B&W

I for one could usually listen to the flat setting, almost always HATED the bell curve, and usually (almost always) preferred some form of the "U" / "V" curve. It's my guess that people who like B&W speakers used to have their non-audiphile EQ systems set to either flat or the bell curve. And hence, why I'm not a big fan of B&W speakers (or Paradigm or Klipsch for that matter). And hence why people who like those speakers aren't big fans of DT or GE, which have more of a "U" curve sound. It's just my theory anyway. I think the main reason those EQs were set like that was due to the plastic cube speakers or tiny car speakers that couldn't produce adequate base or treble without distorting. Basically the only way to get any loud sound out of them was to pump up the mids. We were playing cassettes, too, in that era so it wasn't like we had a whole lot of wriggle room. Most of the popular music of that time period lent itself to mid-range, too. It may be true that speaker manufacturers are responding to people growing up listening to music under those conditions, but I think the explanation is more accurately explained as pragmatic than aesthetic. In any case, I haven't had the need, time, or resources to replace the speakers I've been using for about ten years: X-SX and X-CS and a couple of the 8" subs AV123 sold back then. I believe my particular color, glossy cherry wood, were some of the first runs and limited edition of only a few hundred were made if I remember correctly.

Ascend Acoustics everything for home theater, after having researched speakers since I was about 15. Sierra Tower fronts, Sierra Horizon center, Sierra 2 rears (all with RAAL tweeter). Subwoofers: Rythmik F25s (not Ascend brand, but sold through them).
Airmotiv 6s for my desktop PC Airmotiv 3b's received just yesterday for laptop, but they refuse to pair (Bluetooth) with anything .

Started off around 1982 with a Yamaha Natural Sound system which included a doodad called a CD Player. I was the first of my group to purchase CD's. Hilarious. Came with a double tape deck and turntable that saw zero use. Sold it to a buddy in 1990-91 went I went to Desert Storm for pennies on the dollar and he got about 5 more years out of it! Enjoyed some JBL 4312B monitors w/Harmon Kardon gear for a few years and then progressed to Mirage from a local B&M store that eventually passed into into the spirit world. Found Emotiva and have rocked the ERT 8.3's for several years now. Grew impatient for an upgrade and pulled the trigger on a pair of Tekton Double Impacts and a center last month. I'll let you know my thoughts when they break in.....

Poorly constructed survey if fully 31% of respondents click on 'other'.
FWIW, I've been a Magnepan owner for 30+ years.
Each speaker has its OWN Parasound A23 of about 200x2. The 'plan' is to replace the speaker crossover with direct connection to the amp and acquire a LINE LEVEL crossover to be inserted between amp and preamp. I'll start by 'mimicking' the stock crossover but may experiment later. Maggies generally do NOT like the currently in-vogue 24db/octave stuff for some reason.

Currently KEF - 107's and 103.2's (just sold LS50's) - the 107's are in my "main" system...powered by Emotiva! XDA-2 DAC and UPA-200 amp. Had a USP-1 preamp until recently, replaced by Juicy Music Blueberry xTreme w/Cream, tube preamp. and Quad ESL 57's - also powered by Emotiva! Until recently. Trying out a Monarchy SM 70 now with the Quads. Actually the "Emotiva" power was a Sherbourn PA 2-50 little desktop amp. The Quads don't need a ton of power, so it was perfect. Only had the Monarchy a day. Think it might be better, but so far it's not a HUGE difference, which I think speaks highly of the Sherbourn, since the Monarchy is supposed to be one of the better amp pairs with the Quads...and it costs 4 times as much as the Sherbourn. And the Sherbourn has a lot more "features!"

Ascend Acoustics 340s & 170s. Looking at their towers or their Sierra 2 bookshelves. Very happy with what I have at this time. Have had many other brands and I like these as much as anything I have ever owned.

My front "wall" consists of Power Sound Audio MTM210T towers, an MTM210c center, and dual S1500 subs. These are outstanding sounding speakers. My surrounds are Polks. I will be replacing the surround set with PSA MTM110SRs in the coming year as toy funds allow.

'Other' is now up to over 32% and calls into question this whole survey.

Yeah, I have read testimonials that the Bose Wave Radio ($500) and its speakers sound better than speakers costing five times as much ($2500) and I don't see it on the list.

KEF makes their own drivers. And has a HUGE internal engineering group for all the design and listening tests which are part of the process. The LS50 are REALLY highly regarded and would make a great personal system or small room system. Sign me up. The 'BLADE' model is very highlly regarded. www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbaDe0vUfc4Blade II vs LS50

No Focal? No Magnepan? No Dynaudio or SEAS? But the list does have Bose, All of which sound so different from one another that I have trouble finding their sonic virtue. I realize it is a Marketing Driven List.

Somebody who didn't know any better would say, 'WOW, I gotta get me some of 'dem Others. After all, almost 1/3 of Emotiva Forum members own 'em. The numbers show only about 2/3 of respondents own a named speaker. Not good enough. Get the 'other' category to 10% or Less and I'll buy. And you'll see how little consensus there IS in hi-fi speakerdom. A BETTER question might be, 'Would you buy speakers from the Same Manufacturer again?'

I selected multiple. Chances are many people picked a brand or two AND other. It doesn't mean that only 2/3rds of respondents own a named speaker. I don't think that lack of consensus (or a very very saturated market) are really anything new. "Hi-fi" has unfortunately always been extremely subjective from person to person. Triad makes Triad speakers.... much more targeted for the custom installer market. LOL. I just realized the OP was "Rory" .. now the purpose of the thread is crystal clear. I get it now.
