Yes, I know about Audiogon, and there are some astonishing prices for some (I guess) exotic expensive speakers, etc. Still I wonder what actually sells, since I'm strongly considering moving on from my 19 year old Vandersteen 3A Signatures. I can't imagine just having them hauled away (they work just fine), so I guess I would have to go the sales route (Oh my aching back!), Audiogon or otherwise. Vandersteen does not sell used gear, just will repair or upgrade them (I asked). I would also be wanting to clear the shelves of other classic gear, like the Threshold Fet-9 pre-amp - I saw one sold for $925 about three years ago!

For my money, the best place to move out old/vintage loudspeakers is Ebay, for a number of reasons. You have protection with Ebay since the buyers are required to follow the Ebay buy sell rules (plus you have Pay Pal.) Ebay commands the largest audience including WORLDWIDE should that route be necessary.
I have not followed Vandersteen's, however, if you set up a search for them on Ebay, you will get a feel for the used marketplace in a relatively short period of time. Ebay is an exercise in human nature, and after a while it becomes easy to separate the dreamers and schemers from good and honest sellers. But you do have more to go on there besides your gut. Seller reputation and feedback, plus how long they've been out there are all useful tools to the end game. Selling is a pain, granted and it's my least favorite thing to do there, but necessary at times.
For what it's worth, I sold off a beloved pair of Allison Loudspeakers that I bought NEW in 1977. Ala Ebay I got it done with only One listing, and fetched the same price I got for them when purchased new, 35 years later.

Allison's were of course, well I'll use the term, unique, designed to sound really good right up against the wall. So, I suspect that was a particularly good factor in getting your price - not to mention inflation. My Vandersteen's cost me $3500 back then and their current version is kissing $5000 a pair. I'm not worried so much about how much I can get, just the royal pain-in-the-butt in having to sell/ship/whatever them, and worry if they'll be ok in shipping and use.

I actually just gave away my old ~25-year-old Vandersteen 2Ci's to a friend as their first foray into high[ish]-end audio. They were ecstatic and I got to feel good about it. And of course I got to enjoy my new Legacy Audio Focus SEs!

Still a fan of Audiogon. PayPal offers some buyer protection but Audiogon's dispute resolution is excellent although I only had one issue in 30+ sales/purchases.
Audiogon's flat rate listing is another reason I prefer them over other avenues.

Ask yourself if you need the money or not. I have seen some really interesting speakers on local craigslist. Someone who is a fan of the brand and who would most likely enjoy the speakers could be found. Put them out there for a very seasonable number and watch someone get joy from something you don't want anymore
If you want/need to maximize your return try Ebay Audiogon or US Audio Mart.

Do old speakers really sell? To answer the OP, I'd have to say "it depends on the speakers." The more expensive the speaker was originally, and the greater the prestige of the speaker designer, the more likely "old" speakers are to sell.
For example - Got some 1970's Klipschorns? I guarantee they'll sell
Old Snells, Dahlquists, Magnepans, Revels, Avalons, B&Ws, Infinity (Arnie Nudel vintage) IRSs, KEFs, etc. all sell.
Your 1970s Cerwin Vegas, bookshelf JBLs, JC Penny, and Bose speakers - not so much...
You've also got to watch out for foam woofer cones. They rot away to flaking nothingness. You can replace them, but the average hobbyist wouldn't try.

All great places to try..... I can only add that I was following a dream that began in 1987 with the introduction of the IC-20, from Allison Acoustics. Most of us audio nuts have a "dream loudspeaker" that comes to mind. My dream was just that, until 2012, and after shining on 2 pair over the course of a few years, I found the right pair. They were on EBAY......the very first consecutive serial numbered units assembled before going into actual production.

Do old speakers really sell?
Yes if you have some that people want. Two months ago I purchased a pair of 33 year old Polk Audio SDA-2's, after hearing that news and seeing pictures of them my brother decided he had to have a pair so Thursday I'm purchasing a pair of Polk Audio SDA-1c's for my brother from my Emotiva buddy for life "snacker" then my brother is driving from Chicago to Las Vegas next month to pick them up. Yes they do sell, and yes you can find some in outstanding condition.
I had decided to only buy new equipment because when I tried to get some used Carver equipment on e-bay back in the early 2000's I got burned twice. Then I met "snacker" he has no problem getting previously enjoyed equipment I've been amazed at the vintage speakers we have enjoyed over the past six years. I was over his place two weeks ago and there were five pairs of speakers within eye shot including the SDA's he's selling my brother he had more in other rooms now he's currently listening to Vienna Bach Grands and Hayden Grands. He always gets what he paid for them or a little more. Most purchases are local Craig's list equipment, and he sells them the same way. He will tell me he's selling something and the next week or so it's gone so the equipment moves fast. He has made me a believer.

You'll sell something sure, but only if it's heavily marked down.

I am surprised. It's slim pickings here for Craigslist sales. You'll sell something sure, but only if it's heavily marked down. Same here. Type in 'speakers' in the search box on my local CL and the only things you'll see is for well worn car subs and the occasional 5.0 set of Ericsson/Sony/etc surrounds for $200 a pop! Doesn't take much to impress the locals - if you've got a set of 5.1 Bose Lifestyle speakers you're talking high end! Bose doesn't last long on CL in this area. Selling speakers and electronics around here on CL has been a crapshoot for me. I have sold a few things locally. One was an Infinity Cascade Model 15 sub. I got my asking price - the guy had to drive 70 miles to pick it up. The other sale was a pair of Infinity IL40s. Nice sounding speakers. I put them up for $300. The only person that came over to hear them took a 5 minute listening session - handed me $300 cash and we loaded them up. I tried selling my bedroom 2 channel AVR (Yamaha RX-V773) on CL last year. I had it up for $275 - a fair asking price IMO. I lost count of the idiots that would text me asking if I would consider $150, $200, 225 etc. One even texted: "I can get a 5.1 (Emerson, Sony, etc , I forget the brand!) setup with speakers from Walmart for less than just that Yamaha!" I texted back that he/she should be shopping at Walmart, not CL. Then there are the scammers on Cl. Pretty much kinfolk to those robo-callers we all hate so much.

"I weeeel take your Craigslist offering and throw in an extra $100 for your trouble. I will send payment immediately via a bank draft from my uncle's bank in Nigeria. We may need to round the price up & have you send me the difference. But consider your wonderful speakers sold and thank you again for your trouble!"
ROTFLMAO...

Of my experience with USAUDIOMART.COM I sold two pieces within two weeks. It really depends on the equipment being sold and the demand for the product. My two experiences were very good. I sold my B&W804S speakers for better than half of what I bought them for nine years prior. I had original boxes and manual in addition to the speakers being in PRISTINE condition....cash deal.
Selling less expensive gear, mainstream products, they sell very well on E-Bay especially if you advertise "FREE SHIPPING" Selling big ticketed items such as Wilson Audio AV enthusiasts look towards Audiogon. As far as a recommendation on CRAIGLISTS that caveat would be to not to take that road. It could be trouble. Craigslist has 0 responsibility for whom you contact which could very well be someone casing your house or just set out to rob you. To many bad reviews.
Audioasylum.com is well regarded. Also if you want to take a more simple way to sell your products thru your own neighborhood try the FREE app "LETGO"
Good luck!
