well..I bought the pieces over many years, and update and replace pieces on a fairly consistent level. What gets replaced most often is the processor part...the part that is now almost always built into the pre amp or receiver. I used to buy surround processors as a separate component.
My Thiel speakers I have owned since 1993 when that model first came out. That model stayed in the Thiel line until 2008 when it was replaced with the 3.7...which goes for over 12 grand a pair.
If I look at what I have in that system now...I have 3 stereo Threshold Power amps..the newest one being from 1993. Plus the several month old XPA-5. The turntable is from 1980 or there abouts, and the Velodyne subs from 1994. I do have a 1994 vintage Threshold T2 stereo fully balanced preamp still in the system. The signals to the Threshold Sa/4e and my Thiels actually are still routed through it.
I use the balanced output from the main channel preamp of my Integra pre pro to runto a balanced input of the T2. I keep the T2 at a predetermined volume setting that I have done all of my speaker setup with. The balanced output of the T2 is then fed to the balanced input of the SA/4e.

What's really cool is when you've finished ripping your music collection to your Squeezebox and you are going around selecting songs at random as you lounge in your couch and suddenly... Oh yeah! I forgot about that song! And it sounds so much better than you've ever heard it before. And then you add it to your favorites so you never forget about it again.

Music or movies... Music or movies... decisions decisions... they're both so great.... Explosions or instruments and vocal.... Thunderstorms that make you look outside and check the sky... Do not buy Emotiva if you not prepared to make these kinds of tough decisions... You have been warned.

a good recording ripped to MP3 can still sound good..especially if it's one of the higher bit rate mp3 flavors. I think the top one is 320 kbps. A bad recording is still going to sound bad if you rip it into a lossless format Any music will sound better on your emotiva gear than it did on your previous setup.

I haven't turned on the TV tonight which is very, very, rare for me. I'm simply enjoying the music too much.
What I have learned about the Emo experience is that you don't just hear the music, you feel it.
For a while tonight I turned my RX-V663 to "Pure Direct" and it was just me, my music, my two 8.3s, and my XPA-5. And life was good.
There has been poor source material exposed in the course of my listening but such is the price of accuracy.
It is difficult to find the words to express in words how much more enjoyable music/moves are in the post Emo era.
For a while I had only the improvement of the HDTV and I was awe struck by the improvement in picture quality and it remains so, but now when I am experiencing Home Theater it is not the video that commands my attention but the sound.

wait a min...now the post my one above this was responding to disappeared. I made a post about MP3s and after posting it I realized the source material was not MP3 based after all so I deleted it, revised it to reflect reality, and reposted it. You were too fast for me! ;D

So I was searching my Squeezebox for music tonight and happened across "Seasons in the sun" by Terry Jacks. It is a song that always evoked feelings of spring fever for me. Must of been that time of year when it came out. I don't know.
Anyway, I tell Squeezebox to output to Emotiva and it does. I am taken back to days as a teenager listening to music on my battery operated portable radio cassette player that I carefully selected at Walgreens.
I remember thinking that someday I would be able to listen to these great songs on a really great stereo. I remember how unsatisfied I was with the system I bought in 1988.
I smiled to myself knowing that at the age of 47 someday had finally arrived. Thanks staff of Emotiva. It really does add to my enjoyment knowing how relatively little I spent for this level of quality. There is absolutely no thought of is it worth it.

The emotional aspect of music is tough to put a price on. Like you - I have never looked back at what I've spent with Emo and wondered if I overpaid... or if I should have shopped around more, etc. Great stuff! I'll have to look up that song... I don't own it and now you have me curious

wow...you shopped at the high end audio stores back then. I do know what you mean though when I isten to music on my systems now that I first heard when I was a teen on far less capable audio systems. When I was in high school I invested in a new stereo that I bought at Target. It was from Lloyds and I remember paying 69 bucks for it with two speakers. One of those speakers used to rattle every time it played a bass note. I stuck some putty in some of the cabinet seams to try to fix that. I never had to do that with my Thiels or Magnepans.

One of my buddies used to make fun of that song as he would mimic a guy singing that song with tubes crammed down his nose and throat.

It was kind of a guilty pleasure. Here ya go:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pfm-17pu6SQ Who sang the "Shannon" tune which came out around the same time period? You know the one...it's the one with the verse,"as she quietly drifts out to sea"(the song was a about a dog, btw). Nevermind. OMG, I found it on youtube: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jxz2wQX3EvAAnd how can anyone who grew up in the 70's forget this "classic":http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jxz2wQX3EvA

Sorry, but "Seasons in the Sun" is on my list of 5 worst songs of all time.. ever. Other picks: "Half Breed" by Cher (that warbling voice of hers tortures my eardrums) "Loving You" by Minnie Ripperton (she could only sing that high if they had connected her to a high voltage battery) "Lion Sleeps Tonight" by The Tokens and (tie) anything by Kenny G. or Abba. ;D

And why are you singling me out when monkumonku ranks it as one of the worst songs of alltime?

Nothing against you but I just don't like that song! (I'm sure people would say the same about some of the stuff I listen to as well..)

I am posting to offer my apologies to you. Nothing against you but I just don't like that song! No problem. It's just that the next time I hear it I want it to bring back the fond memories. I don't want it to conjure up thoughts of "Why do those guys dislike it?" Now back to the fun of us discussing our great Emo gear.

Music is subjective as hell anyway so you'll always have at least a couple of people who think your musical preferences are nuts. It goes with the territory. I didn't really intend to insult you so I apologize if it came off that way. That tune invokes nice memories for me as well...songs from teenage years. I laughed when I saw Terry's hair in that youtube clip. Ya gotta love the 70's
