Excellent! I am happy it ended up working out. I've loved mine since day 1. My Maggies ruined me for most other speakers. Mark

Well Guys, Finally got them and did a quick setup. Heres some pics. Thanks for all the support and comments! Only been listening for about half hour now. First impression, these suckers are smooth for lack of better explanation. Congrats and so happy to see you got the speakers you wanted, I just have to ask if these are the new wireless models as I don't see any cables Chad LOL, Here ya go Chad. Was just taking pics as I moved them around. Kimber Kable 8tc

Congrats fritz! Nothing really to say on the rest. I will comment that I have the technical knowledge and resources to design, or redesign, the crossover to meet stock specs and to change it when I wanted (e.g. higher slopes). I have seen a ton of really bad mods by people who did not know what they were doing nor the nature of unintended consequences -- like parallelling caps when that was all the rage and shifting the crossover by an octave or so! At least I made money fixing them up...

Really nice to see that front wall done up with treatments. My wife finally let me do the front wall because I picked out artsy panels. Scott

Great looking set up you got there. I love the room treatments and the dual sub offers. I bet it sounds phenomenal

With your Maggies bouncing half their output off the front wall, you might rethink the sound absorbers.....and that close together try the tweeters outside.

Thanks all. I'm enjoying them immensely. Bill, I will defiantly be trying different things. Right now they sound so sweet and I'm not even sitting in front of them. Puter sits to the other side of the room. Its hard to put your finger on it but they are much more relaxing and engaging than the B&W's. The CDM-9NT's are now dedicated to home theater. So far right out of the box the Maggies are sounding pretty dang sweet. They sound so clean that I find myself wanting to turn up the attenuator on my ST-120. Nice combo. Have been contemplating getting another ST-120 for bi amping them. One for each channel. For now my question is this. How far can I push the VTA ST-120. Right now I'm at about the 4 o'clock position on the attenuator knob. How do I know I'm pushing to hard? Does not sound like I'm clipping at all. Any comments welcome. Thanks

Give 'em 20 or 30 hours.....maybe a little more.
Than you can do a DETAILED setup.
There are 4 ways to align the speakers. Tweeter IN or OUT.......Than you can also put the pole piece to the listener and do tweeter IN or OUT....again.
Back in the early 90's or so, Magnepan changed the INTENT and went with pole piece to the BACK of the speaker after years the other way. With my MG-1s, the intent was to listen to the pole piece side.
During my weeks-long testing, I had several results. Some setups lasted 1 minute or less. Other setups lasted a day or more. As I learned more, my setups got better.
Find a place to measure. Keep track of setups so when you finally find the REALLY sweet spot, you can go back to it with just a ruler. I'd use one of the hard edges on the side as my index.
As good as it it NOW, I'm certain you can improve the setup. Maybe not 'dramatic' but certainly better and more enjoyable.

Don,
the new X.7 series Magnepan I think ALL use a Series Crossover. This is a particular bit of Magnepan weirdness which is not very DIY 'friendly'.
You might get away with something like.....for my 1.6s.....changing the 22ufd in the crossover to 3 @ 6.8uf and 1 @ 1.5uf.....I think all standard values.
Given most caps are 10% or even 20%, buying a better spec'd part, should put you in the 'good zone'....at least as far as capacitance goes.
How's that going to shift the crossover by an Octave...or so?
But as far as big changes to a Series Crossover? I'd be comfortable with staying with stock cap values, but be REAL careful with any inductors I encountered.

How's that going to shift the crossover by an Octave...or so? But as far as big changes to a Series Crossover? I'd be comfortable with staying with stock cap values, but be REAL careful with any inductors I encountered. My tech experience with them was in the 1980's or so and I have not fooled with them much since then. That is, I have tried to keep current and listen to them now and then, but have not gotten back into modifications. My MG-IIIa's use an external crossover box making it easy to implement an active system for bass and mid/tweeter (two-way). I did not go inside mine to tri-amp but did it for numerous others. I did not think it made as big a difference going from bi-amping to tri-amping so never did it on my personal pair. YMMV. The particular issue I cited was a user who bought some big fancy caps the same values as the ones in the crossover and figured he'd get twice the performance by using them in parallel with the crossover caps. So he doubled the capacitance. Ignorance is not always bliss... Magnepan has essentially taken away the ability to easily bi-amp the speakers with x.7 lineup, at least if you want to bypass the internal crossover. As I said, years ago, and I did the analysis and measurements when I changed crossovers. That is, hand calculations and SPICE for simulations, followed by measurements using a VNA, spectrum analyzer, measurement mic (B&K then, Earthworks M30 now), and anechoic chamber. I was blessed to have the ability and resources to do it right. But frankly as long as you are reasonable about things you are not going to shift frequencies hugely. It's just the modders who really had no clue what they were doing and deviated far from the basic instructions that really mucked things up. Most of the repairs I made were from modders who slipped and holed the panels, sometimes with a soldering iron, or dropped the speakers when laying them down and blew the ribbon tweeter. And several times a year I was replacing ribbons for customer who vacuumed the speaker socks... Mods often, though not always, resulted in measurable changes. In blind tests it was very rare anyone could tell stock from modded Maggies. Sighted, whole 'nuther story... The only mod I found to consistently pass detection was switching to an active crossover (or passive line-level crossover) and bi-amping. FWIWFM -- your mileage will vary! - Don

Magnepan issues the speakers with ribbon covers so when moved you don't wreck the ribbon.
Sounds like you've seen most screw-ups a DIY guy could make, at least once!
Like what they taught in soldering school.......'The Bigger the Blob, the Better the Joh'.........
