I like vinyl, a lot. I can see about 2000 records behind me, my Rega in front of me, and I just ripped side two of You Are What You Is.
Why in the world is Sony making vinyl when they could put some muscle behind SACD?
Vinyl is great, but it is yesterday.
SACD is tangible music that many of us would purchase.

Sony has one purpose and one purpose only, they see the potential dollar signs and they don't want to be left out. For those of you who think this technology is yester year, you are right it is, but the young have discovered that it sounds better than what they are currently listening to and the covers art draw you in as well as dollar records from the used stores and some of these stores it they are smart have listening stations that allow people to listen to what they are about to purchase. I personally have a very good digital set up and analog set up so to me it doesn't matter, but I do absolutely enjoy vinyl and still buy records as well as cds/sacds. I have a two great cd player/one is a sacd player, a great turntable and a Aurrender NH-100 with a great DAC. For me it's about the music first and having the physical medium and knowing technology how hard drives and other storage devices and servers operate and can fail. I don't want to rely on any service to provide music, I want to be able to archive it myself and control when and how I listen to it. I say way to go Sony!!!, better late than never and don't let the rest of your competition catch you sleeping!!!!

They won't get any money out of me. I buy second hand vinyl. I try to get the best quality available - usually that is the older stuff.

I have over 2000 CDs and 2000 LPs but both are yesterday. Streaming is the future. The others are nostalgic fads. 90% of those under 40 years of age stream. Wake up audiophiles

Streaming certainly is the future. But I like owning copies of my music. And some of the weird stuff I have and like will never make it to the stream sadly.

" the young have discovered that it sounds better than what they are currently listening to"
How do you know this and what are the stats you are referencing?

Among serious vinyl lovers, it is a format here to stay. But for the people Sony is going after, it's just another Pokemon Go.
On top of that, most likely you're not going to get the best of pressings from a money hungry outfit like Sony. It's all to capitalize on a fad.

While they haven't actually put SACD in the public domain, Sony will license it to anybody who wants to use it for free. (You too can be a licensee... just fill out the form.) Clearly they are convinced that the format has no remaining commercial value. At least vinyl sales have experienced a small resurgence. CD sales continue to drop... and I can't even see SACD sales on the graph. (If vinyl sales level off, and CD sales continue going the way they are, CD sales will pass vinyl - on the way down - in five years or so. ) Personally, I've always felt that SACDs ONLY had two benefits over CDs.... 1) they deliver a slightly higher equivalent sample rate (although I'll admit that I rarely hear the difference) 2) they support multi-channel surround sound Digital downloads now offer both of those benefits - and do them better than SACDs ever did. And, if you really like the DSD AUDIO FORMAT used on SACDs better, now you can get THAT with with digital downloads too. While I'll admit that I sort of like getting to hold some sort of plastic media in my hand, that is apparently not a compelling selling point these days. I like vinyl, a lot. I can see about 2000 records behind me, my Rega in front of me, and I just ripped side two of You Are What You Is. Why in the world is Sony making vinyl when they could put some muscle behind SACD? By the time Sony gets geared up, all things vinyl will be but a glimmer in the millennials eye. This is just another fad, like vans and CB radio's. Our attention spans are just to short these days .
