Define "more". Some manufacturer in China might put 1000 man years in research, some other manufacturer 2 man years and the result is the same. It's the result that matters. Wait a minute. Are you counting the time that it takes to get ready to work and all the breaks that you have to take. What about the time spent cleaning up after. Do they have a anechoic chamber and Dr. dude ? You have to have a Dr. dude to get good results. Remember Matthew Polk ads from the 80's? The lab coat meant he was smart, like a Dr Dude... I think Lonnie wears a lab coat around the office. Or a bath robe.

He was showcasing some of his speakers to a group of audiophiles. Nice guy.

I am expanding my search in of reasonable priced speakers. I noticed a pair of Focal speakers on Accessories 4 Less price at $900 for a pair. I have seen their high end speakers at local Audio Shows, but have not heard anyone on the Forum that has them. Any thoughts on the Focal Chorus 726 v2 ? Thanks, Matt

Do you measure it by money spent, or how many hours engineers etc. are using to do the research. Or how many audio related patents a company has. In general I was interested in knowing how you came to the conclusion that Revel was somehow special when it comes to audio research. I don't think it's an easy thing to measure.

Just to clarify, when I mentioned the Paul Carmody design (like Rory) I was suggesting that they are very good and would take a lot of beating. Finding better quality in a replacement speaker at your budget of ~$850 would be extremely difficult. My suggestion of adding the sub was 3 fold, not just to add some of the missing lower frequencies but to take away the need for the modest output power amp to attempt to drive the Core 2's down to those frequencies and for the 7" mid woofer to try and perform at frequencies it's not designed to handle. My view is that you will get better performance out of both the Primaluna Prologue One and Core 2s whilst adding some currently missing bass. In simple terms, the main speakers would sound better. If you just replaced the main speakers (without a sub woofer) those benefits would not be there. If you want to test it out, there are a number of cheap (under $50) high/low pass filters that handle speaker levels. Try you local car audio outlet, they are quite common in that application. Cheers Gary I have decided to add the sub first to the office system and see how that changes my sound. I have googled high/low pass filters for car stereo and don't come up with anything that seems what I am looking for. Can you give me a link ? Thanks for all the good info !

Just a short update on my new speaker quest. I decided to go for the moment with a sub in the office system. I bought a Polk PSW-505 12 inch sub that was slightly damaged in the cabinet for $150 from Amazon Warehouse deals. It has speaker high inputs that I need for my Primaluna tube integrated amp that does not have a sub output. The Polk is a pretty good sounding sub, but it is a little to much bass for the smaller office space. I will move my 10 inch sub I have in the family room to the office system and put the Polk downstairs in the next couple of weeks. I am in the process of moving the family room system/TV to the wall above the fireplace and built in entertainment cabinet. I like the improved sound the office system with the sub, but I am still thinking of upgrading the speakers. I will be going to the LA Audio Show first weekend of June and will audition the Emotiva T1 and T2's, the Tekton's (hopefully the Lore Reference or what ever speaker he brings to the show). I am still looking at two DIY speaker kits. One is Paul Carmody's Carrera a bookshelf speaker, and Jeff Bagby's the Solstice a tower speaker. Both would run about $1000 a pair to build. I could also up grade my DIY Core 2's with my engineering friend doing the crossover using Scan Speak Revelators as the midwoofer drivers. That would run about $600 for the pair. Will update again after the LA. Audio Show. Matt

I have heard both the Debut series and the ones above them (I forget the name ) with the unified tweeter and mid range. Very nice speakers, but they are not much if any better than what I have now. So it would be a lateral move and I want to have a large improvement in SQ. I know that I am asking a lot of a speaker at the $850-$1000 range to do that, but I am looking for something that I just get blown away with the SQ. I might be asking to much for a speaker in this price range to hit that mark. I will know more after the LA Audio show. Thanks for your input. Matt

Matt, have you ever heard the Klipsch KLF series speakers? You can pick them up in excellent condition in your price range and I am confident they will be everything you are wanting and more....and you won't need a sub! 102 pounds and 102 db sensitivity and 800 watt power handling means you can use a flea watt amp or a mega amp. Specs: www.cnet.com/products/klipsch-legend-series-klf-30-speakers/specs/You're welcome! Tim

I don't know if you're up to assembling and finishing speaker cabinets, but I've been interested for some time in building a pair of Parts Express Tritrix speakers. They are an MTM two way TL (Transmission Line) speaker. The magic is in the cabinets and a pair of woofers that can take advantage of the prodigious bass available inside those cabinets. Assembly is a simple screw and glue operation. You mentioned in your first post that cosmetics are secondary to function. You'd need to finish them since they are pressboard and butt-ugly. Primer and paint and they'd look pretty good. My song towers are a TL design. The bass response is amazing, and especially so since they use a pair of 5" woofers to produce all that bass. The Tritrix woofers are the same size but I'd be pretty sure they aren't in the same class as the Salk speakers. I'm thinking of getting a pair of them when I can clear my plate - got a lot on it right now. No use in buying them and storing them away until I can get to them. There are a couple of build threads on AVS - interesting read. Universal reaction is "WOW - so much bass!" - or something like that. I'm getting ready to re-stuff my vintage AR-2ax speakers later today if the rain will stop for a while. I'm not going to work with fiberglass in the house.

Well it took over a year, but I finally pulled the trigger on the Emotiva T1 speaker. Man am I glad that I did. Will post a quick first impression on another thread. Thanks for all the input into the speaker buying decision. Matthew
