While shopping for a new TV to replace my plasma I got to hear a pair of the the new ELAC F5 speakers. I like what I heard and I bought a pair. Fast forward through me realizing the old A/V receiver was not going to cut it with the 4k or the future.
I am going to take the death of the old TV as the beginning of my new system built with separates. Starting with the speakers I recently bought I am hesitant to commit to an amp. The F5's are 4 ohm speakers with an 85 db sensitivity and listed by ELAC to have a max input of 140 watts RMS. I pretty much kept the thought for the last 25 years or so that within reason it did not matter what wattage your amp was running to your speakers as long as the speaker did not clip or distort. Now I don't know why I thought this but now that I am looking for an amp I am finding hard to find an exact match. I would happily mate the speakers to an A-300 or an A- 500, but is that too much? Actually I would love to have an XPA-2 drive the speakers, but I'm already guessing that 490 watts RMS is just too awesomeness for a 140 RMS max.
Any thoughts or direction to point me in?

There is no such thing as too many watts. Just don't turn it up too loud. But there is such a thing as too little watts, that cause distortion before it's too loud. Distortion kills many more speakers than watts.

I have the ELAC B6 stand mounted speakers. I've driven them with...
Marantz AVR (70 watts/channel) Parasound amp (125 watts/channel) Bryston amps (250 watts/channel) (borrowed amp) OddWatt tube amp (15 watts/channel).
All sounded great but I thought the Parasound and the low power tube amp sounded really special.

I have Elac F5s on my HT system running 250 watts of McIntosh power. I have also listened to the system in my audio only room with my BasX300 amp. Both sound fine. Also My manual shows them to be 8 ohms not 4 with efficiency of 90db.
My recommendation would be to get the BasX300 amp. But think the XPA2 would even be better

If you want the XPA-2 there is no reason not to get it. You won't be sorry.

Too much power? Is that like a girl too pretty, too much money, or too much fun?

No affiliation to the seller but this is a great deal. emotivalounge.proboards.com/thread/51011/fs-250-amplifier-excellent-conditionThere are many amps for sale here on the lounge, I see some XPA-2 Gen 2 amps for sale as well but IMO the SA-250 would be a great choice. A speaker with 85 dB sensitivity could use some real power behind it, go for it.

Dont worry about too much power. I use 1000 watt amps on my speakers. You can damage a speaker with too much power but you have to be really going nuts and ignoring signs of speaker distress.

Bill What was REALLY going on was 30 years ago, I knew nothing about subwoofers, frequency response, (what full range really means.) Once I got educated, the result was 1000, down to 400 (still a ton by any standard) and the high power for the lows is in the sub. Amplifier. Balance of power. Bill

The problem I had with 1000 watts was when someone else was at the controls 😡. I once came home and powered up...........No sound. I (fortunately) had in line fuses in place. My wife blew them BOTH out. Bill

If you turn on your system and your loudspeakers release the magic smoke and the smell of a million frying plastic soda straws, that's too much power.
