I took delivery yesterday on a BASX A-300 which I purchased new thru my local cherished Audio dealer here in South Florida. In order to "break it in" and get it up to speed ASAP I let it play music fed from my Cocktail Audio X-35 low level outputs at a low/moderate level. This morning when I go up the A-300 was making, and is still making a noise that sounds like a computer fan going bad. This is now constant. I spoke to the dealer who claims that the A-300 doesn't even have a fan. It's definitely a rotational sound and it stops for awhile when I turn the A-300 off and back on again.
Anyone have some ideas?

The BasX A-300 does in fact have a small pair of thermostatically controlled fans. They are normally very quiet, and only run when the unit is warm, although you may hear them "spin up" momentarily when you turn on the unit. Therefore, some slight "rotational noise" is normal... about on a level with a quiet computer fan... when the amp is warm. However, if it sounds like a "fan going bad", then you might actually have a bad fan. (If you look at the interior picture of the A-300 on our website, you can see the fans, mounted vertically, facing the heat sink.) I also had the wonderful sounding A 300 in my house, but i gave them back to my german dealer because the fans were constantly working though the unit was only getting as warm as my hands. Even if i switched the unit on, the fans did work. It was so loud that i heared it at my listening place 3,5 meters away. The other thing was that the power supply of the amp was making a loud mechanical noise. My last point of critic was that the A 300 was stinking very much like a new car. However, the sound was from heaven. My Review is here about the A 300: www.boards-4you.de/wbb10/1426/thread.php?threadid=1370&sid=a3567245870d3a3473eff546611a717aAfter that i bought the A-150 - this amp has no fan and creates a warmer sound in comparison to the A 300. I personally prefer the A 150 for my kind of Music (in first line Heavy Metal, Prog Metal, Power Metal). my review and longtime experiences with pictures are here: www.boards-4you.de/wbb10/1426/thread.php?threadid=1456&sid=a3567245870d3a3473eff546611a717aMy question would be, why do new amps of Emotiva smell so bad for some days? It smells like lacque. However, i am full of enthusiasm about Emotiva products and do love them! I also bought the Airmotiv T 2 Speakers and the TA-100 Receiver. My review of T 2 is beginning here: www.boards-4you.de/wbb10/1426/thread.php?postid=37167#post37167And my longtime experience with TA 100 is beginning here: www.boards-4you.de/wbb10/1426/thread.php?threadid=1371&sid=a3567245870d3a3473eff546611a717aAwesome products - amazing! Next month - if my dealer here in Germany and longyeared friend Martin Dittmeier gets the DR product-line i surely will write a test in my Forum and perhaps buy them of course, too. Cheers from Werner

Don't "send it in", take it back and have your dealer replace.

I have a BasX 300 and yes it is being repaired under warranty right now. It would not turn on. All mechanical things can fail. I have 100% confidence in Emotiva. Got an email from Emotiva service tech they replaced the ec5 ,ec6 and verified all modifications are up to date
Back to the fan. I have never heard my fan, nor have I ever smelled anything. Good luck

There are several pictures on the product page for the A-300 ( emotiva.com/product/a-300/ ). This one (copied below) is a top view. The fans are mounted next to each other, standing up on edge, just below the main heat sink. (As I said, they are thermostatically controlled, and normally very quiet - if they run at all.) To KeithL...where on the website? Can you provide a link? Thanks

Many modern materials make some slight odor until they have a chance to "breathe" for a while. That includes the paint or anodize on the casework, the anodize on the heat sinks, the plastic insulation on the wiring, and even some of the electronic components themselves. The exact amount of smell varies depending on the material involved, where and how it was stored, and even local weather conditions like temperature and humidity. Different people also find different ones to be more noticeable or more objectionable than others. Luckily, they are all essentially harmless, and pretty much all dissipate within a few days or weeks. (Some people even like them. They DO sell "new car smell in a can". ) I also had the wonderful sounding A 300 in my house, but i gave them back to my german dealer because the fans were constantly working though the unit was only getting as warm as my hands. Hello Keith,
one member of my german Emotiva Forum got last week his brandnew Emotiva A 300.
He has the Problem that his amp makes a mechanical fizzling noise from time to time like openening a beer bottle.
It is definitively not coming from the fans . The fans are not working.
Can you say if this is normal?
I fear that a capacitor could explode?
Cheers
Werner

drive.google.com/file/d/1xV1S8VOrWQbxVZD-q0daUWYMcX1pWKLv/view?usp=drivesdkHello! Bought yesterday Emotiva a-300, began to listen to it and after an hour of his work at medium volume, inside the amplifier there was noise. This noise comes from the fans. The fans themselves do not spin, but only twitch in place, and their motors make a nasty noise and squeak, which is clearly audible, especially in the pauses between tracks. What's it? Is it normal or a fail for this unit? I attach a link to the video with the recorded defect. I took three amps from my dealer, and they all have the same defect.

Is this the marriage of a particular amp? I attach a link to the video with the recorded defect. Sounds like you got a bad amp. The fans sound like they are locked up (it's weird for both of them to be doing that though). I have the A-300 and I have never heard any sound like that come from it. Call Emotiva and I'm sure they will swap it out for you.

It appears as though the fans are locked rotor. It looks like when the flashlight shines on them, that they try to turn and then stop (the fan protecting itself). It seems like these fans have a small electronic drive to turn the fan motor. The hissing sound is current limit on the fans. The sound is in sync with the fan movement (or lack there of)

Could be the power to the fans (common cause)

But at a comfortable volume level, they do not spin, but only twitch and make this nasty noise. This is the third amplifier with such a problem from our dealer. It's very similar to a defective batch.

Our distributor refuses to acknowledge this defect. He says it's normal. But as this may be the norm, if this noise prevents listen to music!? Can officials of the Emotiva comment on this situation?
