Hello My fellow Emotiva Family,
I'M moiving from a bestbuy system to a somewhat attempt at HIFI So far my Equipment is B&W 683 S2 towers, OPPO 103d for Blu Ray also using as a preamp powered by Emotiva's UPA 200. I figure my next step is to get a dedicated preamp, which leads me to my question. Is the XSP 1 my best option if so why? I
'm planning to add record player and a cheap av recevier to handle all the video last

Since you already have Emotiva, the XSP 1 is a good start, when you say best option, your best option depends on what you are willing to spend, because I could give you many options, but based off of your last statement about buying the cheap AV Receiver, I would assume you want to stay within a budget. Get the Emotiva XSP-1, you have 30 days to try it out.

The XSP-1 is a very niec option. Stay away from AV recievers. Another neat option is Emotiva's upcoming yet to be released preamp. It has DIRAC and I think similar in price to a UMC-1. I think it's mini XMC-1. It's what I would do in your sitaation.

If that's the case WAIT for the soon to be released preamp. It will trounce any AV reciever. Then spend the rest on a UPA-500 for surround sound.

Are you interested in 2 channel audio only or do you want or plan on going with a full surround setup in the near future?

I'm just learning now, actually i just started learning about all these option last week had no idea what a préamp or intergrated amp were.....

Preamp choices: Parasound Halo P5, Cambridge 851 D, Vincent Audio SA 31 MK, Vincent Audio SA31. I would start with the Emotiva first and go from there, you have a nice budget to start with and anything I just mentioned will fit in your budget, with the 30 day trial, you really don’t have anything to lose. An integrated amplifier combines the power amplifier and Pre-amplifier in the same case.
The power amplifier/preamplifier are separates and a Receiver has power amplifier, preamplifier and tuner built in and in the case of an AV Receiver it will be a Receiver that will have all of the things geared for Audio Visual Experience like HDMI/Component inputs and Surround Sound Prosessing Codecs DTS, DTS Master Audio etc. I would tell you this never be in a hurry to spend your money and do your diligence, Research Twice and spend once.
Everyone is suggesting the XSP-1 because of all of the features it provides and some people own it, I don’t, plus the five year warranty and 30 day trial. Check to see if their are local shops in your area as well and go in and listen. All of this will help you make a better decision, which is what we all want for you.

The xsp-1 is almost impossible to beat at that price point unless you go for the used market.

Would you be interested in a tube pre-amp? Which would work well with SS amplifiers and bring a whole new flavor to the table tubes4hifi

I'm affaid my brain won't be able to take any more! lol A tube pre-amp is different than a tube amplifier where you may have to adjust the bias daily. Basically a tube -pre is plug and play. The tubes have a good lifespan and to replace the tubes is no more difficult that screwing in a light bulb. No pressure here but IN THE LONG RUN I think it is worth it to review. I do understand if you feel overwhelmed b/c of the large amount of choices at your disposal but it is in your interest to take your time and make a decision that YOU are happy with and live with for some time. Enjoy the journey!
