I have a pair of these big 'uns and notice they can get quite warm after some extended play time. I have mine mounted on their sides, which should be OK since one can flip the LEDs to work this way. Anyone else notice this (gets hot), and use any kind of cooling fans like those from Cool Components (CPDF Dual Fan Cooling Unit) or is this a waste of money?

No I don't think it's okay. I advice you to put them back. Don't stack it on the ground if you have carpet as well. Stack it on top of the XPA-5. That's a 30 watt class A powered amp. It puts out a healthy amount of heat. It has large vents on the top to vent it efficiently.

I cannot see that mounting them sideways would affect the sound. I would still have them horizontal as designed and have all equipment in a proper rack or stand. But that is just me

I would think it is a not a good idea on their side. There are vents on top for the hot air to get out but on the side the hot air would most probably get trapped inside.
Try them the right way up and I think you will be surprised in the heat difference.

These amps are convection cooled. They pull cool air through the bottom and vent the warm air out the top. On their sides this process won't work properly. They need to be placed upright for proper cooling. Nice speakers by the way!

Still conflicted here. They are designed so you can use them like this, as long as there is some open space on the sides, which I have here?. Otherwise Emotive would never had designed the LEDs to flip? Mine is also an issue of where to put them, as there is no room elsewhere with my set-up, and, they do weigh 100 lbs so they can't go on the glass table. Looks like I need to try some fans to force some air through it. My question is even when mounted upright (not on their sides), have any members owning these notice they WILL run warm when used for extended periods? Are they thermal protected? Note - I have never had any issues so far, but noticed they will get quite warm.

Mine run cold to warm. Why are they sideways? They are designed to sit flat for convection to work properly.

Just because the LEDs flip does not meen they are designed to be placed on their sides. They are CONVECTION cooled. However, using a fan to force air through them should be sufficient to keep them cool. They are 30 watts class A as garbulky said. That's like having a 30 watt lightbulb on all the time. It will generate some heat even at idle.

My award winning XPR-1s will heat my room up when run for exended periods of time. I do nelieve cooling would be more efficient sitting with the bents on top and bottom, that said, I do have a set of Sherbourn C-12 cooling fans on mine. They keep the amps cooler but the room still heats up. My cave is about 1,750 cu ft. With the doors and windows closed and it being summer it can get uncomfortable unless i turn the AC down.
I guess ill call it conditioning for tubes!!

You are making a an assumption based solely on an LED orientation. FWIW, the XPA-2 and XPA-1 has its LED set that way as well. The more telling reason to show actual design is the vents on top. Maybe even And if I'm not mistaken the vents on the side. Not sure if the XPR -1 has them. Also if you notice the Emotiva label is not condusive to the design. Don't get me wrong, I can see why you would want them that way. That is a beautiful setup. BTW

I'm 99.9% sure that the three different orientation displays of the LED meter has nothing to do with being able to place your XPR-1's on their side. In other words just a preference in the way you view the LED's. Personally I think you are doing your XPR-1's much harm by placing them on their side as opposed to the proper placement which would be sitting on their feet. If you want verification, I would call Emotiva and ask if the way you are placing them orientation-wise is a proper placement, as this could more than likely affect any questions having to do with the manufacturers warranty that you might have in the future.

If man was ment to fly,,,,,,,he whould have been born wit,,,,,,,,,,,,wait! ,,,,,,,wait,,,,,,,,,wrong thread!! If the unit was ment to be placed on its side it would have feet there. Emotiva/Sherbourn have made amps with that specific application, but the XPR line of amps are not them. Granted, this is MY opinion. I also believe the engineering department at Emotiva is counting on science, ie; gravity, for the amps structural design.

The XPR series DOES run warm. Nothing to worry about. I've never had any problems mounting ANY amp vertically. Yes, the airflow is probably "better" with the thing set flat on a hard surface, but it shouldn't matter so far as I know...

If this is the case, then I believe Emotiva forgot to have vents and feet on the XPR's sides. Either way, I'd check with Emotiva tech support. Nothing like trapped hot air to cook one's solid state electronics.

I also believe the engineering department at Emotiva is counting on science, ie; gravity, for the amps structural design. As someone pointed out earlier, the vents are on the top of the unit to allow the heat to escape. Putting the unit on its side means the top no longer has those vents. Also, some heat generating parts inside the amp that previously released heat upward and outward through the vents may now be releasing heat into a neighboring part, causing more rapid deterioration. But as many have pointed out, call Emo and ask them. They'll tell you if amps were meant to fly, then..

Remember that this is a 1000 watt amp not a 100 watt amp. Large difference in heat at load.
