A number of loudspeaker manufacturers recommend this, including the company that my systems came from. Bill "You mean like don't just replace one tire at a time if one blows out." Ha Ha.....yes!! I never did that, despite what the company said! Like most, I saw that as a way to add to their financial well being, not mine. There is validity to matched drivers, particularly when talking about vintage, and restored loudspeakers. Now 40 years after first reading that (from Allison Acoustics), I completed a total woofer restoration, professionally done of the (4) 10 inch woofers, and (4) 8 inchers, in 2016. This was especially important regarding the smaller drivers, since they were a collection of new old stock, plus one from an Ebay seller that was on the way out. That work was done by Bill Legall of Miller Sound, out in PA. Bill is a true artisan and has been in demand in the Tri State area for decades, with all of his hands on expertise. Bill

"did the amp have too much power?" What are these words and what could they mean? Too much amp power, whos says things like that?!?!?! Trey Well better put...... Loudspeakers that are inadequately protected (thermally fused or otherwise) can easily be driven past their designed excursion limits, with a very high powered amplifier. Not enough power, and blown tweeters are usually the end result. Bill

Trey That's like if someone crashes a Corvette, then asks if the car had too much horsepower. That reminds me of when I sold my 82 Firebird Trans Am with the 305 V8 and a Stage 1 shift reprogram to a co-worker. For those that don't know, the 305 had about 150 HP and was not very fast. The "shift kit" made it quicker and would break the chirp/squeal the tires in first and second gear. Within a week he had it wrapped around a pole. When I asked him what happened, he claimed it was just too fast for him and lost control of it.

That's like if someone crashes a Corvette, then asks if the car had too much horsepower. The answer to which could be "yes" if the power was being misused. Large amplifiers can indeed blow speakers, when the power is misapplied.

"..... speakers. They are the most changed out piece of people's systems." I think this is unlikely..... I don't know what the stats are, but I would THINK playback, particularly bluray players would be at the top of that list, followed by VIDEO monitors and then receivers and processors, amps. etc. Once you've ended up with speakers that really do it for you, they can stand there like monuments for many years, while the other components fall out of favor, for one reason or another. Bill You could be right bill with your assessment. I was basing my thoughts strictly on topic of the thread..You obviously were thinking out of the box which is correct. I am in a position that unless something breaks and the piece is not worth it $$$ I won't be changing anything....soon 😆

Any AUDIBLE sign of distress prior to the smoke being released? It's your own fault, you know. Several things happen to speakers as you feed them more power. They get HOT inside, for one. Electrically they change, too. Simpliest Explanation:: www.sweetwater.com/insync/power-compression/If you like it THAT loud, you might consider Cerwin Vega. Some of them are pretty darn durable and will get you evicted from the STATE before they burn up. Thanks, there was no warning nor smoke I believe, the notice of the problem was a crackle sound from the mid driver (L) side when I put on another track at low volume, I then noticed 3 woofers not sitting where they should be,, All said and done damage has been done. I'll look in to new speakers

klinemj? sounds like a description of 'excess excursion'. Voice coils got blown out of the gap and never quite recovered.

"With great power comes great responsibility."- Confusionist This is also part of the credo of the SMBS You should look into the price of new drivers...even if the drivers are $100 a piece thats only $600 dollars...new speakers are $2500. Over half the value is the enclosure if well built.

Thanks, I will look into this option, as I do enjoy the look of the KEF, not really the whole point in buying speakers but they are very much the focal point(s) of the room. The cost of getting stuff shipped to New Zealand of this size is kinda high, parts will be far easier to manage. Kiwiemo

Too much power, that's like too much money..... you can't have too much but you can use it unwisely.
However too little power is usually more harmful.
