I asked on here last week about that new sub. I also asked Eric about it, the designer. He said it has two 8 inch drivers on the bottom and a singer 18 inch driver on top powered by a 1600 watt amp built in. Now back in my car audio days I had 7 10 inch drivers and eight 8 inch drivers in the back of a GMC Jimmy made a wall. Anyway the 10 inch drivers cancelled out the 8 inch drivers so in Eric's new design wouldn't the 18 inch driver cancel out the two eights?

For example: the plucked and resonating low ‘e’ note (41Hz) on a Fender Jazz bass guitar has a moving mass of 19 grams. The highest reviewed and well-regarded subwoofers of today have cones with an average of 200-300 grams of moving mass to reproduce the same low ‘e’ tone. This is the equivalent of a Formula One team showing up on race day with a special new race car that has 15,000 pounds of sand added to it! Our competitors are building subwoofers in this exact way today. A subwoofer with 300 grams of moving mass can only give you a dulled out response down to 15Hz. The laws of physics prove the subwoofer cannot be musical nor can it even begin to produce the harmonic spectra of a Fender Jazz bass guitar (or any other bass-producing musical instrument) – period.
So, when you pluck a Fender Jazz bass' E, how do you hear it? Last time I played my Yamaha or Ibanez bass guitars without amplification I doubt anyone but me would have heard it in a dead quiet room. Put me with a group or even solo in a coffee shop and even I wouldn't be able to hear it. I've played Fender Jazz basses and they're no different in that regard, so it's nothing special to Fenders. The point is that, while nothing in the quote is necessarily wrong, the music played (by the musician), recorded (by the sound engineer), and played back (on the studio speakers) doesn't use this technology. Therefore, if there was any difference in the sound quality, it would not be what was played, recorded, or intended by the musician or the recording engineer; which is not what an audiophile looks for in their sound reproduction.
My guess is that it won't sound terribly different than other subs of this quality. But the marketing will make you think differently.

Isn't the point about oscillating mass that one is using inertia to continue to move (you pluck, it vibrates) and the other uses electricity? A speaker cone may well be heavier, but electricity is producing the vibration - it doesn't send a single pulse and let mass do the rest. For the duration of the tone, electricity is moving the mass - i.e in control. Providing you have the 'grip' on the driver, the speed and rate of change can be matched. Now one is a very different shape to the other and connected to a very different air cavity I'll grant you. However I don't buy the weight difference because you're comparing apples and coconuts, let alone oranges IMHO.

The Tekton brilliance are awesome, I love them. I love them so much so I am debating on selling my PSA Triax 8000 watt triple 15" sub to get the new Tekton sub painted the same ford gt 40 dark blue metallic as are my brilliance. I would love to keep the same line and have the color match but to get rid of a proven limited epic sub for the unknown scares me especially since to me I would think the 18" driver would cancel out the two 8" driver's in Tektons new 1600 watt sub.

I am pretty sure you won't noticed much difference if either subwoofer is properly set.

The 8 inch probably won't cancel the 18. That's probably the first thing he thought about. However....what are you nuts?!? You got a PSA Triax. If anything go for a second subwoofer to get stereo subs. But don't sell off the PSA! It puts out ungodly amounts of power.

You probably had one set of drivers wired out of phase for cancellation to occur in the same plane.
Re the Tekton sub, I would worry about the horrendous group delays that is likely to occur given that he has a port for each driver. This can be minimized to a certain extent if he has each driver in a separate acoustically sealed chamber along with a steep crossover to separate the frequency bandwidth between the 8s and the 18. Even with that, it would be difficult to band limit within the already narrow bandwidth of a subwoofer.
I would ask for design details along with a frequency plot for the sub before you decide to buy. If my assumption above is correct then the massive group delays and related distortion will also make this sub difficult to integrate within your system.
EDIT: Time alignment between the 8s and the 18 might also cause combing.

Have you heard anything about the Double Impact?
I like the brilliance much better than the double impact! The cheaper pendragons are louder than the double impact. That being said my buddy who has the double impacts wants to sell them already! I love the brilliance though!

I have given my review of the brillance on this site and also Eric posted it to his testimonial page. Bottom line is they are the best sounding speaker I have heard period! I won't comment anymore on the double impact as I don't want to talk negative about them. We just don't like them. They just don't sound right! I would save some money and go with the pendragons for a large room. Small to medium size room wow are the brillance awesome!

Audiophill....interesting. More than a few guys who know their stuff are all over the DI's. Wonder if it was the room or electronics or something that had them sounding wrong. I don't doubt your ears...

Jdubs, cuz you never know - I say get what you want. Talk with Eric, but if room can support the DI's and you want them? I say do it. There's never telling, not when it comes down to it, how it's going to sound when it's your room, with your electronics, your music, and your taste.
Pens are probably a safe bet, but sometimes you don't want a safe bet. Lol.
Just be sure you keep the boxes for a while. You don't like them, lose a few bucks in shipping - it's ok.
Treat yourself fully. Gas is $80 a tank. $300-400 loss in shipping you won't miss in 6 months, to have what works best, is worth it, dude.
Especially since AudioPhill didn't site something specific. It wasn't, "The lows sucked," or, "Imaging was all over the place." It was a something that wasn't right. Could be the speakers, but could be room...
You don't like them, lose a few bucks in shipping - it's ok.
