What commercially-available subs are capable of strong (anechoic) output at 15 Hz. (or lower) with minimal distortion or doubling?
The historic criteria for subwoofer design are: Low FR - Less Power - Compact Dimensions - Pick any two...
Of the three, I'm willing to give up compact dimensions to get the frequency response. Since my better half doesn't like subsonic effects, my game plan is to run the main speakers "bare" when she's home & engage the subs only for "man-cave" listening sessions.
I once had a Definitive Technology Trinity - Wish I still had it...
The least expensive way to get what I seek is to DIY - But I don't have the time or inclination. Assuming that I want a pair of subs at about $1K each (or at least in that ballpark), what's available?
Now it goes without saying that sub manufacturers have a LOT of incentive to lie about their subwoofer's specs, so any company that publishes actual anechoic curves for their subs (and more so if those specs have been independently verified) is a company I'd consider. Having a spec sheet saying that their 1-cubic-foot (wonder) sub with a vented 8" driver goes down to 9 Hz. (without specifying the amplitude or the percent distortion) is not on my radar.
I'd also prefer a self-amplified sub with a built-in low-pass crossover. All the better if the sub has LF equalization built in. My room hasn't fared well with "room correction" software, so I'm not too keen on paying for that. I can use electronic crossover if needed (either the built-in Oppo crossover or an external RANE "pro" crossover unit). But I'm currently getting excellent results running my main speakers full-range and blending in the subs with their own plate crossovers set to about 50 Hz.
Suggestions?
Thanks - Boom
