I just purchased an Elac Discovery which I am using as an endpoint only in my existing setup, but it is actually a server with a lifetime license to Roon Essentials built in, so for someone getting started it would be a one stop solution. Server and endpoint in one, just add media... That makes my Sonos look like a bargain! Mark

Just recalled...Emotiva talked about a thin client streaming solution at Emofest. It would, at a minimum, be an expansion module for the RMC-1 but they also mentioned a possible stand-alone solution. It would be really cool if it could be a Roon endpoint and output a digital signal in coax/optical/USB...or even come as an option with a DAC built-in. Make it a $25 price point and I'll buy a lot. LOL! (OK, maybe more...)

I am prepping to try out a Microrendu, thanks to a very kind lounge member who is loaning me one. Thank you sahmen I have a question about setup of Roon to use Roon with the Microrendu. I've read the Microrendu setup so I understand that - looks easy. My question is more about my options for the Roon software. My question is about "where to put the Roon core"? I have 2 options: 1) a dedicated hardwired PC with Windows 10 that meets all the requirements shown on the Roon website. I could put the core there and the remote on my Surface tablet to control the core and send tunes to the microrendu. 2) I also have the Surface tablet...it technically meets all the Roon technical requirements. Could I just put the core on my Surface (which will not be hardwired...wifi only) and use that for the core and to control? Thanks, Mark

Also during Roon setup it will ask you for any other compatible programs like Tidal or JRiver. Youll set those up at this time too. Its really easy. Take 5 minuets and read “How Roon Works” Have fun, let me know how it goes or if you need help. Plenty of friends here to help,

Plenty of friends here to help, I read that and searched more broadly on the internet...can't find the answer to my question. I guess a more fundamental question is "does the device the Roon Core is on have to be hardwired?" If the answer is "yes", then I'll put it on a PC and use the Surface as the remote. (And, I've searched all over including the Roon knowledge base to find an answer to that question also). Mark

PS - I also just sent that question to the Roon support group...we'll also see what they say. Mark I think hardwiring is always preferable (although, not strictly necessary) when it comes to the core, and how it connects to the network and also to the unit that stores your local files.

It all depends on the size and speed of your network. Hard wired Ethernet is always preferable for network music, but there is no reason why a wireless connection would not work as long as you don't try to exceed your available bandwidth.

I'll just do wired to be safe...no sense to try to optimize during the trial period. My wired network is gigabit, and this is what my wifi is doing right now: Mark

Mac Mini and my Brookly have been working wonderfully with Roon together. Integration has been easy. Just the beginning of all the things Roon can do. The community is really helpful and so are our frinds on this forum. Genre selection is broad and easy to use. I do wish scimming through Tidal Masters was a bit easier, like Mark said going across instead of down isn’t natural. Search functions as it should and all the medadata is fun.

A benefit of Roon I haven't mentioned is the rediscovery of great music I forgot about AND new music I didn't know existed. The latter is due to Tidal's integration into Roon.

klinemj I'm running the Core on a Mac Mini connected via wifi and have never had issues. My home network is on the robust side of things and my place is small with none of the issues that compromise some wifi signals. If you think about how many people are using an Apple TV, Fire TV Stick, Chromecast, Roku, etc for 1080p video, most music files don't consume as much bandwidth. I am now ready for a reply about how Octuple-rate DSD streams over wifi consume tremendous bandwidth and having a wirelessly connected Roon Core is a bad idea. Okay, whatever.

I'm still not getting Roon...
Seriously, If you don't subscribe to "hi-res" (rates over 16/44), and your listening is 99.5% Tidal hifi (16/44) or Tidal MQA, is there any point to Roon?
Or is it mostly about integration of your own collection with Tidal?
Thanks,

Loop 7 and others who might be interested - I did get an official answer from Roon on my question about wifi and my Surface Pro 3, and they did confirm it would not be an issue. So, consistent with your experience. I do think, as you say, that having a robust network would be helpful! Mark

Also, for someone just starting out, it's easy to set up and has a nice interface. Mark
