Hey everyone I am using the Airmotiv 6s for my left and right channels and I’d like to add a center. I can pick up a used 4s or stealth 6 locally. Would the 4s have enough volume to keep up with the 6s’? Would the stealth 6 be too much? Should I hold out for a 6s?

I'm probably not the best person to advise you on this because I'm primarily a 2-channel guy, but in general, the more alike the front 3 speakers are, the better the soundstage.

My 20 cents .............. use the Stealth 6's for the FL and FR and the pair of Airmotiv 6's as the centre (can't have too much centre).

I'd definitely not go with two 6's as a single center channel speaker. Grab one of their real center channel speakers, either the C1 or C2, and an amp, if you need amplification.

something silly, like > 70% of content in a movie is from the center channel, so you want a center that is just as, if not more so, robust as your FR/FL speakers.

I have set up system with 6 x Airmotive 6's and it sounds absolutely brilliant, don't knock it till you have tried it Cheers Gary

A comment I onde heard (and have come to agree with):
"For stereo, the only two important speakers are the front left & right, but for HT use, the only important speakers are the center channel and the subwoofer - everything else is just effects."

I listen to two 4s every day at work. They have surprising bass for being such little things, but I worry that in a larger space, they would not be able to even reproduce limited bass from the front, which might make male voices a bit off.

Thanks everyone.
Trey, that was my concern with the 4s as the center... not being able to fill the space.
Gary, I love the idea of the Stealth 6 for the L and R and a single 6S for the center.
I'm definitely leaning towards picking up the Stealth 6 for my center for now and if I find a good deal on one down the road picking up another.

I have healed the demons in this soul! FINALLY,,,,,,,LOL Ive preached this for ever. And while speakng of the center channel speaker and a sub or two, THE BIGGER THE BETTER😁🎶

The problem with using two speakers as a center channel is with lobing and dispersion as a result of the crossovers not being designed for close proximity. You will get massive hot and cold spots in the frequency response, and can test this by simply moving your head around your seating area with two speakers playing a mono signal sitting within a few inches of each other. The key is playing a mono signal. When they are playing a stereo signal, this is less of an issue.

I've heard the same thing about running a dual center. I wonder if you'd still have the same problem if you flipped one of the centers upside down. That way the woofers and tweeters wouldn't line up with each other.

Center channels, when placed horizontally, require very special attention to the midrange/tweeter and woofer crossover points, unless the drivers are oriented vertically. It is the horizontal orientation that causes the problems. This is why, you will often times see 3 way center channels with the midrante/tweeter oriented vertically and the woofers oriented horizontally. The issue is less important below about 500hz or so, and much more important above that point.

You'd be much better off with a single 6S as a center than you would with two of them playing a mono signal within close proximity. If you need more SPL or bass output than a 6S is capable of, check out Emo's C1 or C2

Yes, if you are using Airmotive 6 as front mains, use Airmotive 6 as center channel.

For my 5.1 room, the most expensive component was the center channel. As pknaz said, a majority of TV/Movie audio is usually sent to center. I was not at all concerned about timber matching since I sort of think the L/R sounds are often not voices but other sounds so I just bought a center that reproduced voices extremely well. My approach was best tool for the job but I think most people would think I am INSANE for not having timber matched speakers in a 5.1 system.

Agreed except for concert vids. Gotta say the L/R JTRs in the theater really bring it to life as much or more than the center. Scott
