I would recommend you try the DC-1. It has all the features and performance you need right now ! Podcast 06.02.17 says the DC-2 will be available in the 3rd quarter, with enhanced capabilities, and (of course!) a slightly higher price. So I gotta wait and go for the DC-2. Or should I wait for the DC-3? (kidding!) Not kidding when I say you can get a DC-1 now without DSD support for 1X, 2X and 4X streams and 32 bit 384K decoder and still get great sound. I have no need of those and even if they improved other things the current DC-1 has nothing to be ashamed of.

The BasX line is complete with no stand alone preamp DAC other than the PT-100. The X-Series stand alone preamp DAC was retired but Emotiva may have something in the works for the X-Series that nobody knows about. The small DC-1 and DC-2 are professional desktop preamp DAC's. There may be a full size in the future for both the X-Series and whatever they call the RMC-1 Series. Think about it.

I hope the DC-2 has 1/4" and balanced headphone outputs and ability to power any headphones, but might already as I don't recall. A new DAC chip would be welcome addition. One other thing I'd like to see is a 100WPC into 8ohm amp in the same form factor. I'd be set for desktop music.

Kind of you, thank you. Does that come with vodka or tequila, I don't really care which but curious nonetheless.

I guess the primary value adds of full-width DACs are appearance and more inputs; both very valid. I do wonder if full-width DACs might eventually be less popular, overall, than smaller models. The well regarded Mytek Brooklyn, for example, offers quite a few inputs at only 8.5 inches square and 4 lbs but Mytek also makes a full-width DAC as well. Brooklyn Manhattan

But in case you don't want to wait they already have a (very) high power headphone amp for sale - the mini-x a100 . Which just so happens to be a quite good speaker amp! It also fits the current dimensions of the DC-1 chassis so it stacks well together though the amp is deeper.

I'm in New Zealand, so it would have to be 240/50 compatible, but I am a patient person and can wait. Thanks for the offer.

Most Emotiva products are compatible with 230V and can swing a few volts one way or another. But I would double check with Emotiva first.

They do sell in NZ, which was a nice surprise. I'm eager for more information on the DC-2 and am about to pull the trigger on the Sennheiser HD650's. I'll be using the outboard amp for some coax speakers I built.

I don't know if they still do but it's a large discount.

However you have to wait 6 months and my understanding is that the sound quality is the same, but the build quality is not, according to posters. I will probably buy the HD650 from BHPhotoVideo as it's the same price as Amazon. I try not to buy from Amazon because they kept putting me on prime when I didn't sign up. At least that's when I lived in Colorado. I'm so curious what the updated features of the DS-2 will be. Right now it's between that and the Schiit JOTUNHEIM. The DC-1 has more digital imputs which is very appealing and if they come out with a strong built in headphone amp and bigger 1/4" or balanced headphone connections, it's kind of a win, IMO.

The DC-1 is similar in quality to the Schiit Gungnir multibit which I tried. It had a wee bit more detail in room ambience but not quite the vertical height. Impressive considering the Gungnir multibit is more than 2 times the price. The Gungnir multibit is also quite nice too imo. I guess what I'm saying is I don't know if one can compare the DC-1 DAC to the Jotunheim. I would instead buy a USED DC-1 (warranty transfers) and then buy a Jotunheim (or the $200 mini-x a-100). I don't know exactly what the DC-2 will bring to the table. I'm just hoping they won't mess with a winning formula. If you haven't already check out the specification page of the mini-x a-100. It may surprise you. It's very powerful and will drive the HD650's very well. Also has a 1/4 inch headphone jack and a torroidal transformer.

Are the EGO DACs the same DAC technology as the DC-1? If not....
I'm wondering if Emotiva plans to release a higher-end, standalone DAC. I know DACs with a preamp and headphone amp are popular, but for some people the preamp and headphone amp portions are unused features. Basically, it'd be nice to get the same quality DAC, but at a lower price by removing the preamp and headphone amp.

Basically, it'd be nice to get the same quality DAC, but at a lower price by removing the preamp and headphone amp. The Egos use a Cirrus Logic DAC while getting the power from the USB outlet of your computer. The DC-1 uses two Analog devices AD1955 DACs in dual mono fully balanced mode with a torroid power supply getting the power from the wall. In terms of technology implementation and purist design, the DC-1 has the advantage. The Ego I believe can do higher sample rates though. Also @bmoney has heard both and he said he thought the sound was so similar that he couldn't see why somebody would buy the DC-1 if they had an Ego. Having not heard the Ego I can't comment on the sound quality other than to say that my DC-1 is real class!
