I have a Stax SRX-Mk III pair of electrostatic "earspeakers" that are about 30 years old. I haven't used them in many years since they have to plug into a small "energizer" box that must in turn be hooked to the speaker outputs of a good power amp. With the advent of multichannel sound, I never really had a power amp that was running the full spectrum of sound that I wanted to hook that to.
With the purchase of my XPA-5, I now have a surplus Threshold S200 that I have put to work specifically to power those stax headphones. Again, they are 30 years old and have been packed away for probably the last 15, so I wasn't even sure they would work.
Well..not only do they work but they sound glorious. The ear cushions are deteriorating but oddly enough, I was still able to order a replacement pair from stax. How's that for service.
What classic gear do you still use and find to rival or even surpass the new stuff?

NAD 2200 power amp. I think it's about 20 years old. Bridges into 4 ohms without breaking a sweat. Limitless power (seems like it anyway). I use it to power a 12" cylinder sub.

I think power amps are the audio component that ages the best. A good power amp from 20 years ago is still a good power amp today. Compare that to a processor....those things become obsolete within a few years.

I love the classic gear. I still have my Teac 3300s from the early 1970s, and a A2000r from 1981, and my Tascam 52 from mid 1980s. Solid reel to reels that I will probably continue to enjoy well after all the other audio revolutions and fads have faded away.

I owned a teac 2300s back in the mid to late 70's and I loved it. Back then lots of places sold the blank tape but I don't recall seeing reel to reel tape in any audio stores lately. You know, as I think about it...do they even sell cassete blank tape any longer? I haven't noticed that anywhere for a few years either.

I still use my Phase Linear 700B, and I think it's my best sounding amp. They were made from 1974-1978. My Hafler 220 power amp was made somewhere around 1984, and it still sounds good.

I remember listening to those when I was auditioning speakers in the mid 80's. I ended up with Magnepan MG3a's at that point, but those polks always sounded really nice as well.

Those replacement ear pads for my Stax headphones were shipped directly from japan. I got the tracking info and it said they left Osaka on 5/10...but that would be Tokyo time. The update today says they are at US customs now.

heck, I was gonna ask you for pics in the other thread . . thanks for posting! They were real easy to install. The old ones just peeled right off leaving a nice shiny metal ring for the new double stick tape ring to be placed on. The new pads fit perfectly.

Hard to find tape but Ebay and a few vendors still selling tape. I am watching out for pancakes of Scotch 207 since the early 70s Teac's were aligned with that tape.

I still have three high end , 3 head, 3 motor cassette decks which are nice pieces of gear but hardly ever get used. They all still work great though. Remote controls and everything.
I don't have to worry about finding blank tape either. I literally bought a lifetime supply at Sams Club probably 10 years ago. They had Maxell XLIIs and TDK SA cassettes on sale cheap and I stocked up big time. I bet I have 200 brand new blanks here yet. I'll never use them all.
