I'm thinking the same thing....
Many people caught, and died from, the Flu before we developed the vaccine... Yet I don't recall entire countries being placed in quarantine... Or drug stores selling out of rubbing alcohol... When the recent yearly seasonal pandemic of the Flu started occurring...
I suspect that the reasons are twofold... - first off too many of us have grown accustomed to expecting to be absolutely protected from virtually everything - the media that benefit from whipping everyone into a frenzy have become both more pervasive and more enthusiastic
I would point out that, even with the most pessimistic estimates, there are at least a dozen things that are more likely to result in my death over the next year than the coronavirus. Yet, amazingly, they aren't in the headlines very often, and I don't lose sleep over most of them.
J usually find I agree with KeithL's post over 90% of the time. Unfortunately, I very strongly disagree with his post here and the posts of many others here who feel we are over-hyping this Covid 19. Since my wife (who just left for Japan Tuesday) and I are high risk, senior citizens due to advanced lung issues (there are many millions of us in the US), I have studied extensively over the past few weeks about this virus. This Covid19 virus is from 10 to 20 times more infectious than the usual influenza. I had the chills last night, some body aches but a normal temperature this morning. I just took my temp and it is 100.7 degrees (100.4 is the warning level). I'm going to shower and shave now and call my PC physician to get her advice. Not sure how this will end but I'll not be back here for maybe a long time. In the meantime, please cut out your well-meaning but incorrect conclusions. No responses please! THIS IS DAMN SERIOUS
Update: Looks like I got about 3-4 false readings. Up to 100.8 and then down to 98. Going now to get a new thermometer. Will be back later with an explanation. I truly am a NUT! Update/Change #2. There are no oral thermometers left on the planet. However, did get a new battery from watch repair guy. Now back from 98.0 up to 100.7. I think I do have the virus, probably Noriko also. I see my doctor in the morning to take the test.

All public schools in the state of Maryland are now closed from March 16th through the 27th. Our cruise terminal has also been closed with two ships still out. Those two ships will be allowed to return to port, but all passengers must be tested before re-entry.
Stay safe and be smart my friends...

I’m thinking Virginia is right behind in terms of school closure.

My wife sent me out to Walmart after dinner for TP and kleenex because she heard that people have been buying it up. My local Walmart is usually quite slow at that time of night. It was packed with panic buyers. ZERO paper products of any kind. Bread aisle was almost wiped out. CRAZY. Good thing we have two large bulk packages in the basement.

Ditto for Costco today. Even toilet paper was sold out (guess it makes sense if you're anticipating diarrhea and vomiting...). Since this disease primarily affects the elderly, it would be more logical to hypothesize that the very young started the disease to get rid of the older generation than to accuse China of causing it - but hysteria knows no logic.
Fortunately, the thing isn't loose here yet (so far as we know), and things are still fairly normal (other than hoarding & other such foolishness). I hope it stays that way.
The most probable vaccine source will most likely come from someone who has the virus, but is asymptomatic and is unable to transmit to others. Sequence THAT gene!

Best story I heard today: Someone I know placed an order with BJ's, and included toilet paper in their order. As is usual, the order listed potential substitutions for items that might not be in stock, and she had to okay the substitutions.
The substitution listed for the toilet paper was . . . copy paper. Ouch, thank goodness it wasn't sandpaper.

I was at a Lowes yesterday buying a new air filter for the hvac. They had a big pile of paper towels so I bought one plus a bottle of bleach spray. While in line to check out the lady behing me states that the grocert store was out of tp so she had to come there to buy some. I finished paying for my items, put them into the car and went back in and got a package of tp. We'll use it eventually. I'm hearing that I would be sh!t out of luck today.
My wife had also ramped up our grocery buying a week ago. We are easily stocked for about a month with fresh food.
Good Luck everyone. I don't think this is the flu of 1918, but it is serious. Three of us in the house have asthma. I've had a nasty cold since Sunday which will not let go. No fever or shortness of breath, but I certainly don't want this Covid-19 on top of what I have.

Schools in Fairfax County, Virginia are closed today. Not sure for how long. My wife is going to Costco this morning to shop for regular groceries and will check to see if they have any TP. We are down to eight rolls. May have to clean off with the backyard hose.
Thinking about putting in a Bidet!
Crazy times folks. At least we will be putting our AV systems to good use!

Similarly, found a total wipe-out of toilet paper at WalMart yesterday, but the Ingles 1/2 mile away was fully stocked and on a roll with sale prices. Won't be long (or already) until people start stealing the rolls from the restrooms. Don't be bummed out, exercise preparationH.

By "preparation" - do you mean "don't enter a public rest room without bringing your own toilet paper"?
I would also note that a significant part of the "sellout problem" is that our supplies of many common low cost items now come from China.
So the "problem" is both increased demand and a reduced, and often delayed, supply chain.
I would also suggest that "panic is self limiting".....
People can only panic for so long..... And, once everyone has filled their pantry, the stores will restock.....

My in laws live in Oakton and said the shoppers are making a run on most of the grocery stores. Hopefully the panic will end in the upcoming weeks.
We keep a months supply of food in the garage freezer for these events. With a family of 6, you have to.
As usual, it's not the emergency that is the problem, it's how people respond to it.

Agreed; I'm in the food business (marketing/distribution to retail grocery) and for now the supply chain continues uninterrupted. Nice to hear that not one of our distributors in the country have reported that shipments will be held up. Scott

My company (in York, Pa) has just released our plan for the next 2 weeks. We are a distributor for industrial products that support local industry.
Skeleton Crew at the office. Others working from home. No visitors. Outside sales to work from home unless customer emergencies require a visit. All scheduled meeting cancelled.

A comedian already commented that the biggest threat to come out of all this might be "people having to spend weeks home with their kids if the schools close".
