud to say I lived in and near for almost 67 years. Now many citizens have decided the city belongs to the freeloaders homeless. When I was young we called them bums. (That word will now probably be deleted from my post). However, they were taken care of by nice folks and Gospel missions, etc with food and assistance as needed. They usually stayed in local shelters or even quietly in alleys. I haven't been into Seattle in the last 10-15 years except for work or necessary medical care.
Now every block, sidewalk, on-ramp, off-ramp, park, abandoned building, downtown and even residential street parking spaces are filled with filth, feces, garbage, tents, and needles. Formerly regular human beings are now almost unrecognizable with drug and alcohol abuse.
What has happened to our city formerly called the Queen City and for a number of recent decades the Emerald City?
I very seldom cry. This is an exception. Sad, very sad!
(In 1869, Russell and Ferry, a Portland real estate firm, gave Seattle the epithet the Queen City. They issue a pamphlet titled "The Future Queen City of the Pacific." The epithet lasted until 1982. That year, the Seattle-King County Convention and Visitors Bureau adopted "The Emerald City" as the epithet for Seattle and incorporated it into a logo to promote tourism.)

Last Saturday my wife and I went to see John Legend at the Hollywood Bowl. I'm not familiar with his music; my wife knows his more popular songs, but the main reason we went is because a neighboring city sponsored a block of discounted tickets as a community event so we took advantage of the lower price. From the get-go, whatever deaf person was mixing the sound started it at 11 and went up from there. Legend's voice was distorted, like when you put the mic right up to your mouth and talk or sing very loudly so that the VU needles fly into the red - that's what it sounded like and the instruments and backup singers were like that, too. The mix was a loud, muddy mess, and harsh, too because of an overemphasis on the mids and upper mids. On a couple of numbers, Legend accompanied himself on a Yamaha grand piano and even the piano sounded horrible, like a harpsichord. I've been to the Bowl many times and never was the volume that high, nor the mix muddy or harsh but I guess there's always a first time. Overall the songs were decent but he made the mistake of choosing to do two covers and he should have stuck with his own material. His rendition of "What's Goin' On" just clearly demonstrated that he's no Marvin Gaye, his voice clearly lacking the silky, controlled and soulful quality of the original, with the comparison made worse because he sang it in a slightly lower key which made his voice sound even heavier. Then he did an acapella version of "God Only Knows" and totally overdid it like he was competing on American Idol. The gentle, reflective mood and style of the Beach Boy's original version was far superior. In Legend's defense, I think he may have been hoarse from singing so loud. Shame on the sound crew - they did one lousy, lousy job. The first half of the show was quite different. It featured classical selections by the Hollywood Bowl orchestra. While it was an unusual contrast, the purpose was to honor an organization that provided music education/performance opportunities for underprivileged youth. Many of them joined the orchestra regulars for some of the numbers. Unlike Legend's portion, the sound of the orchestra was much, much better. The volume was lower, the music dynamic and there was clarity with the instruments so you could really appreciate the performance. That said, given the lower volume and it being classical music, there was a bunch of crowd noise from rude patrons who treated it like background music, showing no respect whatsoever for the musicians. Now when Legend came on maybe they were still being rude and talking but the music was so loud they got drowned out. For those who strive for concert-like sound from their systems, don't strive for what I heard on Saturday! Oh my, it would have been much better to put on a Blu Ray concert.

Thanks for sharing monkumonku What a shame the evening was such a let down because of the mixers on the board. A night out with the Mrs is always a good night out though!

It was nice to get out and there were some good selections but I just kept coming back to how poor the sound was, especially in a venue that is known for having good acoustics. Even my wife, who is perfectly happy listening to a transistor radio and doesn't share my fussiness about audio, thought the person(s) on the sound board did a very poor job!

There is nothing worse than bad live sound like that. I was at Sting and Annie Lennox here in Cincy at Riverbend, and I vowed I'd never go there again unless they improved the sound. How can you mess up Sting and Annie Lennox? They managed! Luckily, they added a 2nd stage on the same site and the sound at that one is far better. It got better at the main stage, but it still is often far too loud and far too distorted. Mark

It is very sad to see a beautiful city slowly dying. I hope there is a solution to this crisis. An attention grabbing documentary. Thanks for posting ChuckieNut.

The problem of how to deal with the homeless is difficult. Although some are truly bums, some became homeless through no fault of their own.
Some had medical bills above their insurance coverage and lost their homes to those bills Some served our country in war, and came home with PTSD that the VA is not equipped to treat Many were over-prescribed opioid drugs by their own doctors who then failed to identify the subsequent addiction I feel the sorriest for women with children who all become fodder for predators once they're on the streets
We have insufficient shelters to handle the rising tide of homeless, and the Federal Government has decided that having sufficient treatment and facilities for the mentally ill is not a priority.
Despite my sympathy for the non-bum homeless population, I still don't donate money to street beggars. It merely propagates alcohol and drug addictions in the majority of cases.
Nevertheless, a solution is needed, and needed soon. I just wish I knew what it was. The shelters that exist won't take disruptive drunk and stoned people (nor should they) - but somewhere must be created for them. Otherwise they stay on the street corners and turn all our cities into Seattle.

Otherwise they stay on the street corners and turn all our cities into Seattle. On the surface, I understand your thoughts Boom. Your are obviously a very nice and caring person. (My bold = baloney!) My comment is that we had almost exactly the same situation in the 70's, 80's and 90's. Same medical bills, war veterans, PTSD, mediocre VA, high use of pain killing drugs, cocaine, alcohol, etc, I never saw feces in the streets. Why are the sidewalks, parks and even neighborhoods now filled with many thousands of "homeless." The term homeless in itself implies that none of this was their fault. There are many places to get help. food, medical care, mental care, and housing. They are too far gone on drugs to even go down the street for help. The huge majority of them have zero reason to blame anyone but themselves. In this day and age anyone who turns to heavy drugs is an idiot, plain and simple. A number of times in the past I have been given a bottle full of Vicodin after one of my 5 very painful surgeries. I took 2-5 and never took another. Everyone these days knows that prescription pain meds can be addictive, hello. IMO, way, way too many people think the government owes them everything, no self control, ambition, hard work needed. I don't mean in any way to get into politics but the social trend generally over the last 10 years or so is moving swiftly toward socialism. Very sad! I have no sympathy for them or the "immediately homeless" folks who sneak into our country every day by the thousands.. The small percentage of them who are mentally ill have plenty of government help available.

Shop Emotiva newest Monoblocks here, emotiva.com/collections/amps/products/hc-1This quoted from the site, guess its not much of a secret society anymore! 🤯 “The Joys of Joining the Monoblock Club All of the models in our XPA Gen3 line of amplifiers perform really well and sound superb. However, to a true audiophile, “there’s just something about a monoblock,” and that probably won’t ever change. Because each channel has its own amplifier, its own dedicated power supply, and its own chassis and power cable, you’ll never have to even wonder about interactions between the channels, or about running a tiny bit short of power when a particularly demanding piece of music comes along. Owning monoblocks is like owning a sports car: you may not need them, but you know you want them, and here’s your chance.” Obviously they forgot to include the application on line! Sure hope they remember to include it in the packaging. 😋

I'm surprised I haven't seen any comments about the latest podcast. Maybe I missed them being in the woods all weekend.
Good to hear another FW for the RMC is coming, and XMC-2/RMC-1L also soon. The Atmos speakers sound interesting, as does the Virtual Copper for wireless subs.
