Hey all,
So I ended up taking the Roku Premiere+ back to best buy as I'm thinking the NVIDIA Shield seems to be more up my alley but at $229 CAD for the remote version it ain't cheap, heck I can grab an XBOX One for that price but what made me return the Roku is I understand that Tidal now has a Android TV app and the Roku would not pass through the lossless audio codecs of my Blu-ray MKV files on my hard drives and I have read and been informed that the Shield will do this. The xbox and PS4 seem to both not be able to do this.
So I guess what I'm asking is does anyone here have the Shield and do they use Tidal and or Plex with it, my main uses are Netflix, Tidal and Plex and other than the Shield I'm not finding anything else that will passthrough the DTS-HD and Dolby True-HD codecs.
Chad

Hey Chad, I have two Shields and love them. They replaced two of my Amazon FireTV gen. 2s, I have one left but I'm waiting for another sale or a new version to become available before I swap out the FireTV. In my humble opinion, the shield is faster to load / switch between apps, works like a dream as a Plex client and it has played everything I've thrown at it with ease. I have used devices from Ruku, was an avid Apple TV user for years and then a FireTV user for almost as long, but to me and for my needs, the Shield is the best player that I have come across. I would not recommend using it as a Plex Server as it doesn't have enough CPU power for multiple and or transcoded streams, but as an all around streamer... highly recommended. I'm an Amazon Prime, Netflix, SlingTV and over the air TV user. Specs from nVidia's website: Dolby Atmos and DTS-X surround sound pass through over HDMI High-resolution audio playback up to 24-bit/192 kHz over HDMI and USB High-resolution audio up-sample to 24-bit/192 kHz over USB Audio support: AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, MP3, WAVE, AMR, OGG Vorbis, FLAC, PCM, WMA, WMA-Pro, WMA-Lossless, DD+/DTS (pass-through), Dolby Atmos and Dolby TrueHD (pass-through), DTS-X and DTS-HD (pass-through) Every once and a while Best Buy throws them on sale for around $175, so I horde my Best Buy points. Sorry, but I don't use Tidal, so I can't comment on that; however, streaming my music library, Plex has worked just fine for that as well.

Thanks for the info, it looks to be my answer for my needs as a streaming box, as for Plex I run the server on my PC that I'm currently typing on so no worries there. Only issue so far is I can't find one local, Best Buy is the main electronics retailer and they don't even carry it in store and they are sold out and no one else carries it so it seems my best option is Memory Express as Amazon doesn't take Paypal which I find odd. I guess I'll have to pay the $9 shipping charge Total for the one with only the remote will come to just over $270 with shipping and taxes...sheesh Chad

Chad I currently run a ShieldTV running Tidal and Plex thru Kodi and works great. The Kodi add-on for Tidal(Use Tidal2 app) seems to sound better than the actually Google Play Store official app. Same with Plex as I could only get it too passthrough DTS-HD & Dolby TrueHD with Kodi add-on, which is an official app from Plex.

Does it have Amazon video? If it doesn’t do the web version of Tidal you can’t stream Full MQA either. Ive been looking at the ATV 4K as well. Just can’t make up my mind which will serve my purposes best.

I haven't had much time to mess around with Kodi, I'll have to look into how all those things work in it lol, currently I just use the actual Plex app which passes the HD audio just fine and Tidal I use as well. Yeah I guess you would need a hardware decoder as the Desktop App has the software decoding, even so I'm happy with CD Quality Cool I got the skin installed, just need to figure out how you have the Tidal and Plex right from the main menu lol, I'm a Kodi newbie Chad

Yes but it uses the Google version which is different than the one used on FireTV. I prefer the later but having everything on one device is worth it!!!
