Friends, last year my home was burglarized by the Son of one of my neighbors. The poor man was a Sheriff's deputy, his wife left him, his Son acted out, he was involved in an on duty car crash (he was at fault), subsequently resigned his job and quietly moved away. During the burglary, his boy and his gangster buddies busted up my house quite a bit. One of the things damaged was my beloved Panasonic plasma display.
We have been awaiting an apt come from the courts to determine how to progress on a few fronts. My insurance adjustor had me waiting to get a new television. I called the insurance company yesterday and found that my adjustor was no longer in their employ. The supervisor to whom I was referred, informed me that in order to receive the replacement cost rather than the depreciated "cash value", I need to purchase a new television by tomorrow (Friday).
I have ran up to a Best Buy Magnolia to see what was available. They had a demo Samsung 855U ? Curved display for $7,500. I asked about the new Vizio P series. He said " Vizio is garbage, built from spare parts. I am appalled that BB is forcing us to have them in our store." I think he was wrong about the new P series, but...
I called another Magnolia today and spoke with a decent guy:
He suggested the newest Sony 75" XBR 75X850D - delivered/set up and eventually calibrated for $3,857 that is $3,500 retail. They have it in 85" for $8,000
The Vizio P is $3,800 retail- I didn't get the delivered/ set up price, as he felt the new Sony was a better looking display.
I would really prefer an 85" version, but the jump in price from +/- $3,500 to +/- $8,000 seems like too much of a change.
WHAT DO YOU THINK?
I have to pick something out and have a receipt before tomorrow ends. Any other suggestions? I really can't argue the merits of salespeople or theory today.
Just which set and why.
As always, I really value my forum friends and their wealth of knowledge.
Please and thank you. -Dark

Talk about the 12th hour, not sure I'm the man to answer any of your question but hey, I'll take a stab. Never been a Sony fan, but this particular panel seems Sweet at its price point. I hear nothing but great this about Vizio, especially the P series. What a bad rap for your poor neighbor, hope the kids see the error of his ways. Also glad the story did end on you stealing your neighbor's wife heart, ? I Kidd. Dan

I bought a 50" Samsung recently. I've been very impressed by the picture quality... and the performance seems to be rock solid. Friends, last year my home was burglarized by the Son of one of my neighbors. Just a reminder, the P series Visio has no tuner! Antenna won't do a thing for you!

I just spoke with Cleveland Plasma. He said:
Hands down best 65" is the LG65EF9500 @$3,300 it is an OLED and supposedly looks "better" than my Panny Plasma. But only 65 inch
He can do the Sony XBR 75X850D for $3,350 delivered or the 85 inch one for $7,000
He also offered me an LG 84 inch G Vision monitor for $3,500. I don't know anything about it, it is a monitor only
He said that the Sonys are not as good looking as the plasma I have.
No real, clear path yet.

Oled is nice and I had that tv for 2 weeks before returning it due to motion issues and defects in the blacks called vinetting.. youll see that on each side of the screen if you watch TV in a dark room.. very noticable if you test black levels at 1-20%. Basicly black shadowing darker then the rest of the blacks.. you'll notice it on dark scenes.. easy in a space scene. For that kind of money it better be perfect. I returned it and grabbed a Sony 940c 75" flad screen. Has large speakers on the sides that many don't like but I don't care. Great 4k large tv at 5k.. discounted and was a 7-8k tv when it first hit. Anyways now there's a new Sony 75" 940d model out and I can't believe he didn't mention it. Same FALD screen without the side speakers. 7k I believe retail. Also newer oled out from lg but your be stuck at 65" unless you want to spend 20k for larger hehe. You won't miss the plasma after seeing the sony 75"!! Those larger then 75" models he's telling you about are old tech. You want a ultra hd 4k tv so you can use the new bluray formats! Only 2 I know of that are certified are the newer sony and lg tvs. You will thank me once you understand the new hd format uhd.newer hdmi 2.0 connections! That's what you need to make sure the tv has or you've wasted your money.. sure you can stream on some tvs but you won't be able to view the new 4k uhd blu rays without it. When you go to play the new format the tv will recognise thr disk and change the settings for picture so you will be able to view the movie correctly. Btw.. I have a 82" dlp now in the basement before. So the 65" was too small to us after having a large screen. 75 was just fine.

Get your tv warranty from m.squaretrade.com/m/home as well.. if the cost is crazy high where ever you buy it. If you have a costco membership it will be much cheaper as well.. even if you don't buy it from costco.

Two different servicemen told me to stay away from the LG sets. They say nothing but service problems with them.
If you are going to settle with anything near your 65 inch, your Panasonic you have now is probably pretty competitive. Obviously not 4k but probably just as nice of a picture with only 1080P. I have compared mine to the new lines at the local Magnolia and I see no reason to upgrade. Heck, even the latest Sound and Vision review of a new 4K set said he does not see huge improvement by jumping to 4k sets from the Panasonic and Pioneer plasma sets from recent years.
Too bad the new line of Panasonic OLED sets are behind schedule, I would like to see what they come out with.

I so hope my last of the line Panasonic plasma holds out for years. It still impresses me daily.

I made the mistake of looking into tvs 2 months ago after catching wind of the new 4k blu ray format coming out and couldn't shake it. Stayed away from 4k sets till I felt it was safe enough time when it matured enough to jump in.. picked a good time to dive in but would not of been a bad idea to wait another year or 2. I thought the format was settled and here there's new format wars still going on with ultra hd blue rays and dolby vision on the horizon for home use... then the streaming uhd format which I really don't care about as physical disks will hold alot more information atm and way less compression. People also say to really see a difference with 4k you need to sit closer to the tv and would want a larger then 65" screen to see the finer detail. The new ultra hd format is even more impressive with brighter lighting and deeper blacks so colors really pop.

Sorry to hear about this Darksky, and your poor Panny! That statement from the insurance company person sounds spurious to me, because if you get something other than a plasma (no longer available as we all sadly know), they'll just say its not equivalent to what you had and deny an equivalent price/reimbursement anyway. Given that, I'd go with the 65" OLED 4K, and get the LG (despite the other member's reservations). If you watch from even a little bit off-center (as I often do), then you'll want to avoid LCDs/LEDs sets like the plague. I'll jump into the 4K OLED market once a 75" version becomes available for under $5,000, and hope MY beloved Panny plasma holds out until then!

I a darkened room, picture quality of OLED really *kills* both plasma and LED LCD. (Even, though neither tech is without flaws).

Lg Ef9500 65" And the sony 940c 75" I'll take the extra 10 inches for the same price.. thanks. It's not a back lit lcd with bad viewing angles.. it's a flad! And she's awesome! Newer Sony 940d don't have the side speakers though they don't bother me. Attachments:

Also I'll add that I've spent months reading on the lg oled and sony tvs on avsforums..
Lg had lots of picture issues with vinetting.. people called it the tv lotto! What would you get.A good enough screen or a crappy screen? Lots were returning them and some contacted lg and got refunds issued and some were allowed to exchange the set when a newer revision came out to attempt to get a good set.
Sure we loved mine and held on to it for a few weeks debating to exchange it and play the tv lg lotto or get something different.. the next best set was the sony 940c. 0 issues with it and am happy.
If the lg is all the guy can afford go for it and make sure to check there return policy first!

Buy whichever one is closest to what you had before. The retailer will give you 15-30 days to exchange it for something else anyway and the insurance company won't care what you do with it after the claim is closed. Don't be forced into making a bad decision because of someone else's timetable.
