OK - I'll bite - WTF is a "sotm product?" You don’t get YouTube on your computer do you? OR you just refuse to watch any videos that I’ve posted. Perhaps a personal invite my friend... I follow youtube links in direct proportion to the amount if interest I have in that video at that particular moment. If I'm not interested at the time the link comes by on my screen, it falls out of my short-term memory cache and effectively no longer exists. Should I become interested in the topic of that particular video at some later date, I'd have to go through multiple threads on the board to find that original link again, so I just ask for it anew. Yes, I could use a Google search instead of ProBoards' incredibly lame search function, but, of course, I've displaced the format needed for such a search. What can I say - I just got dain-bramage...

...devices like the rendu series and the sotm products... OK - I'll bite - WTF is a "sotm product?" While Nick answered for me (it's the company that makes the network player he bought), I think Chuck's answers were better, even if not correct. Mark

OK - Since there are multiple products in this field (magic-box network conditioners), has anyone done a comparison survey - Schiit vs. Micro-Rendu vs. Audioquest vs. SOtM vs. "naked" USB?

This, my last video posted has a comparison. Therefore I know you haven’t watched it yet! Bahahahaha! emotivalounge.proboards.com/post/965254Ill send you $10.00 if after viewing it you claim you didn’t learn anything.

Although Nick responded also, I will add my twist. The Schiit and Audioquest devices you noted only claimed to clean up USB streams. The devices Nick and I talk about are essentially computers stripped of all but they need to do a basic job: take direction from a software that selects specific music to play from a source (like a NAS or Tidal or other...) and pull a digital signal from a CAT 5 cable, and then output it to a USB output. This is not a "magic-box network/USB conditioner". It's a tiny computer. Neither of the devices you tried fit that description or have the capability I noted. Again, I cannot tell you "why" this approach sounds so good, but so far I have heard a microRendu and an ultraRendu in my system and heard massive difference. And, I heard a Signature Rendu SE in another person's system and I also heard a massive difference. As chicagorspec noted...he heard the difference within seconds. Net, I heard it with Sonore's low end, medium end, and high end network player options. I have not heard the SOtM products. Also recall...I was a skeptic. I am shocked. Don't equate this topic with the other devices you tried. Be open to something new and stop thinking of it as just some USB trick. Mark (PS - still willing to try the ripping test we talked...skeptic, but I am open to the possibility)

I would not rule out the possibility that a computer/player might actually change the bits by doing some sort of actual processing. (For example, HQPlayer offers a choice of several up-sampling styles and filter algorithms.)

Mark (PS - still willing to try the ripping test we talked...skeptic, but I am open to the possibility) Frankly, whatever it is doing is awesome. When Carole King's voice goes from sounding like she was singing into a coffee can to sounding like I am sitting in the front row...that's a good thing. And, the fact that nothing sounds worse, the awful stuff sounds much better, and even good things sound a little better is just delightful. That's another way of saying "I really don't care how or why it does it...I just like it". Mark

OK - If there's no comparison available between the Micro-Rendu products and the SOtM ones, which are less expensive? If an inexpensive "proof of concept" device convinces me of its merit, then I'd be more open to the more expensive options.

Boomzillamicrorendu: $640 ultrarendu: $875 SOtM SMS-200 ultra: $1200 signature rendu SE: $3295 All but the last require you buy a power supply also. Some buy the uptone LPS-1 but I listened to it and Small Green Computer's power supply that works with the Micro and UltraRendu and found it as good as the uptone LPS-1. (you buy the rendu's via Small Green Computer, so the power supply is listed there and you often get a bundle deal.) From my listening, I'd reco the ultrarendu as a starting point. I'd love to hear a signature rendu SE and SOtM SMS-200 ultra in my system. I think the signature rendu SE is better than my ultra based on listening at chicagorspec's house. Mark

Sheeeeeeet - For those prices, I can BUILD a better power supply than they're selling, and for a WHOLE lot less money!
I read the Dutchman's review of the SOtM, but he himself admits that he's not technical enough to explain it - he just thinks it sounds good. His speculation is that the device(s) are minimizing jitter.
So here's my bottom line:
Option 1 - I'll ask for a review sample - If I'm impressed enough, then I'll pony up for one. Option 2 - I'll wait. If these devices truly improve sound as much as youse guys say, then Emotiva's going to come out with one for a fraction of the prices currently being charged. Option 3 - I'll do without - Actually, my system's sounding pretty sweet as is...
At the moment, I just don't have the spare change for such a purchase.

I predict #3.
And, the power supply from SGC is just $140 typically when bundled with a Rendu. Also, iFiPower offers some very good power supplies for $49. Or build your own.
But, go ahead and get a rendu...like the ultra. They sound really good...

Boom What are youbuilding a PS for? 1) I’ve already suggested that you request a review sample. 2) the sound is improved and yes We Say So! TRULY. 😁 Emotiva won’t be coming out with this class of gear IMHO 1)😢 Sadly, do without. And I doubt your system has this kind of sound and resolution. Though Im sure it sounds nice as you have most of your ears left! LOL Yep, the coinage is a little steep! Nick

Can’t beat that offer from Nick!
Also if you’ve decided you’d like to try a specific unit, keep your eyes out in the usual places for used units. Like most of my equipment, I bought my Signature Rendu SE and my SGC sonictransporter server used, less than a year old, both at just over half retail. Enjoy the journey.

I suspect there are yet other differences related to that up the line, but they do not elaborate. Still, I heard differences across their lineup. Again not sure why, but... Mark
