Boy that pioneer cassette player brings back memories , if I remember right it was a pretty good sounding deck too , didn`t it have heads that would play steel taps or something like that - can`t remember what the cassette taps where called , but where able to produce better/higher frequencies or maybe I got that wrong too Maxell had an MX metal tape (other companies, too), is that what you are thinking of? Yea I think that`s what I was thinking ,I know the taps where like twice the price of high bias chrome tape

I've never seen a cassette deck like that. It's pretty cool looking. Top is Type I, the next cassette down is Type II, and the bottom two are type IV (metal). I use type II when I can. My cassette deck supports type IV, but I've never seen a type IV cassette. Now you have..I still have multiple unopened boxes of them.

Ah memories. I had a tape from TDK that had a chromium dioxide tape and the shell was made from cast aluminum. It cost $10 for about 60 min/side....but it was cool, all the same.

Those TDK MA-R cassettes were the business with that cast aluminum chassis. I have still around someplace. Here is one.

I just did some searching on amazon.com, and I'm not sure if metal (type IV) cassette tapes are available any longer. Amazon had none for sale.

It is getting hard to find even type 2 tape let alone type 4. I hate to say it but Ebay looks like the only place to get Metal Particle tape anymore. Type 2 or Chromium Dioxide equivalents are getting just harder and harder to find too. As much as I love cassette, I may just stick with DAT, yeah like that is easier to find tape wise too. Getting harder and harder to keep this Tascam 122 mk.3 well fed. ;D

Just picked this up from "fleabay" , its my first foray into vynal since I was about 10 yrs old . I cant wait to hook it up , it just seems wrong that the only thing I have connected to my USP-1 is my ERC-1. I also picked up a pair of Sennheiser HD 480s circa 1980 and they sound great!

Nice...I remember that TT from my college daze. Me too. Consider yourself fortunate then , these things where all the rage when I was kid....... the only bad thing about the 70s was that it was immediately followed by the 80s .

I've been enjoying my Thorens TD166 turntable lately. I think I bought mine new ~25 years ago, give or take a couple. I had been having problems getting the platter to turn + really bad hum in one channel. A simple fix to the RCA plugs and making sure the power cord was nice and snug into the table (and not being pulled by other cords) solved both issues. So, I was listening to Toto IV last night on vinyl. Very nice...

I always enjoyed a friend's Hafler. We ran his (a DH200 or 220, can't recall) against my old Rotel RB980BX (which I still have and still love!), and they were both really nice sounds. And, can't go wrong with that Thorens/Grace!

I posted these pics in a Phase linear 700 emporium thread, but thought they may be of interest here as well. I was just digging through my collection of brochures and audio mags from the 70's and 80's. I have tons of them. The Phase Linear 400 amp in it's walnut cabinet: the reverse side of the brochure with the sales pitch and the specs:
