I purchased a Roku Ultra this past weekend. Wow! I will never have another cable bill. Everything you can’t think of is available.

I'm loving my decision to cut the cord and go Roku (With Hulu Live and Netflix also).

I have had a Roku for what is seems forever 😁. First a Roku HD 720p, now a Roku Premier+ 4k. Never had cable, always lived off OTA HDTV, later on supplemented by the Roku. When we got our first the "channel" offering wasn't nearly as broad as it is now. Believe it or not, there wasn't even an official app for YouTube (the horror! 😆)
What I like the most about the Roku is that it is an "agnostic" platform, not tied to any content provider.

Roku and Apple TV are the premier streaming units. (Roku is far ahead with choices however especially if you side load) www.rokuguide.com/private-channelsMake sure your proper display and audio settings are correct. Auto doesn't always get it right.

I've had Roku devices on all of my TV's for years. They provide tons of programming options, not pushing one over another, they have a very easy to use interface and remote, and they work.

I just ordered the ROKU ultra today. Ive about had it with the cable providers around here. I just canceled my service with WOW wide open west. I had to call every other month and literally argue with them about raising my monthly bill all the time! They had me up to 180.00 a month and all I had was basic cable and 60 meg download speed that never made that. Every time id call and wait 20 mins to talk to someone then it was always someone from Guatemala and I couldn't even understand what they were saying half the time. Id ask to be transferred back to the states and every one of them would tell they couldn't do that (they would literally lie to me) and eventually they would finally switch me over so I could at least discuss my billing with someone that I could understand. Then they would tell me for 150.00 a month IF I SIGNED A 2 YEAR AGREAMENT WITH PAPERLESS BILLING AND AUTO PAY they would lower and not even what I was paying for last year. My discounts ran out! LOL
Now that I just let them shut down the line Im sure they will come back and tell me I owe them 500 bucks. This is such a wide spread scam how is it that companies like this even exist? I just signed up with Spectrum. The salesperson on the phone assured me it would be 124.89 a month for Basic with free HD stations (HD is free anyway) and 200 meg download speeds. I got my first email bill and its already 130.00 a month. WTF! I had them come today and run another line to my house and he just tapped into the same wiring that I have throughout the house that I had to redo from the so called installers from WOW. sh** Im a lot better than the guys they send out. Hope I like ROKU once I figure it out.

Hope I like ROKU once I figure it out. I switched from Spectrum to Roku (with Hulu Live for live TV) and love it. FYI, get ready for fun switching off Spectrum. I had the usual long wait to talk to a human, then once I did - they repeated grilled me on why I was leaving and made offer after offer trying to keep me before they finally just did what I said. It took over an hour, and I had to keep saying "no, I'm not interested - just do what I asked please". Then it got really fun...my next bill came and they had not cancelled my service and claimed I had not returned my gear. But, I had kept the receipt just in case of that! For some reason, they claim someone had instructed them to un-cancel my services (not true - at least from our house), so I had to go through the same thing again to re-cancel my service. But this time, they pestered me more about staying and kept making new offers to try to get me to stay. I just shouted over them "no, do what I asked". Then, they claimed they could not credit all 36 days they'd overcharged, so the lady had to get extra help from a higher level to authorize the 6 days she could not credit by herself. It took me, in all, over 2 hours to cancel Spectrum. It took me 15 minutes to have a Roku running with all channels I wanted installed and running. Making a change to my Hulu account (to add more channels and unlimited streaming) took 2 minutes. My wife added the Hallmark channel last night, and it took <1 minute. High quality, no hassle, great content, great price. Very happy. Mark

Question.
If I go this route, I believe I would need to get the Ultra box. My TV only passes 2 channel (not DD 5.1) back from its Toslink connection. So the only way to get surround sound is to hook the Roku Ultra to my processor, then the processor to the TV, all via HDMI. Does this sound right?
How do all you Roku folks have yours connected?

I run ethernet to the Roku then HDMI to my processor. The processor then sends the signal to the TV via HDMI

Question. If I go this route, I believe I would need to get the Ultra box. My TV only passes 2 channel (not DD 5.1) back from its Toslink connection. So the only way to get surround sound is to hook the Roku Ultra to my processor, then the processor to the TV, all via HDMI. Does this sound right? How do all you Roku folks have yours connected? Sounds mostly right to me. I have 3 TVs that a Roku goes straight to, but for my main system - I have a Roku Ultra feeding HDMI output to my XMC-1. That said - I believe you could plug any of the other Roku's into an HDMI input on your pre/pro. Said another way, you would not have to have an Ultra. However, I got Ultras for all locations for which I could run a cat 5 line out direct to the Roku. The Ultra is their only model that takes a cat 5 input. All the others are wireless only. I've got one wifi-based Roku Streaming Stick+ on one TV, and it's a bit sluggish in responding relative to the hardwired Ultras. It's also furthest from my router, so that may be the issue. The Ultra can also take wifi inputs, but I've not tried that with them. I did find the SS+ works better if I use wall power instead of USB power (might be a limitation of the TV's USB port). The SS+ comes with the parts to either use USB power or wall power. Mark

I have the roku's hooked into an hdmi input on the pre amp processor, and video screens hooked to the hdmi outputs on the preamp/proc. That delivers full dolby digital surround sound on channels that offer it. Most channels, but not all, do.

I’m doing the free trial on YouTube TV thru my on board Sony tv app and the local channels are all now coming thru at 2.0. The website that I was viewing a comparison on the streaming services says you don’t get but 2.0 on a lot of the channels. Are you guys getting 5.1 on the local channels and ESPN, etc? Does the Roku work differently than my Sony smart TV apps? I sure hope so...
