Hello all,
Over the last few weeks (Almost) a month now Ive been trying to purchase a new set of Magnepan 1.7i's. The only dealer close enough to me which I leave unnamed seams to be running me around. The only 2 other dealers here in Michigan are almost a 3 hr drive for me. I took my Dynaco VTA ST-120 amp down with me and his salesman was nice enough to set it up for me with their floor models. After listening to the first two songs I was sold. Demo disk Burmester (art for the ear). It was an easy sale for him. I spent more time waiting for him to help another customer with his turn table. His name is Jay. A very nice guy. He took my name and phone number and told me it would be about a two week wait for them to get them in. Also the trim color and color of the socks. I was ready to pay then and there but he told me not till after they came in and I pick them up. Well its been about 4 weeks now and Ive called maybe 4 times to get an update. Every time I call I get the owner and he even tells me to call back to find out. Every time I call him he tells me how busy he is and he keeps forgetting. WTF? Im starting to lose interest in the whole thing. I do like the speakers and would like to get them. Do I really need them? No but Id still like to have them. Anybody have suggestions on how to handle this?
Thanks Fritz

IIRC, mine took a good 4-5 weeks to get to the dealer. They were worth the wait.

If I was you I would wait! Of course I am being biased 🙂. What can you order them direct from Magnepan?

Thanks Hardwired, Good to hear you like them. I just called him again cause he told me earlier today to call him back and he will find out the status. Guess what, He said he forgot AGAIN! was all apologetic and said to call him back tomorrow. Man I'm starting to feel sorry for this guy. I keep telling him I'm sorry for bothering him and he says that's ok he understands. At this point I don't know who more sorry! LOL sh** I just want to get these and be done with it. To bad I cant just buy direct.

Hey pedrocols, I see you know what I heard! lol They did sound sweet. I've got the Schitt Bifrost multibit as well. Similar systems. I did call Magnepan to see if I could buy direct and he told me though dealer only. He does know the dealer I'm trying to go though and said if I wanted he would call him to see what the problem is. I told I didn't want to rock the boat and that I would like to call him back cause he seems like a nice guy. But that was like 3 calls ago. Don't get me wrong cause its not like I'm calling him everyday. Only when he tells me to call him back but damn he's forgetful.

If you are anywhere near Kalamazoo I highly recommend John @ Kazoo Audio. I bought my first set of "Pans" from him nearly 35 years ago and can vouch for him as a stand up guy--not to mention the advantage of dealing directly with the owner!

I'd look for another dealer for sure. Or, perhaps - go into your dealer and say "Look, I called Magnepan and got through. How about right now you and I call them and you place my order? And, I do mean 'now'..."

Busy almost okay. Forgetting you? Never. Go to Magnepan direct. I did and the service was great. If you wonder why in some cases the audio store is dying, the guy you dealt with is one reason why. Service in a timely efficient manner always. Accept nothing less. I was in High End retail for over 15 years, and what your store did was inexcusable. I would have been firing some people for poor service like that. As a store you have to try harder than ever to deliver great service. If you don't. Someone else will. Simple as that.

Making a LOT of assumptions here - Don't know the dealer's side of this... May have placed the order immediately & Magnepan's sold out or slow in making more? First order may have been destroyed in Winter storm truck accident? The only thing that CAN be concluded from the info so far is that someone (Maggie or dealer) isn't so good at communicating.

Given the dealer said "I forgot" more than once, I am doubting the issue is on Magnepan's side. In any case, what I suggested should clear matters up and get things rolling. Mark

The new LRS has spiked demand but that is no excuse for the dealer's behavior. Magnepan was, back when I worked for a dealer, very picky about their dealers and customer service; I doubt that has changed. I would let Magnepan know. Amazingly, after all these years, they now have an email address!

Plus when he called Magnepan, they would know if an order was placed from the dealer and what the status was since they knew the dealer. Instead, Magnepan wanted to call the dealer.

We got a dealer that doesn't want to take the money. What kind of rare breed is this?

Incompetent. Not every dealer is. Order online, you know you want them and the "dealer" does not deserve any commission.

We got a dealer that doesn't want to take the money. What kind of rare breed is this? It’s unbelievable how screwed up some of those dealerships were (past tense because the ones I dealt with are long gone) Not take the money....one of those situations worked out most decidedly in my favor.

I'm beginning to wonder who the "dummy" is here Fritz: (I don't mean this in a MEAN way - more of a "Come On, Man!" sort of way)
It's ONE thing to be nice / be patient (I'm just like you in this regard)
But it's a whole 'nother THING to allow yourself to be a HEEL (There HAS to be limits)
I would give this guy an ultimatum that he has 24-HOURS to get back to you with an accurate Status on the Order. I would also let him know that you plan to call the manufacturer and if you are not satisfied with further ACTION, you will raise a stink with Magnepan about the P-POOR service from Dealer X and suggest that they should consider if they want their products represented by such a boob
Depending on what part of Michigan you're in - if you feel up to a drive to Milwaukee, check-out Audio Emporium. I know that they've been a long-term Maggie dealer. (I wonder if THEY could have the speakers drop-shipped directly to you?)

Trey Unfortunately, the only Maggie you can buy online from the factory is the new LRS (little ribbon speaker), replacing the MMG models, at $650/pair with 60-day trial. I love my modded MMG's and am curious about the LRS improvements, if any; has anybody on the forum purchased or heard a pair?

I currently have the MG12 and 1.7 both with "upgraded" crossovers and despite all the hype about modded older magnepans models, the MG12 are the ones in my closet collecting dust. The 1.7 is better to my ears. I would also expect the new mmg to be also better than the older one.
