Does the XMC-1 have the processing power to pull off this fantasy upgrade? I think not, and that's the show-stopper.
Hate to throw a wet blanket over the festivities, but it is what it is.
Cheers!

T- Which of these upgrades will the processor not allow, for instance I would like to see Dirac unison? Atmos is definitely out. Needs more horsepower. Unison may be a non-starter too. Emo would be able to say for sure either way. Cheers! T- PS: To elaborate on my Atmos comment: There has been some talk about a scaled-down 5.1.2 implementation being possible. Whether or not that would be doable is irrelevant to me. In my mind, that's a kluge, not a full Atmos implementation. The minimum acceptable Atmos configuration for me would be 7.2.4. Besides, the XMC-1 would be straining and probably sluggish to respond when trying to provide even a 5.1.2 Atmos. T-

The NYC audio club to which I belong, and the other NYC audio club were invited to the flagship Harman International store in Manhattan for a day of events. In addition to other activities during the day, we were treated to a HT demo, 2-channel vinyl listening and a two hour visual and audio presentation by Tom Fine, son of Robert and Wilma Fine of Mercury Living Presence fame. The day was a blast, in particular the HT demonstration.
The 9.4 channel setup was all JBL, and no, it was not Atmos. Three JBL K2s up front, and two each JBL speakers (model ?) left and right side, and one each JBL speaker left and right rear. All augmented by four extremely large JBL subs. Electronics were all JBL Synthesis with 10,000 watts on tap!!! An Oppo played several scenes of four Bluray discs. Jurassic World, Star Wars the Force Awakens, and two music videos. The sound as you might guess was incredible!
Harman is in the HT installation business starting at 20K (including 6K for the initial consult) going all the way up to 1.5 million or so. I asked the presenter, the store manager, if Atmos or such was in their future. He said that they were "playing a waiting game to see how it pans out".
So even though Bonzo doesn't give a "jack sh**" about my opinion of Atmos (DOA), maybe he'll trust the response of a senior member of a major international company.

Uh, you guys (naysayers) may want to check the News & Updates forum. Dan Laufman announced that they have found a way to implement 5.2.4 or 7.2.2 in the XMC-1.

Still not working for me, and still remains to be seen/experienced. To reiterate my position regarding Atmos, the minimum acceptable configuration for me would be 7.2.4.

You better do more searching, Dan said there putting in the new texas instruments chips so yes 7.2.2 or 5.2.4 no problem with "horsepower" with the new chips. Geez!

Looks like we are in fact now getting the XMC-2 folks, with full 7.2.4 capability. It will be called the XMC-1 Gen 3. Hopefully this thread helped make that decision for Emotiva. I know I'm happy about it. Thanks to everyone for participating.

The 'XMC-2' was invented for this thread to gauge the interest in a model like the XMC-1, but with additional features and capabilities. The so called XMC-1 Gen 3 is the most 'advanced' processor that currently has a timeline.

If you're not in a bind for money, I'd hold on to the card and do as you suggest. It would be interesting Nick to track over time the avg value of cards sold with corresponding upgrade announcements ; the price just shot up again for 7.2.4 I suspect

Why not wait till the XMC-1 Gen 3 comes out and use your 40% upgrade card then. The projected cost of the XMC-1 Gen 3 is $3000 so the card would save you $1200. Not a bad deal to get the XMC-1 Gen 3 for $1800. I'm holding onto my card for sure.

here's the thing...i'm a 3.1 guy...if i buy the Bad A** XMC-1 Gen 3 just to run a 3.1....the HT Gods will cast down all kinds of bad JuJu on me! lmao! a XMC-1 Gen 3 for $1800 sounds great, but that's still $1800 i would have to spend! i would be stoked if i could trade my 40% off card for a MC-700!
