For such a heavy sub (80lbs) and powerful amp why didn't y'all go for the airmotiv 15" driver?

For such a heavy sub (80lbs) and powerful amp why didn't y'all go for the airmotiv 15" driver? Thanks for asking! A number of reasons.... the primary being: Size Linearity Effective moving mass The 13” driver is capable of very high linear excursion and has a very low moving mass. The entire voice coil assembly is aluminum. Also, the woofers suspension is very compliant and is minimally “lossy”. Great transient response and linearity! Also, the tall double roll surround maximizes come area. You have to hear this sub to believe it. It’s remarkable. Fast, super deep, and articulate. And it’s built like a tank. It’ll shake your pant legs and at the same time deliver wonderful transient response. It integrates beautifully with the main loudspeakers. So, that’s our thinking... Cheers, Big Dan

Can’t wait to see some reviews on this sub. My first thought would be to compare it to the Monolith 15 which has a little more output, but may not be as tight being a 15” compared to a 13” (also the monoliths are huge boxes and these subs seem to be much more compact).

The sub looks very impressive with specs to match! After reading the product page, I am confused about the two curve settings, Flat and Deep.
It looks to me like the Deep setting goes both lower and is flatter than the Flat setting, so why call the Flat, "Flat" if the Deep is flatter? (who's on first?) And since the Deep goes both lower and is flatter, why wouldn't you just use that all the time?

It appears to be a nice sub from the specs and features. It'll be interesting how it measures up to similarly priced offerings from the likes of SVS, Monolith and Hsu.

We just came back from Emotiva after having my XPA-2 upgraded to and XPA-3. While we were there Dan took us back to listen to the new sub. Some excerpts from Interstellar and an X-Men movie were played and I gotta say this sub is impressive. Very powerful, clean and low. No signs of any stress at all and it remained smooth, clean and punchy no matter how loud he played it. We didn't listen to any music but I'm confident it would do just fine. Damon also demoed the A1's in reflective mode and although the room we were in has an absorptive 9' ceiling they did better than I would have expected. Not as good as the same speakers mounted at the ceiling but definitely added to the height effect. We bought a pair to try out sometime in the near future. We have 8' drywall ceilings so they should be at least as good as what we heard at Emotiva.

I'm also really curious about these subs, I have a pair of 18" Dayton's in sealed boxes powered by an Inuke 6k and of course I want more... I guess I need to take some readings from my current setup with REW so that I can copare the specs... I also still wonder about servo subs... I'm hoping to make it out to Axpona this year and hopefully will be able to hear them... If they sound as good as they look on paper and there are the usual show specials it could be another expensive trip to Chicago

I work 2 min from that hotel. But unfortunately I bought a SVS PB16 ultra on Black Friday but this sub does look good!

Has anyone here used this sub in a stereo (music) configuration, if so what are your impressions?
I am considering putting 2 of them in my main system but because my main speakers go down to 20hz I am not sure there is much to gain other than distribute some of the lows and power.

These subs are fantastic for music!
I've done extensive listening to music on the subs, and I love they way they integrate with the mains. They have incredible slam and speed without the feeling of overhang or bloat. They are extremely capable and provide extension and authority that you just cannot get from a full range loudspeaker.
These subs have a very low mass moving system, so transient response is excellent and distortion is low. They are very "unlike" most HT subs in this regard. The entire moving motor assembly is done in aluminum to reduce mass. That is, the voice coil wire is copper clad aluminum and the voice coil former is aluminum. The cone assembly has been designed for low weight with excellent compliance and linear behavior.
As a side note, keeping extremely low frequencies out of your mains has huge benefits sonically, even if they are designed play "full range". I'm sure you're aware of this, but thought I'd throw it in...
Try 'em, you'll like 'em! Cheers, Big Dan

Its a pity that Axpona didnt happen I was really hoping to hear these subs in person... I keep thinking I should take some REW measurements from my current setup (dual sealed 18 daytons with an inuke 6k) to see how these compare at least on paper. Dan how do you feel it compares to your older 15" setup in home theater? I understand the 13 is a faster sub and the 15 has has less but it seems amazing that it does as well on the lower end, granted it is ported

Any chance of another reference series in a slightly smaller size, maybe in the 13 - 15 “ width? Hopefully, something in the 18 - 20 hz, +/- 3 dB range with performance and sound similar to Rythmik, PSA, REL, etc. Maybe a Reference 10/11 or Super Flex 10-12” with several adjustment features.

This looks like a really nice sub, but I'm a little surprised at the price. For $30 more I can get a great 18" sub from a well respected internet direct company. I won't name or link to that company, since this is Emotiva's forum, but the company I'm talking about makes very musical, sealed, servo subs. I'm not trying to be difficult, I'm just confused by the high price.

The frequency response curve on this sub is FLAT. The 18" sub that you're talking about, bluescale may be great for home theater (big boom impacts for explosions), but for music, I'd put money (a lot) on the Emotiva unit. Pitch definition is what is needed for music, and any sub with a radically peaked response (as most home theater subs have) won't do pitch as well as a sub that has flat response. Your definition of "very musical" is questionable until the sub's frequency response is verified. Note that the Emotiva sub is virtually flat from 20 to 200 Hz. (MORE than three octaves!). Not many subs can do that. Really. THAT's why the Emotiva sub costs what it does. It takes some serious amplification (and engineering) to make a subwoofer that measures flat for even an octave, much less more than three. And yes, that difference IS audible.
