Hi Mark I'm also interested in the Holo audio spring DAC. I've already purchased but have not yet received my yiggy. It's been a month and still no shipping confirmation. So, what is your plan? Wait for a yggy or get the Holo? Mark

I would suggest you also look at MHDT Labs. their DACs are very nice and the most musical I have heard I really love their sound. I own two, first the MHDT Havana and just recently I bought an MHDT Balanced Stockhholm. I still own and love both. These are NOS (non oversampling) tube DACs my experience with them is one of the best musical changes I've made in my system. The best I remember of vinyl and the best of digital combined and the best music my system has ever made. I have played with a few different tubes and found nice favorite which is the vintage Western Electric JW 2C51 396A, it's fun to play wit a little tube rolling tough the original tubes sound very nice as well. I have considered both the Schiit Gungnir Multibit and the Schiit Yggdrasil I have not heard them but I do hope to sometime, I am not too far from the new Schiit retail store . But with lots of research I think the MHDT are probably a better more musical fit in my system and speakers. I think Schitt are more analytical and less musical from my research. The MHDT have exceptional detail yet are so musical not analytical at all, very musical and the most realistic voices and instruments as well, the MHDT adds a warmth yet the most detailed sound to my system. Here are pics of an MHDT Balanced Stockholm. Sounds very interesting...I would love to hear one. Have you had to use customer service yet in any way? What was it like? Mark Yes their customer service is top notch, Jiun is one of the owners and I have dealt with him and he took very good care of me. They also have a great reputation on the head-fi.org forum where their customer service has an extremely good reputation as well as their DACs. Personally I absolutely love the sound of their DACs.

Mark, take a very serious look at the Grace m920.
All American, Stereophile class A or A+, very flexible, heavily discounted when offered often on Massdrop.
Not a toy, used in many recording studios.

You won't like my advice, Mark, but I'll throw it out anyway - Go with an MQA DAC. No, I haven't yet heard one, but I've not seen any other DAC technology generate that much audiophile interest.

Seems to me that everyone has a favorite DAC and almost everyone says a different one. I look for these trends in discussions to get a big picture. There are the R2R ladder DACs that are talked about like fine wines. There are the sensible Delta DACs like the Grace m920 that audiobill talks of. This discussion could go on forever in the current environment. I could tell everyone about this amazing DAC I read about and how it will rock your world. DYohn builds systems for a very good living and has very excellent supporting gear to squeeze out that performance that a better design will provide. KeithL says it is down to how it is done. He is the smartest dude I have ever seen online. If you have the money and you love your hobby and you got good gear then do your research klinemj and buy what you want. If it don't work then there is always the next one. You work hard and you earn your money and you reap the rewards of finding and building your system to your likes. There will always be those that disagree with choice and that is healthy.

Seems to me that everyone has a favorite DAC and almost everyone says a different one. Quite true...and in today's world, there are SO many options in every product that I find it nearly impossible to know what to even begin to consider. It's almost like the number of possibilities looks like a giant haystack, with every piece of hay possibly having value, possibly being rotten, possibly being poison, or possibly being just like any other piece of hay out there. And...the price of a little piece of hay can range from practically nothing to "ludicrous price"! My approach is to ask around, research the options I didn't know about, listen to what I can, and decide from there. I have been following up on the Chord 2Qute and their options like "HUGO" and "DAVE" (yes, there's a DAC named DAVE. According to the MFGer, "DAVE stands for ‘Digital to Analogue Veritas in Extremis’, a moniker that best reflects the product’s capability; a device so advanced and with so few compromises, that it is absolutely truthful in the extreme — a standard that all other DACs on the market simply cannot hope to match." Isn't that just "too cute"? Well, something needs to give me a giggle when I see a DAC someone wants to sell for $16,000 - including the special $2500 stand that is optional.) I've been trying to get Chord's support to help me understand what's technically different in sound between the DAVE and the $1300 2Qute, and I am not getting any useful information ("DAVE is the deepest, most accurate 3D sound and then going down from there" referring to DAVE's sound quality vs. Chord's other options). The sad reality is that, even if the 2Qute sounded better than a DragonFarts 5000, I'd pay twice the price for a DragonFarts 5000 to not have to say I owned a piece of stereo gear that was "2Qute". Now, "DAVE" at a fair price...oh heck yeah..."Dude, I got a new DAVE!!!" Can you imagine how awesome that would be to say? Mark

The Chord information lives here: www.head-fi.org/I have been following Chord since they showed up. If I won One hundred fifty million on Mega Millions I would be calling Chord directly to build me a custom Dave and I would complete it with all the other Chord gear and MBL best speakers that hemster talks about. Of course this would be my little system.

markSo I was out at the local watering hole with some friends last night. One of those friends is an audio guy and really wants to buy the new Schiit Vidar amp (not available) and a Freya. So group is talking about going to LA for Nationals Karate Tournament and the Audio guy is going with his daughter. I pipe up, "You can go to the new Schiit store while you are there." The looks from everyone else (including my wife at the table) were priceless.

Not that I have a Chord DAC but I did addition a Chord Mojo with top notch head phones and it did sound really impressive. Their bigger siblings do get extremely good measurements in Stereophile reviews and most if not all reviews are really raving about their sound. So unless you really require balanced outputs, the Chord 2Qute, Hugo and possibly Hugo TT are worth to consider. Another DAC to consider is the Pro-ject DAC Box RS, which is an awesome DAC and at a very decent price. It has Burr Brown DACs and IMHO, it sounds very smooth without losing details. It has selectable solid state or tube output stages if that is of interest. The specs are not that impressive with a merely 100 dB SNR but from measurements in tests that is for the tube output stage, where the SS output stage has an impressive SNR of 120 dB! Not that specs alone says much but as mentioned it sounds very nice. Finally, I have had and still have Mytek DACs and while the Manhattan (II) might be to pricey, the Brooklyn is a very good DAC too. Having said that, the XMC-1 built-in DAC is no slouch, then again you already know this.

By the way, is the only finish that's available for the Schiit Yggdrasil silver? That's all that's currently shown now, but of course it's also noted as being Out-Of-Stock till April 21st.

Have to call and specifically request a black yggy. There will be an extra wait time, but I believe it costs the same.
