Brown-out? Could it be that it turns off when a heavy load starts, i.e: air conditioner, dryer, electric oven, etc? Txs for the suggestion but I don’t think thats where the problem is. My cave is on two separate circuits.

Short trip to nutsville for me! My Samsung HU 8550 65” periodicallshuts off for no apparent reason. Its been doing this for some time now but Ive had about enough! All my HT gear is listed except for the Cable box ( TiVo PS 001 DST ). It doesnot shut down, only the TV. Its happened with both the Yamaha on and off , Im pretty sure. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I knew it was a Samsung......as soon as I read your topic headline.....needing service for sure. The caps go bad. Bill

Blew the dust out yesterday after the first suggestion. Ive had the tv on most of the day without incident. 👍 Hopefully my problem is fixed, otherwise I pay $80.00 for the extended warranty and have BB fix it. Don’t have the knowledge or ability to take it off the wall and work on it.
Would you now recommend the warranty?

To throw a log on this particular fire, in the last two weeks MY Samsung TV (8000 series) has started doing exactly the same thing. At random times, it just shuts itself off. It isn't too often (once or twice per day) and immediately after the shutdown, I can immediately restart the TV without incident (arguing perhaps against heat being a cause). This doesn't happen too much when the TV is being fed by the Cox Cable box (although it does happen sometimes), but is happening MUCH more frequently when being fed by the HDMI output of my Mac Mini.
My signal path is:
Mac Mini (running JRiver Media Center 24 & used as a music server) TO Arcam AVR550 surround sound receiver (where the music is picked up & amplified for the speakers) TO The Samsung TV via the AVR's HDMI output (video).
So the TV is being used as a monitor for the Mac Mini & a custom video resolution is being sent to make the screen legible from across the room.
My TV is MUCH newer than Nick's and has far less time on it. The ventilation holes are not dirty. There is no more than the normal amount of heat coming off the top of the TVs electronics section. The TV is mounted on an articulating wall mount away from the floor and its dust. The TV is still under warranty.
But before I call BestBuy, I'd like to identify the CAUSE of these shutdowns - it may not be the TV itself causing the issues. I'm currently powering the TV through an Emotiva surge-suppressor - should I try plugging it directly into the wall? Should I try feeding audio from the Mac Mini to the AVR with a different cable (optical TOSLINK, for example) and get the AVR out from between the Mac and the TV? Should I give up on modifying the native resolution of the TV and just let the window be tiny? Should I use a different HDMI cable?
Open to suggestions here...
Thanks - Boomzilla
PS: I just sent an hour on chat with the Cox Cable folks (who couldn't resolve their issues despite resetting my STB over the cable and having me power-cycle everything). They're sending a technician tomorrow to check out the system from their end. But unless something coming from the cable system is the culprit, this won't affect the Mac Mini to TV issues. Next step will be to contact Samsung service, Arcam service, and/or Apple service.

Do you have one of those Power Strips with a "Master" (Load-Sensing) Outlet, which when active switches power to all/some of the other outlets?
With a Low-Current device like a NEW LED-Illuminated TV and/or the Mac-Mini - perhaps it's now NOT pulling enough current to sufficiently / properly energize the other outlets? (I had a power strip like that on my PC, and when I upgraded - the new unit was more Energy-Efficient and gave me grief with the Power Strip, so I got a new UPS with a simpler non-switching arrangement.)

Guys, a simple google of this problem shows that lots of folks have it, even for new units: us.community.samsung.com/t5/TVs/TV-turning-off/td-p/12166Interesting that the capacitor issue resulted in a lawsuit and settlement.

I have had a Samsung 4K TV for almost a year and it hasn't randomly turned itself off so far. But damn ARC/CEC plays havoc, looking forward to 4K processing shortly to remove the need for that.
Cheers Gary

I've sent the Mac Mini not to go to sleep automatically. That may have fixed my problem.

Had the same issue with my Samsung 64" plasma. They are known for having marginal power supplies. I pulled the power supply and could not see any obvious issues with the caps. 3 years old and Samsung no longer makes the part. Bought an LG OLED. Check out Nicks TV repair in Tuscon AZ, they can diagnose and repair the PS board for a pretty reasonable price. Got mine fixed and gave the TV to my son.
Cheers.

I've sent the Mac Mini not to go to sleep automatically. That may have fixed my problem. But no - It shut itself off again last night after an hour or two of movies & music - no, the Mac Mini didn't go to sleep; no, the set wasn't excessively hot. That this happens exclusively while NOT on the Cox Box indicates that it's a local equipment issue, not a Cox Cable one.

I didn’t think it would have been the Mac Mini unless it was the 2012 model which doesn’t support 4K. The problem of it not being the cable box points more towards the Samsung tv and perhaps you should contact Samsung directly, hold time for support isnt bad at all when Ive called to ask a question a few times.

Hi novisnick - But since the TV never shuts itself off when playing cable TV, my conclusion is that neither the TV itself nor the cable box are the culprits. Nor do I get any shutdowns when watching movies from the Oppo. Both The Cox Cable box AND the Oppo are routed through the Arcam AVR, so I'm ruling it out as a cause as well. Shutdowns are ONLY happening when listening to JRiver audio over the new Mac Mini. I can watch YouTube, for example, for as long as I want from the Mac Mini without shutdowns. The signal path (when shutdowns happen) is: External USB HDD (where the JRiver Library resides) to the Mac Mini (where the JRiver server software resides) to the Arcam (via HDMI) and then to the TV (via HDMI). Control is via an Apple AirPort Express and JRemote running on an iPad mini. When a shutdown occurs, EVERYTHING shuts off - The TV goes off, the Mac Mini is powered off, the JRiver server (on the Mac Mini) is closed. The JRemote software is still running on the iPad, but it now has nothing to control. The Arcam (if I remember right) does NOT shut down (although I'll need to verify this the next crash).

Maybe the Mac Mini is going into standby or energy savings mode triggering the TV to shut down?
You may have already done this, but I’d turn off any inactivity timers in the MAC and TV.

Hi brubacca - Thanks - you're exactly right. I've already done those things, but they're excellent starting points!

I knew it was a Samsung......as soon as I read your topic headline.....needing service for sure. The caps go bad. Bill Samsung service or replacement.....sorry but this is the answer No crashes since I took the suggestion that the air vents may be clogged and I blew out the furr balls! LOL Samsung service on a 4 year old TV? Maybe Purchase a new TV will require somebody manufacturing a top of the line 4K / 3D 65” or larger. Maybe when Cameron films the sequel to Avitar. Ijust dont know how much it costs to incorporate 3D into a TV but I really don’t think the format is going anywhere, at least not in the theater. People still love seeing 3D at the movies and you can purchase all 3D movies via Amazon.UK.Com , but not here in the states. The ramble will now stop,,,,,,,,😁
