The amp looked sweet last April at Axpona. It has the same beefy binding posts as the XPR amps and it looked solid. I’m sure it will perform beautifully- guess I’ll find out at Axpona 2018 😊. I will see you there , got my Gold Pass today and booked my hotel room....debating on flying/driving......likely flying

I'll definitely be interested in seeing your comparison review! It will be interesting as I have the same front stage as you do(Focus SE/Marquis).....so I am hoping it goes well. Oohhh! Even better!!! Casey

I thought I’d give my good friends on the Lounge a sneak peek at the new XPA Differential Reference Series amplifiers! These beautiful new amplifiers will be shipping the first week of January and we’ll be taking pre-orders next week. Look for them on the site by Wednesday of next week. The new XPA DR-1 will develop well over 600 watts RMS into 8 ohms. The XPA DR-2 will output well over 550 watts RMS into 8 ohms, two channels driven, and the XPA DR-3 will deliver over 450 RMS into 8 ohms with all three channels driven. These are all low distortion, full bandwidth power specs. Pricing from $1,199.00 to 1,999.00. DR-1: DR-2: DR-3: Cheers, Big Dan. I thought these were suppose to be on the web-site by 12/13/17...

I have ONE question.
SMPS are generallly considered to have a weak area. That would be dynamic power.
Everyone knows that unless you are on the test bench AND probably have a Variac to provide for line voltage sag,, you will NEVER use or need the RMS power. Especially both channels driven.
Of far more use would be the Dynaimc power. NAD, for example, at one time, claimed as much as 6db dynamic range. For a 50 watt amp, that works out to 200 watt peaks.
Something like 800 watt peaks against 600 RMS would be about 1.25db headroom. This might come in handy for low sensitivity speakers which may require a lot of power and be capable of actually absorbing large, short time-period peaks.
With such a large RMS rating given that most persons will have at least medium sensitivity speakers I don't know this is a big issue, but testeres with a good bench protocol will test for this.

I spec my amp requirements based on peaks (or headroom) I want to achieve, and then buy an amp that can meet those power requirements as an RMS spec.

3/4 or more of those who purchase 'Mega Power' amps don't need that kind of grunt. Many of the rest would be as well or better served by an amp with not as ambititous RMS rating and a high or higher dynamic rating.
Your electric bill may see a minor lowering by so doing and you will probably also operate your amp in an area closer to the 'sweet spot'. That may improve SoundQuality.
Something like 200 continuous and 300 dynamic peak provides over 1.75db headroom.
Such amps are easier to move. Easier to cool. And for the HT guys? Something like the XPR-5, as a pre-owned might get my attention.

I've never heard of dynamic peak, new one on me but then I'm not an EE or audio engineer. However through the years I have owned a lot of different amps with various RMS power ratings and with no exceptions to my ears has the sound of a pair of speakers not improved with the higher powered amps.

My first post here. I have to completely agree with the above statement. Over the last 20 or so years, I have fluctuated in power, from 60 watts per channel to 600 watts, and back down again. Without question, the higher the power, the better the sound, regardless of what level I typically listened at. The speakers seemed better "locked" to the amp, better sound stage, etc. I am currently in the market for a new stereo amp, and looking at the DR2 very seriously. I am wondering what the synergy would be with a XSP-1 driving a XPA-DR2? I bet that would be a nice setup.

ronf, welcome! I'm sure the XSP-1 pre-amp would match nicely with the new DR-2 amp. I had one, sold it for the XMC-1 but it was and still is a great pre-amp. Good luck with your decisions.

However through the years I have owned a lot of different amps with various RMS power ratings and with no exceptions to my ears has the sound of a pair of speakers not improved with the higher powered amps. Music and even movies varies from fairly low levels to the occassional 'burst' at fairly high levels. Dynamic power is the ability of an amp to very briefly produce higher than its RMS rating. This is partly a numbers / rating and marketing move and partly power supply and output section. With a lot of power on tap, this would appear to be a less important measurable (but not usually measured, except by the likes of Stereophile) but with lower powered amps, which frequently sound better at normal listening levels, dynamic power gets to be somewhat more important.
