I am looking at probably upgrading my SC-25 that I have.
Current setup TV: Sony X850D | LED | 4K ULTRA HD | HIGH DYNAMIC RANGE (HDR) | Receiver: Pioneer Elite SC25 Source: Nvidia Sheild – Plex, Netflix, OTA HDTV Want to be able to take advantage of 4k & HDR Stuff. I also use zone 2 for audio for speakers out on the deck. I may also want a zone 2 for audio out there as well.
Requirements for receiver - Key things I use from my SC-25 and some items missing since getting a 4k tv.
Items Missing on SC-25: HDCP 2.2 for 4K Video HDR-compatible
Items I use on SC-25:
Zone 2 for music in the backyard 5.1 setup Auto Speaker Calibration Support DD, TrueHD, DD+, EX don’t care about Dolby Atoms right now Pure Direct mode
For price range under $800 max which models might you recommend to go with the Goldenear supersats speakers. Supersat 50s R/L, 60C, 3s for rears and two 15 inch subs in a room that is 11' 6" deep by 12' 6" wide.
I just started looking into my options. I am willing to buy refurb from say accessories4less as I see there list has grown not sure if that is a good/bad thing.

I would check out the Denon X3400H. I have its big brother and cannot get over how good this thing sounds. I have it hooked to the Sony Bravia XBR55X800E running off the Denon. The picture looks incredible after a bit of tweaking and calibration. That Denon is on sale right now for $799. It is worth a look. Oh, and my X4400H unit is running without a hitch, no complaints, and much better than the Denon 4308ci unit it replaced. Better all around. Oh, and the HEOS ap is the bomb if you stream off your phone or other BT device.

Reviving as the change is happening now. Looking at all of these at Accessories4less and trying to stay under $500. These all fit my needs.

I'm afrtaid that unless you really know who is recommending what, that you might end up disappointed. Sure, everything mentioned is a real brand, and I suppose, with good reputations. But Hearing Is Believing.
Have you considered a Pre-Pro or you Gotta have a receiver? The seperates solution WILL cost more $$, but IMO, but of more 'lasting' value. Just ASK about getting HT stuff actually fixed. Any HT receiver more than 3 or 4 years old starts to get IFFY on the fix it front.
Since you mention Pure Direct mode, does that mean you don't care about many of the 'features' included in an HT product? Will you want any Airplay or Bluetooth connectivity?
Me? I'd be out trying to HEAR as many as possible. Something, good or bad, may jump out at you making your decision easier.

I was kind of thinking the same thing... I know it's sort of cliche, but many of the products out there, even from reputable brands, actually don't sound very good. (And, to be fair, many customers don't notice the difference, or do really value features over sound quality.) I've talked to a LOT of people who have switched from another major brand to our gear, or vice versa, and many were shocked that they heard a major difference in sound quality. More specifically, I've talked to lots of people who replaced a very expensive piece of gear from another brand with one of our processors. Many were hoping that our gear would "sound at least close - for a much better price", and many were shocked to find that our gear sounded noticeably and obviously better. (I wouldn't expect you to take my word for that... but do yourself a favor and find out for yourself... don't take someone else's word that it isn't true.) I would also specifically caution everyone about the various "pure mode" and "pure direct mode" options. Some of those modes may in fact bypass all the processing - as Direct Mode does on our products. However, on some brands, all "pure mode" does is to shut off the front panel display, or bypass a few processing options. ALWAYS read the fine print before assuming what those modes do. I'm afrtaid that unless you really know who is recommending what, that you might end up disappointed. Sure, everything mentioned is a real brand, and I suppose, with good reputations. I agree with Keith agreeing with me! (how's that again?)
But would add ONE minor thing. Sales guys at most stores are both commission driven AND underinformed.
IMO? You should take the time to READ the instructions on the short-list of receivers you are considering. Some of those manuals are getting to be Phone-Book sized and are written in Techno-Gibberish being translated from the original Belarusian into Turkish than into the language for point of sale. Like an early 1960s Japanese Motorcycle Manual.
At least IKEA gets it right with All Visual instructions needing NO translation.

Oh I get what everyone is saying. I have owned/tested many receivers in the past but things do change over time. In some senses this is just getting a feel for what people are buying and why. Sometimes you find out more info. Like I wasn't aware of the Onkyo issue knucklehead pointed out. I usually will go into a store with a mixed music cd and movie clips to get a feel for what I like.

Well I think it is between the Pioneer/Yamaha.
I don't need preouts as I don't plan on adding an amp.
My room is small and I don't need the power I used to.
Right now kind of deciding between the Pioneer 302 and Yamaha 770/860(don't the preouts) but does have the YPAO multipoint.

Not that I count, but SOME HT stuff simply sounds bad.
Best POSSIBLE advice is to go and LISTEN, forget 99% of reviews and reviewers and use your EARS.

I too am looking to upgrade, I had purchased a XPA G3 9 Channel amp at Axpona, and looking a t a Pre/Pro. I currently have a Denon X4000 which works fine. I was debating on the XMC-1, and others for future upgradability. The Denon doesn't support HDMI 2.--- W/O purchasing another AVR. I really dont care for ATMOS at this time and prefer to stick with 7.2. Maybe I'll upgrade to ATMOS once more movies come out using that technology.
Would it be feasible to upgrade to the XMC-1?

Actually, that was the plan to use the additional 2 channel for my patio (Z2) or buy another set of speakers for L/R surround rather than the in ceilings I am currently using.

If you don't care about ATMOS and need Z2 analog outs, then get the XMC-1 Gen 2 which now comes with V3 HDMI Board upgrade from factory. It will ship after May 1st, though.
