Had an Idea to just get 5 of these lil amps to run a 5 channel setup.
Would this be overkill or would you just run three for the front three mains and pickup something smaller for the rears?

Eh....I with your XPA-7 I'm not sure you'll get a whole lot out of it. The front two channels are fully balanced, so I would stick with the XPA-7 and just add a pair of XPA-1 gen 2s akip rhw `L . The XPA-7 will use its humungous reserve power to drive the center and the surrounds.

IMO Overkill, I had 3 for my fronts and they belong more in a dedicated 2ch setup or at most the FL and FR speakers if you have something along the lines of an XMC-1 or XSP-1 in the chain, 5 would be a waste of money. What do you hope to achieve by adding additional amps? The XPA-1L amps are similar to the XPA-7 in most respects including similar power output. The XPA-1 amps are nice but are you going to NEED them? If you just want separates for the sake of separates I'd go for the 1L amps. If you want to do a lot of 2 channel listening, the 1 amps might be worth the extra cost.

I'll argue for doing it if you're wallet can take it, but be warned. It can be addictive.
I started my emo experience with an XPA-2 and an XPA-5, both gen 2, driven at first by an Anthem MRX 700 in a 7.1 configration, then later by an Onkyo Tx nr 3010 in an 11.1 configuration. The sound was excellent. After a few months, Emo had a sale so I thought I try the monoblock approach. I tried 3 XPA-1Ls up front (replacing the XPA-2 for RL and freeing one of XPA-5 channels for the center.
The improvement was quite noticable. The best way I can describe it was everything seemed more lively and nuanced the with monos compared to the multi-channel amps. The multi-channels were really great, but for me the jump to the 1Ls was a very noticable improvement. I eventually replaced the XPA 5 with 3 XPA-1s and added more XPA-1Ls to have 9 channels of emo monos.
Currently I only use a 7 channel setup in my Living room with an XMC-1. I moved the other 2 XPA-1Ls into my office and drive them with an emo Stealth CD-1 DAC.
The one thing I'd do over is stick with all XPA-1Ls instead of the bigger XPA-1s. The bigger iron isn't needed in my LR since I'm usng Golden Ear towers with built in powered subs. The XPA-1s have a nice series of LEDs showing power output. I rarerly even see the 1st one light up. Occassionally, I might see up to a dim 3rd LED on a big drum hit during loud (I mean really loud) fusion or rock. Rarely with movies or jazz.

I went from a nice 7 channel ATI AT2007 amp made in California that "should" have never clipped with my "efficient" speakers to 3 XPR-1's. I noticed on multiple tracks clarity at peaks where I thought before it was the recording that had harshness during these transients. Makes me think the 100lb ATI amp's power supply would sag during these crazy transients on dynamic tracks. If you listen above 85dBA RMS and have speakers with 3 woofers (e.g. large swings in impedance), I would go with the monoblock. My speakers are rated for 4 ohms nominal impedance, but drop to 2 ohms at some low frequencies, but they are made by Klipsch and supposed to be efficient. I heard a reliable difference 100% of the time at these peaks. I'll argue for doing it if you're wallet can take it, but be warned. It can be addictive. My opinion is Overkill!!! But this is coming from someone that has an XPR-2 for the fronts and an XPR-5 for the center/side/back surrounds, not to mention these XPR's powering Klipsch Legends and Reference speakers.

Wow! How loud do you have them to cause the speakers to distort? I have never had that happen, but usually buy the bigger Klipsch speakers and listen under 100dBA. Used to have RF-83's and they couldn't get enough power. Running Palladium P-39f's I bought off ebay. Really power hungry speakers too. I'm sure the legends were very efficient; great speakers from what I've read. My opinion is Overkill!!! Okay what do you get? Isolation. No shared anything. No Crosstalk, the ultimate yes from the previous nos'. All reference systems run mono blocks. There is a reason. I tell everyone if you have a chance to go mono blocks, only good can come from it. Our mono block society here will vouch for my assertion I am sure.

I have 7 XPA-1L's in my home theater and an XPA-5 for when the XMR-1 with Atmos is released. I could not be happier as the setup sounds outstanding. They are driving all Axiom speakers M80, VP180, and 4 Qs-8's and 2 SVS Pb-12 Plus subs to finish it off. Very clean power and wows me every time I listen,

I think he's saying the the XMC-1 front two channels are balanced and that you should get a set of big XPA-1 MONOBLOCKS to drive those two channels, using the XPA-7 to drive everything else. Yep! Thats what I'd do!!!

No sorry for my garbled post. Your XMC-1 front stereo channels are fully balanced. I would use an XPA-1 gen 2 instead of XPA-1 L. Then leave the XPA-7 to take care of the center and the surrounds. You should have HUGE amounts of power. Edit: Oh looks like my good friend novisnick helped me out there!
