Until I went all in on tubes, the equipment.
Now, clearly the music.

I think we always listen to both, whether we like it or not, although I personally prefer equipment that can provide the most persuasive illusion of not being there at all... Still, we all know that is just that, namely, an illusion, right? Besides, when folks brag that they are now really, really, hearing or listening to only the music, what could that possibly mean other than that they're now hearing or listening to that music as delivered by their best or most preferred equipment?
Isn't it rather ironic for such enthusiasts to talk as if their components do not exist, only at the very moment when they're enjoying them most optimally.... Isn't it ironic that they admit to "hearing" or listening to "the equipment" only when there is something about their components that they're not entirely happy with?

Again the words were taken out of my mouth. I was always changing equipment. Reading one thing or another about a better speaker. That was another misguided thought, speakers made the difference (entirely)...what a dummy. I regret having those impure thoughts, because I had many a good speakers. It was not until I enter the inner sanctum of tubes and pre-amps that I realized I wasted money and time but I loss my ignorance. Now it's entirely the music! Since I have had tubes I pay more attention because I am drawn into the music..maybe it's that life-like performance I am hearing.
Good thread!

Way back in the 80s I had a system with boomy bass, rolled off top end and loved it. Vandersteen 2c, Audio Research SP6B preamp, Quicksilver mono amps. That tube system made such a liquid 3D presentation it was shocking. It was all about the music. Tubes ruled until kids came along and home theater. So maybe some more tube music magic in my future?

I like the sound of tubes, but if you say you're listening to your music now that you're using tubes, you're listening to the equipment.
It's just like 'The Argument Clinic'
M: An argument is a connected series of statements intended to establish a proposition.
O: No it isn't!
M: Yes it is! 'tisn't just contradiction.
O: Look, if I *argue* with you, I must take up a contrary position!
M: Yes but it isn't just saying 'no it isn't'.
O: Yes it is!
M: No it isn't!
Notice how M says "it isn't just saying 'no it isn't' and then to further his argument actually says 'no it isn't.'

Potatoe / Potato..... There is no way to separate one from the other because the equipment is what produces the music. So when you listen to the music, you're listening to the music produced by the equipment. Therefore to some degree, you are really listening to the equipment.

Does it really matter? It should be whatever brings you the most enjoyment. The worst thing is when people try and insist they listen to the music but in reality (as evidenced by their Lounge posts) it is all about the equipment.

I listen in the car, I listen through an iPod, I listen at home, I listen at work. All differing tech, same music. Now I enjoy upgrading my tech, no doubt! But I could listen to the equipment with just a tiny bit of software, and I have a healthy music collection.
Cause I listen to music with my varied tech.

I love music pure and simple. If there's a song I like playing I enjoy it no matter what system its being played on. But, I do find music even more enjoyable when being played back on a great system that provides a closer illusion of reality. I also listen to the quality of my system. I enjoy the hobby aspect of being a audiophile by way of improving the sound.

]You stated "but if you say you're listening to your music now that you're using tubes." You totally lost me here. Some people said they used to listen to the equipment, but NOW that they have tube equipment, they listen to the music; they're claiming tubes let them listen to the music, I'm saying they're listening to the tubes.

If there were no equipment, there would be no music...even live music has equipment...manmade instruments and human sourced (voices, claps, foot taps, etc.). So the question is not which we are listening to, but rather what we are focussing on as we listen.
If I am focussing on the equipment, I typically and troubleshooting...and I hate doing that. In other rare times, there is an instrument so amazing to look at that I find myself admiring the equipment as much as or more than the music (example:. A player piano in operation).
But mostly, I love focussing on the music and let the equipment disappear.

Lets not get into semantics here. If there was no music what would be the point of having audio equipment? Because there are differences between tube amplication and SS amplication it's the LISTENER who makes the judgement as to how the MUSIC translates an emotional feeling to what their EARS hear. As for Alan Parsons comment (whose music I grew up with) that is one mans view on a subjective topic. I do not consider myself or label myself as an audiophile but instead I classified myself as a student of music that gives me unlimitless boundaries to explore. There is nothing wrong with identifying yourself as an Audiophile...is nothing more than a person especially interested in music...I just do not like labels when it comes to this subject because there are many roads not yet travel and the ones that have been are at times re-paved.

I love tweaking the gear and I love listening to the music. One hobby that satisfies two cravings. Priceless.

Both, depending of the day and how I feel, some day I am more audiophile and some other more melomane. This is the beauty of being a human, I am not necessarily the exact same robot ever days. But I must admit that every day I start listening music, the first instant of my listening session is dedicated to the equipment playback to verifying if everything sounds good and ok, after this check, normally I progressively stop listening the equipment and the majority of my listening time become to enjoy music. Maybe I'm more a robot then I think.
