I am considering purchasing a new XPA-5 Gen 3 amp. I am very happy with my Gen-1, it is mostly used for 2 channel playback. I would like to have some input from other users who have done a similar upgrade. Is there a noticeable improvement in sound quality?

This is going to be tough sledding for you as there really hasn't been anyone here who has either G1 or G2 and gone to G3. The few G3 owners that have posted here are basically first time buyers.

I have the same question. Doesn't look like anybody at AVS has bumped up to Gen 3 either - all first timers who have been happy with their purchase.

First time buyers are what I was seeing also, just hoping that someone had done this type of update and could share their opinion. As I previously said, I am very happy with my G1, built like a tank, have plenty of power and sounds wonderful. With the G3 amps based on the XPR designs I can assume there may be some improvement but I don't normally purchase something on an assumption.

This thread by flatpicker has him saying he enjoys it more than his Gen2 XPA-2 and SA-250 but of course I would have to say we would all have a different outcome, only way to know would be to grab one and send it back as long as you are within the 30 days. emotivalounge.proboards.com/thread/48615/gen-3-arrived-todayChad

For stereo use I believe you would get better value out of adding a pair of mono blocks and keeping the the XPA-5 for movies. After much deliberation that's the path I chose and it has given every bit of the result I expected. The 2 spare channels freed up on the XPA-5 are now used for Zone 2, so not wasted. Eventually I suspect that they will end up powering the ceiling speakers in a 5.1.2 Atmos/DTSX set up. Cheers Gary

Gary, I like your suggestion. I have the XPA-1L's which I love and have wanted a pair of the XPA-1's, with the current sale I can get them for a little more than a XPA-5 G3. Great Idea!!!

Well the new XPA-1 amplifiers arrived today. These things are a beast to handle, the boxes need a warning on them about their weight. Got them installed and they powered right up and sound great! I need to rerun Dirac when I have a little time. Attachment Deleted
