Some misc thoughts;
.......... There are separate component FM tuners (some have AM also). FM or AM/FM tuners also come in stereo or surround receivers and also in pre-pros like the XMC-1.
.......... The quality of the FM sound is dependent on: #1 The quality of the FM tuner itself (many factors) . 2# The closeness of the FM transmission tower. Short distance line of sight to the tower is best. Long distances (typically 10-50 flat miles or so is OK). Hills, mountains, large bldgs, and other straight line obstructions are not good. #3 The quality/strength of the signal, this can very a lot from station to station.
.......... There are many very good separate tuners from the 60's, 70's and 80's plus. Many of the Japanese tuners from Sony, Kenwood/Trio, Sansui, Panny/Technics, Luxman, Pioneer, Nakamichi, Akai, and other brands are very good. Plus tuners from the west, Marantz, Mac, Revox, I could go on and on and list many very high end units also. Thru the 70's and 80's or so the FM tuners in many good quality receivers were very good. In the late 70's brand were fighting on who had the best tuner specs. Unfortunately in the 90's or so the FM units in receivers started a nose dive. Many FM tuners now in receivers are mediocre at best.
.......... The new FM-HD tuners in some cars like my unnamed cheap-ass new Italian car with an HK tuner put out some excellent sound. I am in a suburb of Seattle with a number of hills and some stations are so so but a number of them are very impressive. I do not play music when driving but do when in the parking lot, engine off, while she is shopping. FM-HD, rock, pop, country and classical, I pick up and lock on about 27 stations with great sound. My default speaker system when not competing with the Ferrari designed engine and exhaust system noises sounds marvelous to my former audiophile ears. We are fortunate in Seattle with some very good FM stations. Some of the SiriusXM stations that came included with my new car were actually very good and some were mediocre. I did not renew the service.
.......... Many folks even relatively close to a metropolitan city still need a good indoor or outside FM antenna at home. That is a subject to itself.
.......... An alternative for some good FM sound can be found on cable TV boxes in the higher channel numbers. We get some very good sound thru our Xfinity/Comcast system that we play thru our main Emotiva system.
.......... Years ago my girlfriend had a very good FM stereo system at her place. She helped me erect the antenna. I would thus stay overnight with her so in the morning we could listen to some really nice romantic music while we ate together in bed.
Fine
